I have been on this thread from the start and not missed a single post, but yesterday I went to the media section to refresh my memory on some quotes, etc...and found it very helpful. The info is all there.

No cell towers close by links already provided.

My understanding is this:
- All phones can be pinged via tower.
- Phones without GPS can be tracked down they are within a certain distance of the tower doing the pinging.
- Phones with GPS can be tracked down even if they are far away.

A snopes link that discusses using pings to get locations.

I could be wrong and we've been through the ping discussion so many times I'm starting to forget what people have said before. But in short if Dylan's phone was pinged, it was near a tower. That does not mean it could be located through it.

Finally, if there was no cell tower nearby, I believe Dylan would have no phone signal - so not replying to his friend's texts would be normal. From everything everyone has said I do think there was a signal at his father's house so he would be within distance of a cell tower.

I believe the ones you will find will refer to the HRD dogs detecting decomp at the lake on 2 separate days by 2 separate sets of animals. They train differently than ones that track.

They did though have dogs out on the Monday evening as well as the Tuesday.

If they had no scent items, or the ability to distinguish between scents why would the dogs continue with no one going back to retrieve items?

We talked about this very subject for weeks and quite in-depth. Believe me, I know the difference between cadaver dogs and air scent dogs and scent trail dogs and water dogs.

Air Scent Dogs
Pick up a scent and follow it, but not necessarily a certain person's scent. They don't work as well if other people are around (thus stopping volunteer searches, etc.)

Trailing Dogs
Use an item with a clean scent and follow scent on the ground. They'll only follow the scent of the particular person.

Tracking Dog
Follows a person's path, but doesn't use air scent. Often used when a scent item isn't available.

Cadaver Dog
A cadaver dog reacts only to the scent of a dead human.

Water Search Dog
A water search dog is trained to detect human scent that is in or under the water, they are trained to alert at the scent of body gasses. Usually done from a boat or shoreline.

There are also other types, but I don't think any of them would be used in a case like this. MOO

Also:

Three La Plata County Search and Rescue air-scent canines have conducted ground searches. Dylan's mother gave investigators some of Dylan's clothing so canines know his scent.

Not all phones ping. Only phones with GPS ping. DR didn't have a phone with GPS.
Phones without GPS "can" triangulate IF there are 3 or more or less towers to do so. The whole area of Vallecito doesn't have squat for cell service. IMO and the links I have provided. Been there done that with my cellphone (ATT) and a friend (Verizon) and neither worked with verbal/text on Dec. 8th. Take it for what it's worth.

Wherever DR was in Vallecto the past (when his mom "said" he had text service) how the heck did she know WHERE he was?

UGH

La Plata Search and Rescue: http://www.laplatasar.org/www/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=21&Itemid=46

La Plata County Search and Rescue members searched for Redwine Monday night in areas of County Road 500. Residents who have expressed an interest in assisting are being asked to search their properties and areas of Vallecito they are familiar with, Bender said.

The boy used to live in Vallecito, so authorities are notifying friends who live in the area.

CR 500: Bloodhounds were there on Monday/Tuesday (11/19 and 11/20):
Members of La Plata County Search & Rescue team using bloodhounds searched for the teen Monday night and Tuesday. The search area included the shoreline around Vallecito Lake, several small subdivisions, county roads, steep wooded hillsides and hiking trails. Many of the homes in the area are seasonal while some are occupied year around.

Do we know this for a fact?

No we don't. Although they did do a complete forensic search with a search warrant, does not mean that forensics had not been done in certain areas on previous entries to the home.

It has been stated that they had been in MR's home prior to the main search. For many involved in investigations, it would not be unusual to take items or do a minor forensic evaluation for DNA, et al prior to doing a more thorough one at a later date.

This does not mean that they for instance did not take items which could be tested like an ipod, sweatpants, even a milk carton on the day he initially went missing, or on any other requests which LE asked of MR, and apparently he agreed with.

They already said that during first search they did a walk through looking for things like Dylan's cell phone. I don't think they collected anything for forensic testing that time.

We know that cell service at MR's house wasn't very good. ER said that phone calls wouldn't go through but texts would, meaning that that the signal wasn't very strong or was inconsistent.

How in the world did ER know where DR was when his texts went through? She's assuming. IMO

I ran into this today. My DH assumed I was at Trader Joe's when I was actually at Whole Foods. I beat him home and he was "whaaaaaaaaaaaa". Don't assume.

I think we can both agree that we are beating a long dead horse.

Just because they used bloodhounds, it does not mean they had a proper uncontaminated scent item. And I really think that Dylan's mom would have been corrected in the press if she was WRONG about what she stated many times, in press and on tv. JMO

What did the bloodhounds use for D's scent? His clothing was reportedly worn again the next day according to Dad's description. And he didnt sleep on clean sheets or a pillow case. So anything from the couch was contaminated.

So what did MR give to the bloodhounds to use for D's fresh, pure scent item?

I disagree. I think the very first thing you ask your 13 yr old that is 7 hrs away when he texts you is ' Where are you.'

You think she didnt know if Dylan was at his dad's or his friends or walking down a street when he texted to check in?

BBM: Does to me. Bloodhounds do not just wander around sniffing random stuff.

The rest BLUE by me is just speculation and has no FACT for this case. If you can back this speculation (to me) with a link, please do.

Well then what did MR give to the bloodhounds to use as a scent item?

It is a fact that the clothing seen in the Walmart video was NOT left behind at the house. It is a fact because it was used in the description of what he was wearing when he went missing.

It is a fact that he slept on the couch without sheets because we saw video/pictures of MR sitting there on that couch, pointing to the blanket. There were no sheets.

Read the transcripts: mom never said that or asked where DR was when DR landed other than stammering around I ... er .. him ... er. Mom also "forgot" to mention the scrowly face to NG too.

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1212/03/ng.01.html

I don't think mom has a clue what DR did or does. Nope. Not a clue. He shows up randomly at friend's houses, he get's what he wants ... rides to skate parks, hitch hikes, etc. Not a clue. JMO.

Maybe he removed the sheets in between the time Dylan was there and the time video came by?

perhaps, but I doubt it. JMO

I'm going to take the word of a fellow sleuther who was THERE and stood right in front of MR's house with HER cell phone that had ATT service and said that neither she nor her friend who had Verizon could make a call OR text. That's good enough for me. This sleuther doesn't have an agenda, and was there and has first hand knowledge. We are lucky to have that kind of information!

If Dylan had service before when his mother said he did, perhaps it was in Bayfield or Durango, not near MR's house. It's obvious to me that cell and text service in the immediate area of MR's house isn't good at all. FWIW.

OKAY. Then why didn't MR go immediately to check on Dylan? Because MR said that he WAITED to hear from Dylan after texting him several times. He waited until almost 4 pm to receive a return text. WHY the heck would he do that if he didn't have any cell service?
