Because it could affect her whole military career, which is just starting out. To get into the academy she would have had extensive background checks (I have 2 18 year old female relatives going into the AF academy there, and one relative who flies planes all over, internationally, for AF), and her mother said she had never done anything wrong or broken any rules. It's hard enough for females to compete in the armed services at the academy level which is the main conduit for becoming an officer. So I think she was mortified, embarrassed, and I doubt, IMO, that a young person in her position as a beginning cadet would have caused a melee to the point of being handcuffed over who had the keys to the car. So, if you were referring to me, that's why I always refer to the USAF, it's hard to get in, and it's hard to stay in, and even rougher for women who have to deal with all the sexual assaults and discrimination.
