CO - 3 killed in shootout near/at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, 27 Nov 2015 *Arrest*

I agree. Rampage killings, mass murders, (terrorism, too), etc. are a "new normal" for all civilized people now.

So, IMO, all we can do is exercise personal responsibility, vigilance, and preparedness for such events. It's not possible, IMO, to prevent these occurrences, and I believe they will continue to increase. It's up to each of us to decide if we give in to fear and anxiety, and crawl into a hole, and withdraw from society, or continue to live our lives fully immersed, with increased vigilance and preparedness. (Or plunge ahead oblivious to any and all dangers, as some do!)

I have no idea what the "right" answer is for most people. I just know what works for me, and my family. Or, at least what makes us (my family) all feel more in control, and less anxious.

I personally won't give in to fear.
We have one life and I am going to live mine.
If I lived in fear, then I wouldn't be living a true life for myself.
It is horrific that in October and now there were these murders of innocent people.
But I am not going to crawl in a hole.
I have to live my life, free, and enjoyable.
Otherwise what kind of existence would I have?
I won't succumb to terror.
IMOO.

Treelights,

I just wanted to say I know what it feels like to have things like this happen in your community, on many levels. Remember your wonderful posts about Long Live Co Springs and all that good stuff in NoCo after the first rampage shooting? This sucks so bad, and my heart goes out to all you guys...it's sickening, and enraging. As far as Dear goes, you guys have your killers down there, one's dead, one's in custody. We don't. There are a lot of people who want answers around here as to who killed John Jacoby, who killed William "Bill" Connolly (as a local WS member knows him as), who shot Cori Romero in the neck while she was driving down I 25, etc etc...what I'm sayin hon is that we have to look at this guy, not only for NoCo imo, but other things! I mean, animal cruelty, domestic violence, peeping tom, sadomasichism, mass shooting, Cheese n Rice! Just because we talk about the killer, it does not mean we do not care about the victims. Total opposite, we care so much. You know that...I can see my house in these Noco maps, I drive these roads every day, so do people I care about, you better believe I'm going to be on this guy like stink on s h$t.

Hugs.

Thank you for the Hugs and your post! :)

Hi All,

Please remember to stay on topic. If we start in on gun control this thread will go south faster than the snowbirds heading to Florida for the winter.

There's really only one reason people commit crimes like this. They think they're smarter than we are, morally superior perhaps. The excuses change: abortion, religion, bigotry. But the reason is their sense of exceptionalism. The biggest question is why do some act out violently?

Yes, this is true.
We have a lot of Iraq War Vets here in Colorado Springs, due to several military installations in our area, with
Active Duty status, and vets that have been discharged, as well.

IMOO.

Interesting. :)

Ain that the truth!

Thank you so much Tricia for providing this platform for discussion. Thanks for all that you do. Words can not express. And thank you to the mods as well.

Great question. That's what I want to know. I can not fathom why someone would want to go into a school, or wherever, the streets, mow people down....thinking about this, maybe deep internal pain? Minimal coping skills obviously..

Okay, this is interesting...

Instead, massacre killers are typically marked by what are considered personality disorders: grandiosity, resentment, self-righteousness, a sense of entitlement. They become, says Dr. Knoll, " 'collectors of injustice' who nurture their wounded narcissism." To preserve their egos, they exaggerate past humiliations and externalize their anger, blaming others for their frustrations. They develop violent fantasies of heroic revenge against an uncaring world.

Which is what I think you were saying, right?

But Dear is remarkably different from the typical shooters:

perpetrators often model themselves after commandos, wearing military dress or black clothing. Investigators usually find they had a lifelong fascination with weaponry, warfare, and military and survivalist culture. Their methodical comportment during the act is part of this styling.

at rampage shooters usually plan their actions meticulously, even ritualistically, for months in advance. Like serial killers, massacre killers usually don't have impulsive personalities; they tend to be obsessive and highly organized. Survivors typically report that the shooters appear to be not enraged but cold and calculating.

and they don't typically have the "debilitating delusions and insidious psychotic fantasies of the paranoid schizophrenic." Dr. Knoll affirms that "the literature does not reflect a strong link with serious mental illness."

I agree with you - their excuses change and it's all about the act or their personal issues (though some don't even have that) but what happened here?

Interesting. :)

Well....
Since you mentioned "Interesting"...

Just thought you might like to know in case you don't, and not that this would
mean Anything at all...

http://gazette.com/new-colorado-springs-va-clinic-celebrates-official-opening/article/1538325

It's the new Veteran's Clinic, right there at Fillmore and Centennial. A little Southeast of King Soopers...

AND if this is totally off topic, please delete mods. Thank You!

I think maybe some people were even taken here, if I am not mistaken.
I will see if I can find a reference to that.

ETA:

"A number of people were evacuated during the standoff — some wrapped in blankets in the blowing snow — to a nearby Veterans Administration clinic."

The article I linked to has a LOT of information, including the reasoning (if you can call it that) behind rampage and mass shootings and a list of what we shouldn't do. Which is basically everything we do.

It's long and if I were to copy and paste all the interesting, relevant parts I would end up copying and pasting the entire thing.

He was firing at vehicles...did he hit any vehicles? I just remembered something...I posted for reference what a windshield looks like after being hit by an AK47...it was a cop car...we were examining for purposes re: the unsolved mysterious shatterings...

Good Article! Thanks!
It reminded me of what Peter Klismet said about the OCTOBER Colorado Springs shooter:

"Retired FBI Profiler gives his take on Colorado Springs shooter."

http://www.koaa.com/story/30429517/retired-fbi-profiler-gives-his-take-on-recent-shooter

This article is too short to copy, but it mentions about anger and he doesn't buy that Harpham just snapped.

I am interested in what Peter Klismet has to say about Robert Dear.

IMOO.
