Search efforts have concluded for a missing Loveland man who was last seen entering a dumpster.
On January 17, 2026, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office received a report about a missing adult, 57-year-old Carl Smith. Through the initial investigation, deputies determined his last known location and obtained security video from the area, which was located in Loveland/unincorporated Larimer County. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Smith had entered a dumpster and did not exit. A short time later, a garbage truck arrived, emptied the dumpster contents, and deposited the load at the Larimer County landfill.
Based on this information, LCSO spent four full days searching the landfill with the assistance of LCSO investigators, forensics team, Emergency Services Phantom Canyon crew, Larimer County Search & Rescue (LCSAR), Larimer County Coroner's Office, and Solid Waste staff. The extensive efforts included using hand tools, heavy equipment, cadaver dogs, and drones to search the section where the truck had deposited its contents. The search area included an estimated 10,000 cubic yards of solid waste. Mr. Smith was not located.
“While many questions remain unanswered, our team went to considerable efforts in hopes of locating Mr. Smith,” said Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen. “We couldn’t have gone to such lengths without the hard manual labor of our crew and help of our partners at Larimer County Solid Waste and LCSAR. All human life holds value, and these folks demonstrated that through their unwavering dedication to this tough operation.”
Investigators have not yet determined the man's reason for entering the dumpster; however, foul play is not suspected, and there is no risk to community safety.
