Yes it is frozen now. I probably should have added that I'm thinking in terms of what access did someone have back in November to put Dylan in the lake (assuming that's what happened.) Could a person pull over anywhere along that road and walk up to the lake? Is it only accessible by foot from certain trails? And remember, if someone did that they were carrying a hundred pounds. ETA: also at night in the dark.
From looking at Google maps, anyone could pull up fairly close in many places. There are several campgrounds with parking lots close to the lake and you can drive across the dam (I think that is the area they searched, as it would be easiest access). The closest parking lot is at Old Timers Day Use area.

Fruit Tingles, she's so cute. Look at that smile. Look at those cheeks. She is just precious. As much as we miss you, we know that it's because you are taking great care of the precious little angel. <muah>

Thank you very much, and Ransom too! Always difficult when I can't see the lay of the land for myself so I appreciate any help.

It leaves me wondering if there is any security/ranger patrol that might be happening at night to enforce the day-use rule or to collect fees from pay stations. I went looking for a Pine River Irrigation annual report that might show whether they budget for any security but so far no luck on that.
I'm guessing based on my experience with these types of areas, but unless it is high tourist season, there is no night patrol, usually one or two day rangers (to pick up trash, pick up pay stations and keep an eye on things), and there is usually only a cabin or motor home with a "host" for the campgrounds. The fees they charge are pretty low, so if there are not a lot of people around, not a lot of revenue.

Thank you!

Can you still drive over the top of the dam? In 2011 a project was started to relocate the road to below the face of the dam. Is the old road across the top still in place as a pedestrian/bike trail?

Eta: is there any lighting along the road in front of the dam or along the top of the dam?

I do not understand why the timeline, as released by the Sheriff Dept continues to be reported incorrectly.

snipped

I posted the press release through the PRT.

In a press release yesterday, Lt Ed Phippen, task force leader for the sheriff’s office, said tips are promptly checked, regardless of reliability and including several from psychics and mediums.
“We want to leave no stone unturned” he said.

Dylan flew from his home in Colorado Springs on Sunday, Nov. 18 to Durango for a court-ordered visit with his father.

An updated timeline for Dylan’s activities on Sunday Nov. 18 has been released:

5:46 p.m. Dylan arrived at Durango-La Plata airport.
7:05 p.m. Dylan at Durango Walmart
7:22 p.m. Dylan at Durango McDonalds
9:37 p.m. Dylan’s last text to his friends.

Any other info is from where? Link requested. TIA.

That's on the other side of the lake from where DR dad's house is located. He lives on the western side. In order to get to where you mapped, you have to drive all the way down the western side (CR 500 to CR 501), drive over the dam (501A) and then back up to get there. Long way around.

That's dated 2007 and the Bureau of Reclamation started a project to move the road off the dam in 2011. I'm looking to see if that project was actually finished because that would mean you couldn't just drive along the top of the dam and dispose of a body. You'd have to carry him up over the dam using a pedestrian/bike path if you intended to drop him into the water there with some weights. Which might be considred given that that's going to be the deepest spot and he'd end up there anyway.

Also looking for lighting in the area. Since 2001 dam security has been a big issue. Dams are considered to be vulnerable spots and so many have been fitted with lighting, CCTV, and other security including security patrols.

Of course that varies by dam and so far I haven't been able to dig out the specifics at Vallecito but I think that if Dylan is in the lake, he was put there off one of the sides and not off the dam because of access and possibly security.

There are stretches of road where the lake looks pretty accessible but the ground also looks like it might hold tire and footprints. That's via Google maps images so I need more research. Other areas along the road are set a ways back from the lake and remember if someone did this they're carrying 100 pounds so I'm guessing they don't want to walk very far. Other stretches are actually private property and I'm thinking its probably dog country and no one has come forward to say their dogs were barking.

All IMO and all that.

I am guessing that if they have video from McDonald's, it did not show Dylan clear enough to use for the public, as the Walmart video did. I do not think LE would assume he was there if they did not see him.

  • #114
The videos released by LE of Dylan would be primarily to give the public a description of him. It shows what he was wearing, etc. when last seen.

Here is a video that shows a camera facing out the drive thru window at a McDonalds.

http://www.9news.com/video/1579777777001/1/Cow-wanders-up-to-McDonalds-drive-thru-window-

I don't think LE would put it in the timeline if they didn't have video or a positive ID from a worker.

eta: never mind I just rewatched it and the workers took the pictures. lol

They are planning an event at a restaurant in Bayfield to watch the show.
Hmm.
