Why wouldn't he have been hitchhiking? He had hitch hiked in the past, he had friends within a 30-45 minute drive that he wanted to visit, he may not have known when his dad was coming home and he most likely knew that his dad wouldn't worry too much if he went out ... it makes perfect sense.
MR has said Dylan was aware he would be home at 11:00. Not really long to wait if you slept in, took time to eat & watch TV. though IMO & yet he didn't answer any texts, etc.
When did he stop answering texts ... when he went to the airport, or later?

Not trying to be disrespectful, but you're missing a lot of the story prior to the disappearance.
Dylan was an avid texter.
He was texting with his friend after he got off the plane. Published conversation is available.
Sent his mom a text to let her know he arrived.
Texting during WalMart and McDonald's trip.
He also had an ipod.
He had cell charger and ipod charger. They disappeared with the rest of his backpack.
No Electronic Communication past 9:37 pm, per LE
Father said he was giving him a ride to see friends when he returned home at 11am the next morning.
Father reported he left at 7:30am and Dylan was "out like a light" at that time, but later father said Dylan "understood" he would be back to drive him.
Father reports he found cereal bowl when he returned to the home. (evidence? of Dylan)
If he was asleep at 7:30 am, woke up sometime later and had time to eat, why no return calls to dad or his friend? Both reported to have attempted to contact him.
Why pack up and leave at 9-10am to hitch 20 miles when dad was coming at 11am?
His friend was moving around between grandma's house and another buddy. Why would he leave on this 20 mile trip without contacting anyone?
Landline phone in the house.
Computer in the house. Dylan had at least 3 facebook accounts, so computer savvy.
There was also a bike out front of the house. Looked new, but no idea if it was in working condition, so?
There is only ONE time he was reported to be hitching a ride...with his friends...when they were leaving the library in town...when it was snowing... (He lived in town with his mother until this past July)
IMO the answer to that question would be debatable. LE has stated that the last outgoing text was at 9:37. Who made that text, even LE can't know. What phone it came from would be part of the forensics to which we are not privy.
Thanks. If the computer was password protected, then Dylan couldn't use the computer. So he had an ipod touch?
Did dad lock the front door when he went out?
It seems to be about 15 miles from Vallecito to Bayfield. On the highway, that can take 20-30 minutes ... maybe 45 for a slow windy road ... but if Dylan was thinking that he could be in Bayfield in 20 minutes, why not just go there and get in touch with friends after he arrived?
Otto, here is a link to the timeline and media thread for the case (has a bunch of helpful links and information for anyone just joining Dylan's discussion)

Well, for one thing, he had no ride. Why would he assume he could get there in 20 minutes?

Dylan's phone broke AND
Dad's computer is password protected AND
Dylan doesn't know how to use a landline/doesn't have phone numbers AND
What about the iPod touch? Why was he not able to use that again, was that broken too?
So many coincidences....
Thanks. I can see the possibility that Dylan's cell phone was dead, that his father's computer was password protected and that Dylan could have been hitch hiking. Bayfield was 20-30 minutes away, and a 13 year old could decide to get a ride and sort out the details later.
