Why go out in the freezing cold, carrying a heavy backpack and a fishing pole, without even a working cell, to hitch a 19 mile ride , when your dad is only an hour from returning?

It was NOT freezing cold. Those of "us" that live in the mountains (as DR did for most of his life) ... it was rather to warm

Then why was everyone making a big deal out of him only having a hoodie? :waitasec:

But what I am saying is that MR's cell phone worked for texting at his home. That has been established.

And he had a landline. So D could have used the landline and if he had no cell service, he could have looked up the numbers then called on the home phone.

But ER said that she received texts from DR while he was at his dad's before, so there is some service apparently. He probably bought one of those hotspot routers that are available.

You/nor I know that MR cell phone worked for texting at his home. IF you know this, please post the link. TIA

ER has no idea where DR was located when she received texts from DR, in the past, since she wasn't there. ... IMO

DR friend R*** was at his grannys. I do not know if that granny was maternal/paternal granny. I do not know if DR had that programmed cell # into his cell? Do you?

I had no clue that anyone was making a big deal out of this. It was chilly to cold at night, but the day time temp was really nice. IMO.

There's more ... just look!!

All the news articles state that MR had gone to Durango to meet with his divorce lawyer. I'm assuming if Cameron Secrist of Cortez was still his divorce attorney, that Mr Secrist probably went to Durango and they had a prearranged meeting spot.

http://www.durangoherald.com/articl...6/0/dwais/Investigators-end-search-of-house--

He told The Durango Herald on Wednesday he had gone to Durango to meet with his divorce lawyer.

and

Mark Redwine said he had to go to Durango that morning to run errands
and to speak to his divorce lawyer.

So let's say it was toasty warm. Even then, he didn't have a working cell phone, so he hadn't talked to his friend, who was waiting at his grandmothers house. Dylan was a few hours late already. Why chance taking a lot longer and trying to hitch a ride, when he KNEW his dad was only an hour or so from returning?

If he waited for Dad, he could get his cell fixed/replaced, and he could also get a ride to the front door of wherever his friend had gone. [ he had tired of waiting at Grandma's by 10 am.]

But if he tried to hitch, he had no cell and would not know where his friend was waiting for him. And he would not get a ride to the door but would be dropped off somewhere out of his control. It would probably take much longer to get there than if he just waited for his certain ride.

I have no clue if he has a landline or not. FB (rumors) say so and ER (who hasn't been to MR house at Vallecito in ages said that), but how does she know? A report (MSM) said the phone rang and rang:

The telephone at his residence at 2343 County Road 500 rang until it cut off.

I have no idea what MR knew about DR phone or phone service/provider.

Phone service sucks at Vallecito Reservoir. IMO. ALL phone service. Nearest tower is miles, miles away.

according to the Blue Spruce RV Park theres a local tower

Stay connected if you so choose (Local Cell Tower, Satellite TV, and free WiFi available).

thats at 1875 County Road 500, Bayfield, Colorado 81122

also from thread #15

According to this site there is an AT&T Tower about 2 miles (as the crow flies) from MR's home. No other carriers have a tower in this area. I would imagine all carriers are routing through this tower in the area?

http://www.antennasearch.com/sitesta...st=pagehandler

Here are the specifics on the tower...

Filing #: 2012-ANM-2671-OE
Latitude: 37.444
Longitude: -107.538
Structure Type: Tall Structure
Status: Unknown
Date Filed: 11/01/2012
Ground Elev: 8196.3 feet
Height Of Structure: 151.9 feet
Overall Height: 8348.5 feet
Structure Address: Not Recorded

So at under 200ft, it is an unregistered tower but with the elevation a 152ft tower should be adequate for the area.

I can't see there being no reception in the area, especially on a Monday morning when a lot of people are at work and the tower is not likely being overused.

Even though MR said Dylan understood he was leaving and would not be back until 11:30ish, perhaps Dylan really didn't understand in his tired, sleeping state. So, when he woke up, he only realizes his dad's gone and doesn't really remember him stating he'd be back to take him to his friend's house. JMO

ER has already said MR was reliable (paraphrasing here). WHY would DR think MR would return on time?

I live in a suburb of D/FW. It's a large, 2 college city. My husband and I both have Sprint. His cell phone works in our house, but I have to go outside to make/take a call. It's weird.

Thanks so much for the link. This is the very first time I have seen it posted!
Unfortunately the docs won't work on my android tablet and the hard drive is frozen on my laptop so guess I'm about to boot up my ancient desktop with fingers crossed that it will open the docs.

MR said that after gently nudging his son awake, and promising to return, Dylan said he understood. So it sounds like he made a sincere promise to return by 11.

Why wouldn't D think his dad was going to return?

Why wouldn't D think his dad was going to return?

Beats me. ER SAID they had no relationship. Hadn't seen him in years (paraphrasing). Out of town all the time, etc. Not close. Didn't want to be there, etc.

  • #598
I have tried to accept a scenario like that, but I have a hard time for a few reasons. Dad said he 'gently nudged D awake and promised he would be back around 11 to pick him up.

As you said, tired teens on vacation tend to sleep in. So if D slept until 9 or 10, then had cereal and watched a little tv, he would have only an hour or two until his ride came home.

Why go out in the freezing cold, carrying a heavy backpack and a fishing pole, without even a working cell, to hitch a 19 mile ride , when your dad is only an hour from returning?

And what was he going to do about his broken phone, without contacting dad or mom about buying him a replacement?

And why didn't he contact his friends, who had been waiting for hours already, to see if they could get him a ride? Or at least to tell them he missed his earlier ride?

It is not that I don't believe that Dylan MIGHT try and hitch a ride. It is just that I don't think he would do so when he had no working cell, had not contacted his friend yet, and knew he had a ride coming in an hour or so.

And if he waited for his dad he could get a new battery for his cell first and get a ride right to the doorstep of his friends house. Hitchhiking is not as exact and takes much longer. jmo :moo:

Sorry I thought I had explained a few of those questions you raised. I know other posters have too, so I'm at a loss as to why these scenarios are deemed so unbelievable or far fetched.

He arrived in the evening wearing shorts and t-shirt, so I figured that Dylan was't concerned with the cold at that time - which was possibly even warmer at mid morning Monday than it had been the night before.

We don't know that his backpack was heavy - boys travel light in my experience. In the airport photo it didn't appear to be stuffed to capacity to me - it kind of looks low and saggy behind his hips rather than being full and visible behind his shoulders or upper body area.

He was more than likely annoyed with his dad, for reasons we've all guessed. I have always taken his friends' assertions and ER's own words of caution as a pretty good indicator that Dylan was confident/independent enough to head off on his own and hitchhike if necessary. So yes, I think Dylan may have thought "Bugger this - I'm outta here!" to show he could get where he wanted himself.

Dylan had been promised a smart phone for Xmas IIRC - surely even the most demanding teen would not seriously expect to be bought a new one a month before Xmas? Mine wouldn't even dare ask me - they know that kind of purchase is reserved for birthday/xmas gifts.

All MOO of course, and pretty reasonable sounding IMO too :)

Not freezing cold. Not by any stretch from someone who lives at 7,900' of altitude in NM. So nice. Best T'day in years.

Yes that does happen, I said earlier about how sometimes it comes down to the phone rather than the tower
