I tend to think the phone was already dead or MR would have heard the first one that morning. MOO

If it was a text, there may not be much to hear; phones don't ring, they make a beep of some sort. Or Dylan may have set his phone to 'buzz' and there wouldn't have been anything to hear unless you can pick up on the 'buzz' sound like I can.

Ok well being that Dylan lives in Colorado I am gonna guess he doesn't wear summer athletic shorts n tees year round. Why should it be a battle what you go to bed in? Boys can and do sleep in their tighty whities or boxers... I know all my brothers did. And my son. It simply is a non -issue.....no battles necessary.

Actually considering what he went missing in, I don't think athletic shorts and t-shirt is a reach.

Ok just poured myself a very cold glass of Pinot. Head hot and achy. I know I am being *****y and nit-picky. Going to sip and be quiet.......serenity now!

I'm having wine myself. Please don't be quiet. We need all the eyes we can get. Serenity.

To me, when they said no activity on the phone after approximately 8 p.m. that Sunday, that was worrisome. The phone being turned off or on could have been done by anyone, so it really doesn't provide any definitive evidence that I can see.

Whether his phone was turned off, powered down, smashed again the road, or left on but unused by Dylan, can be debated forever. The problem is, as far as we know, after that key time point, no one has heard from Dylan: not by that cell phone, his father's cell phone, landline, computer, iPod, note, letter....

I haven't seen or don't remember that the police have said Dylan didn't use the landline, computer, ipod, note or letter after 8pm Sunday. Could someone refresh my memory please? Or was it someone other than police maybe? I'm just not remembering. Thank you.

Actually, the two did communicate (I believe ER texted DR, and DR responded) that he had landed and been picked up by his dad.

She texted him and he responded. Cheese said Dylan didn't initiate the text that he was there. IMO

Well, we may never know. My gut feeling is that Dylan, and his phone, ceased on Sunday night, as awful as my phrasing is.

I have been glued to another thread. Local case. I have popped in but not up to speed last couple of days. Is there anything new? TIA. I still will follow here but right now need to follow what is way to close :what:

Wait, if they are texting the whole night, then they never went to sleep, how could they be texting when they wake up if they never went to sleep? :waitasec:

On a more serious note: I've mentioned before, I have a 13 year old niece who is tech saavy enough to have installed a dozen apps on the Kindle she got for Christmas by next morning, and I never saw her text once over the holidays. I also saw my very tech saavy 18 year old nephew on Christmas Eve and he didn't text at all, too busy playing with his iPad. All kids are different.

I agree that all kids and all people for that matter are different. They react differently to situations they are in and they act differently in their daily lives.

Trying to say that all 13 year old's would do this behavior or would react only a certain way when placed into a particular environment is not logical to me.

Yes, I know. Dylan didn't bother calling or texting his mom to let her know he had gotten in safely and his dad had picked him up. She had to wait until she texted him first before he let her know what he was doing.

Please allow me to say I don't believe a person is a bad parent to allow it. It makes my skin crawl too. I just am having difficulty with changing a lifelong habit to that. It simply wouldn't have occurred to them. How in gods name can you sleep in binding street clothes? Even my huge son sleeps in his boxers. As PaulR said it takes no more than a minit or two to shinny into your daywear.

I don't believe that Elaine was ever planning on having Dylan make a life long habit of it. But kids wear comfy clothes, like elastic waist bands and nylon shorts and big t-shirts to middle school. No reason that Dylan would have worn uncomfortable clothes to bed.

And in my son's case, he was often just a minute or two late for the bus. So that tiny time saved was crucial. He didn't do it for more than a month or two, but it worked at the time.

And I got the impression that you were saying that any parent who'd allow it was a bad parent. It is hard to know what people are trying to say on here sometimes though.

Boys and girls are so different. Sounds like a lot of boys wear street clothes to bed, but in Walmart you can see girls wearing pajama pants all the time. :waitasec:

There was one year where my son had to leave before 7 am to catch the school bus. Whatever he had to do that year to get, he did!

Only a year?!! You are lucky! We live about two miles from the middle school my dd attends (she rides the bus) and she has to be out right before 7 every morning.

Next year (if she makes it into the performing arts school she's applied to) she'll have to leave REALLY early!

what's most troubling to me is that Dylan did not respond to R's first two texts Monday morning...

R: (Tme: 6:46 a.m. Nov. 19) Where are you

R: (Time: 10 a.m. Nov. 19) Come to nandos.

(I know...it's a rehash of stuff that's been posted over & over again...)

that's all we've got.

Just another side note/observation to add here - R only sent the one text 16 mins after D was due to arrive. If he had been too concerned or annoyed, IMO there would have been more follow up messages. The lack of concern could mean that in that 13yo world, changes in plans or being less than reliable about punctuality wasn't so unusual.

Also in the second message R tells D to come to another friend's place. Not only was R not sounding overly concerned at that point, but it seems to me that he was also out and about getting on with his own socialising by 10am. Nothing wrong with that, but again his texts or lack of don't give the impression that anything wildly out of the ordinary was going on.

IMO way too much emphasis has been placed on how others think Dylan would or should have responded. I have a 13yo who isn't remotely interested in even keeping his phone charged for weeks on end, others have teens who are unable to peel themselves from their phones. The reality is that we don't know Dylan's actual texting habits, or how his old phone was behaving that night.

I still think his phone may have just stopped working of it's own accord that evening, and that this wasn't even noticed until it was found still dead on the charger the next morning.

I don't discard the phone issue. I do recall ER saying he would text until his phone literally smoked. Doesn't sound like a stable phone to me. Could easily "cark it" at any time.
