9/11/24 Update: Craig was back in court this week for his latest legal development, not for the murder charge, but for alleged perjury & allegations of a scheme to try & cover up the alleged murder. During the hearing, prosecutors detailed a letter discovered in April 2023 – just weeks after his arrest – in the mailroom of Arapahoe County Detention Facility. A mailroom employee contacted police detective Bobbi Olson after opening a letter that had been returned to its sender, Craig, at the facility. Addressed to “William & Becca,” the letter had been sent to the mailing address of a man who had briefly been incarcerated in the same wing of the detention center as Craig, Olson testified on Wednesday. Craig’s defense counsel pointed out that the inmate never agreed to any scheme & also that he’d offered details of his “10-second” jailhouse conversation with Craig, as the inmate was a fugitive on another warrant. The detective told the court handwriting samples had been sent to the lab but investigators were still awaiting results. Judge Shay Whitaker found on Wednesday that prosecutors had met the burden of proof & set an arraignment date on the amended perjury charge for 10/15/24 @ 1:30pm, pretrial readiness conference hearing on 11/15/24 @ 8:30am, Jury selection on 11/21/24 @ 8:30am & jury selection on 11/25/24 @ 8:30am. Craig’s murder trial is scheduled to begin on 12/2/24 thru 12/19/24. See article in post #529, page 27 for more info.
10/15/24 Update: Tuesday, Craig listened as his attorney asked 18th Judicial District Judge Shay Whitaker to throw out a fourth perjury count. Court transcripts revealed that Craig attempted to persuade a fellow inmate into agreeing to a bizarre plan to coerce women to give false testimony. In exchange, Craig would give his would-be accomplice's mother free dental work & pay the man & at least two women $5,000. Judge Whitaker denied defense attorney Harvey Steinberg's request to sever the perjury count, noting that two other charges of tampering with evidence were "similar in nature & are part of a common theme or plan." She was referring to two other times Craig allegedly tried to tamper with evidence from jail. Next pretrial readiness hearing on 11/15/24 @ 8:30am.
