I am all for PI's but can't help wondering what they could really do in this case, assuming Dylan was really abducted by a stranger. There does not seem to be any witnesses to try to interview, for example and if LE does have any info or clues, i can't see them sharing much with a PI.

And imo, many times, PI's set out to prove things according to who hired them. If MR's family hired a PI, and ER's family hired a PI, they would set out in different ways and probably come to different conclusions. JMO

I think the danger here - and maybe this is why the reward money is for solving the case not finding the body - is that people may put themselves at risk by going out into the woods and searching for a body just for the reward money. The last thing we need is another missing person

Also you don't see too many missing persons posters with a reward stating "dead or alive." They are usually for "safe return" and/or "the arrest and conviction."

Various monies have been offered up in Holly Bobo's case totaling a quarter of a million or more, and yet nothing has helped to locate her or bring about an arrest. I often think that reward money is collected in lieu of anything else to do, i.e. kind of in desperation. Not much precedent for it being a fruitful tool in finding missing people.

At the very least PI's would keep an investigation going and keep the story moving, whereas it would otherwise fade into LE cold case.
The mindset, boundaries, and resources are different and even if they don't find the missing person they may well maintain an investigation that provides something to pass onto LE that will eventually solve the case.

I don't think the time shown as "last seen" has anything to do with what LE may or may not believe, just that it is the reported time they have to work with. Until or unless they charge MR, i don't think LE will make any public indication one way or another as to their belief about Dylan ever being in the house, and so on.

There is no doubt in my mind that Elaine loves Dylan more than any negative feelings she has about Mark. She wants her little boy and has made numerous statements regarding her love for Dylan. I'm sure if she hired a PI it would be for the primary purpose of finding Dylan.

I agree, i just don't see how a PI can do much, other than physically search, as there seems to be no trace at all.

Can I just say that I am so impressed with the systems the US has put in place to assist with locating missing persons?

The reasons for developing the systems are sad, but the systems are actually quite impressive.

My nephew's 3rd baby was just born a couple weeks ago, and one of the first things that went through my head when I heard was that I hope they never have any reason to be aware that systems like that even exist. It's good that we have them, but it sucks that we need them. MOO

I agree about reward money not being a big factor in solving many of these cases. For example, in spite of a large reward, we still don't know who killed Morgan Harrington -- and all of us could cite numerous examples I'm sure.

Which begs the question -- if money is not an incentive in solving a case, what does this mean? Either the perpetrator acted alone perhaps, and/or no one saw anything.

In the case of Laci Peterson, the reward went up to $100K I think -- and it appears that Scott Peterson was able to murder and dispose of her body without anyone seeing him do it. What about Stacy Peterson -- did Drew Peterson possibly manage hiding her on his own? There's a $100K reward in that case too.

I think it hit $150,000 for Lyric and Elizabeth, I know it's at least $100,000. Unfortunately, I don't think it'll help there either.

Only in custodial cases, when a parent has disappeared with a child, as far as i know.

I think in the Mickey in Lafayette LA. case, a PI helped to solve it. Right?

If Dylan did hitch hike then its strange that the first car along kidnapped him as nobody else had seen him out and about IMO

Hubby and I were in the kitchen cooking when all of a sudden the screen door opened and this little girl about 4 years old came walking in. We were stunned. We said hi to her but she didn't say a word. She walked past us, past the kitchen table, into the hall, past the bathroom and into the bedroom and shut the door. I told Hubby is was going to go get her before she locked us out of the bedroom. So I opened the door and asked her what she was doing. Without a word, she walks past me, the bathroom, the kitchen table and out the sliding glass door whence she came. Hubby and I both looked at each other and started cracking up.

Later I told him, see, if this cottage had been rented by a perv, that little girl would have disappeared never to be seen again and no one would know what happened to her.

Crimes of opportunity, just like that. If Dylan was out front with his stuff, waiting for his father and someone came along, in a flash Dylan could have been taken.

same thing happened to us on a CARNIVAL ship!!! and we had to call for her safety. Parents had no idea where she was and she was mentally handicapped!

we have an (X) lawyer friend from DC area that came to visit us.
We were talking about missing children and in our case also
locally twins died in a fire and mom was not home.
He gave up law and became a teacher because to many cases
involved parents.
I am NOT accusing parents, but his conversations were very REAL.

Did you follow after her to be sure she was not lost... reunite with her parent??? That is mighty young to be out and about alone...that would concern me....IMHO
