BBM. I agree with your comments. Great post!

I hope this response does not get deleted because I think it's key to understanding incidents like these.

I believe that the people who decide engage in shootings and other acts of violence in this way - actually do - think that they are engaging in an act of "self defense. "That is, they may not feel that they are defending them self but they do feel that they are defending others.

His words were "No more body parts." That speaks directly to his intent to defend against that practice.

Rationally thinking / "normal" people tend to keep those impulses and inclinations in check. While, obviously some people can't.

He killed three people and he wouldn't have had to defend himself if he hadn't shown up with a weapon and started firing at innocent civilians and law enforcement officers.

Whatever they say their motive is I don't think any mass shooters are into it to defend or protect anyone. It's all about them.

Personally, I'm sad they took this horrible man alive. I wish he had been killed in the shootout with police.

I feel otherwise. I am sooooo glad he was taken alive. Not only does he have a lot of questone to answer, he needs to be held accountable. Killing a cop and shooting at cops, killing people, he is not going to be getting any royal treatment, quite the opposite. He ain't going to be getting any favors, if anything, daily beatings maybe (I didn't say that). Jmo

I believe he was shooting at propane tanks left in the parking lot. I haven’t heard about any other explosives.

Just in case anyone wants to see what happens when you shoot a BBQ sized propane tank, have a look:

Yes, Margarita25, IMO, he has killed before, and on more than one occasion.. Dear has all the prerequisites of a serial killer/mass murderer and has likely been escalating for decades. Notoriety was/is likely his ultimate goal in the Planned Parenthood standoff, imo.
I find it very curious that approximately half of Dear's targeted gunshot victims were Law Enforcement Officers.

Serial killers are not the same as mass shooters. Please don’t put them in the same category. <modsnip> I doubt he is even looking for notoriety. He is just filled with rage for the government. He is more like Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols then a serial killer.

I didn'the say that he was defending HIMSELF. I think (by his comment) that he thought that he was acting in defense of others.

Okay, I think that even the investigators will disagree with you on that.

Respectfully, I think Foxfire knows the different classifications, we've only been discussing "spree shootings" vs "rampage shootings" vs "serial killers", etc etc for months, complete with FBI links and classifications. He answered my question which was "is it likely that this recent rampage shooting is a crime of escalation, as seen in other types of crimes". He also prefaced his opinion with words like "prerequisites" and "likely". I appreciate any insight Foxfire has to offer, I think he has studied enough serial killers, AND actively participated in NoCo and here to be able to offer a valuable opinion, imo. In addition, we do not know that any of the other shootings around here are not politically motivated as well.

As explosive as a propane tank is (or can be) -it's not the worst thing that someone could bring to a scene like this. I couldn't believe my eyes the other day when one of the news channels showed how one of the ISIS bombs were made with common household chemicals.

He hid food in the woods (afraid neighbor would take? Put it another way he obviously thinks someone is "stealing" his food

[sbm]

he tended to offer unsolicited advice such as recommending that Hood put a metal roof on his house so the U.S. government couldn’t spy on him. He obviously beleived the govt was spying on him through his roof - again delusionial and paranoid!

A gunman who police say staged a deadly attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic was a recluse who stashed food in the woods, avoided eye contact, warned neighbors about government spying and passed out anti-Obama pamphlets, those who knew him said.

They said he had no political or religious leanings but it sounds like he's anti-government and anti-Obama. And his behavior suggests anti-authority, misogyny, and anti-choice. To me those all count as political leanings. Maybe he's just one of those prepper conspiracy theorist types? Based on personalities I've listened to and articles I've read on the internet being an off-the-grid loner is living the dream. Though I understand that could be a result of a mental illness.

Hiding food in the woods - maybe he was stocking up and didn't have room, or had no refrigeration? I'm just trying to think of all the possibilities. :)

And JMO of course.

I think that was because Planned Parenthood had a crisis plan and it was so effective law enforcement officers were all he had left.

I assumed he shot the police officers who provide security for the Planned Parenthood, in order to gain access to the building? Those buildings aren't easy to get into, due to how often they are threatened and attacked, and they do, in my experience, have a number of LEOs on-site for just this type of incident.

This NPR article compiles a few snippets from other publications:

What We Know About The Alleged Planned Parenthood Shooter

Its good. Kind of like a Reader's Digest article for people who don't like to be bothered actually reading whole articles.

Thanks for posting:

"A search of public records finds that Dear had several run-ins with the law. The records show nine criminal filings under his name: Two "personal intrusion" — or peeping Tom or eavesdropping — charges that were later dropped and he was acquitted of two animal cruelty charges."

Peeping Tom, animal cruelty, sounds like potential traits of a serial killer to me. Wouldn't rule it out at this point, that's for sure JMO.

Also from the above link:

"He was an independent art dealer with a degree in public administration from a Midwestern college, she said, who struck deals with artists, mostly Southern ones, who painted Charleston, S.C., street scenes, Old South plantation tableaus, magnolias and pictures of the Citadel campus. He tended to buy the rights to paintings, commission 1,000 or so prints, then market and sell the prints and keep the proceeds.

"He was born in Charleston and grew up in Louisville, Ky., but he had strong ties to South Carolina. His father was a graduate of the Citadel, Charleston's famous public military college. Robert Lewis Dear Sr., the father, died in 2004. He was a Navy veteran who served in World War II and worked 40 years for the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. ..."

*father was a military vet. Interesting...
