Parents need to go to jail IMO.

I don't know, a lot of the time now, it seems like the new "norm" is parents or single mother working two jobs just to pay rent. It takes a village. Did anyone else notice problems?

Thank goodness for the young men who tackled the shooter in the English class. Sounds like four of them stepped up and saved lives in that classroom.

If the kids were driving around in that car for even a day I tend to agree w/you. If they painted it on the way out the door I’ll reserve judgment.

There were two shooters at Columbine but in general school shooters are typically lone wolves. In all likelihood one was the instigator and the other a follower. Not sure who was who but I may wind up feeling some sympathy for the follower’s parents. If the instigator was Eddie Haskall (including his social media presence) they may have had little warning.

The Columbine shooters were building bombs in the house, blowing stuff up in fields and presented lots of other warning signs. Not sure if that’s the case here. One of the shooters had been in therapy — who knows. Maybe the parents tried to get tbe child help and tbe therapist reassured them their kid was just garden-variety depressed and going through a phase.

IMO if they’re normal both sets of parents already feel absolutely miserable, replaying everything they’ve done and didn’t do to figure out what they could/should have done differently. If they aren’t I agree — they should go to jail.

MOO

From the article you have linked, it sounds as if the transgender suspect had been bullied .....

"A combination of factors, including revenge and anger, spurred the attack, the Denver TV ABC affiliate reported, citing law enforcement sources. One of the suspects had reportedly been bullied over gender identity."

Seems like shooters have always are bullied in some way. Let's put the bullies's parents in jail too. IMO, this won't stop until the parents are made accountable.

Oh my gosh and his robotics team shirt... so incredibly sad. Condolences to Kendrick's family, friends, FRC team 4418, and all who knew him... :( :(

And Kendrick was only 3 days away from graduating, according to the link that Gardenista posted. :(

Agree regarding the bullies parents. Too many of them are bullies themselves, and we’ve seen them relentlessly pummel complete strangers online protected by internet anonymity. IMO THEY are the root of the problem.

One of the two shooters accused of opening fire inside a Denver-area school, killing one student and wounding nine others, will make his first appearance in court Wednesday.

Initial charges against Devon Erickson, 18, will be announced at 1:30 p.m. local time, officials said at a morning press conference.

The second suspect — a female who is a minor — will not be in court Wednesday, said George Brauchler, the district attorney for Colorado’s 18th District, which covers Douglas County.

Brauchler said he hasn’t yet determined whether the underage suspect will be charged as an adult.

Two handguns were used in the shooting, which left senior Kendrick Castillo, 18, dead.

So the "why" appears to be centered on bullying, at least toward the 17 yr old. The 18 yr old?

I don't believe the parents will be held responsible for the 18 yr old, since he is an adult. Does he understand the implications of killing someone, wounding 8 others? He's about to confront reality. Facing jail instead of post high school will be a real wake-up call. Hope he enjoys taking college courses inside the walls.

To be honest, at that start of most of these stories, "bullying" is referenced, and then we often find out that isn't really entirely accurate. Not that bullying isn't a problem. It is, and schools really do very little about it. In fact, in my opinion, the schools' anit-bullying programs not only don't help, but arguably make the situation worse.

Does he understand what it is like in prison?
It is not going to be easy for a very young, slim, nice looking guy in there.

So true. He is not in for a promising future.

It’s an easy excuse. But truth is most of us were probably bullied at some point yet somehow muddled our way to productive adulthood. And few if any of us found it necessary to gun down a roomful of peers in the process.

I think bullying is horrible and leaves long-term emotional scars but IMO no way does it mitigate let alone justify killing someone. These kids are old enough to be fully accountable for their crimes . I have zero pity for either of them.

Just curious, why do you think they may make it worse?
