Women's prison population strains system

For what it’s worth, that is a very old article (looks like it’s from 1999). I assume things aren’t necessarily better, but probably very different.

(Full disclosure, I’m one of those bleeding hearts who doesn’t think prisons should be inhumane zoos for people; too many people behind bars who are wrongfully convicted or serving time for minor drug offenses.)

I can't keep a dry eye when Landen is speaking. My heart truly breaks for her and for AS.
Hours later and her statement is still with me.

Well this is weird. Defense lawyers headed into Courthouse this morning because Jury has sent questions to the Judge.

I don’t know if the Court TV journalist asked a question or what prompted him …

Thanks, I was aware of the date but will add a date disclaimer.

Nonetheless, it has good stats on the rise in female inmates, cost of the DWCF, and how by the time construction was completed, a shortage of beds would still be on the rise!

DA Allen says the charge that was dismissed for #LeteciaStauch was a solicitation to escape jail. He was ready to get her to DOC - and didn’t want to wait to prosecute that charge which was minuscule compared to #GannonStauch’s murder.

Gannon’s father, Al Stauch, is speaking. He says this verdict “solidifies the loss that he’s never going to see his boy again… we’re never going to let him go.” He says the only crime #GannonStauch committed was being a momma’s boy.

Gannon’s mom says about her son’s body being found: “It’s one of the hardest things to accept but it’s one of the biggest pieces to this puzzle.” From before that moment, some of Landen Bullard Hiott speaking at the press conference here

During the victim impact statements I watched the defense. They generally sat back and seemed unmoved. While I expect them to keep a 'stiff upper lip' for their defendant, and I absolutely respect the importance of a strong defense for a fair judicial system, I wondered if I might catch a trembling lip. Instead I saw them often leaning way back in their chairs with their hands/thumbs intertwined. I guess I thought they would generally be sitting up, with hands clasped on the table, showing respect and recognizing the gravity of the victims' statements. But maybe that's just me.

I haven't had time to follow the trial in detail, but I did watch the judge's sentencing comments. He seemed like a real human being and he called Leticia out for using 'mental health' as an excuse. He defended people struggling with mental health issues and he cut her no slack. Good on him!

Recent legislation has also attempted to address the overcrowding of facilities:

La Vista Correctional Facility (LVCF) was opened in July 2006, providing the Colorado Department of Corrections with a new multi-custody Level III facility for female inmates. In July 2020, legislation was passed reducing the bed capacity from 707 to 560...

I agree with everything you said. That's exactly the same way that I feel. I am so disappointed in the defense attorneys. Attorney Cook rocking back and forth in the chair was more than I could take and attorney Tolini hiding from view...ridiculous. No regard for the family of a murdered child.

Judge Werner covered it all, imo. Well done.

Me, I'm grateful T had her toilet paper earplugs.

It kept her nasty brain from spilling into the courtroom. Maybe it kept all her stupid thoughts in there too.

I'm glad she's done.

Thanks for this follow up. I admittedly cringe inwardly when people are cheering on awful prison conditions*, and I might have misunderstood your slant.

(*or “prison justice”/inmates assaulting other inmates, but that’s another topic.)

A portion of AS speaking about Gannon:

:(

"Gannon was truly my buddy. Very recently before he died, the most alarming thing he did was call me dad. Up until age 10 or 11, I was daddy. But the last months of his life, I was dad. He finally started asking me to regularly play ball with him."

Life without the possibility of parole couldn’t have happened to a more deserving monster.

Gannon and his incredible spirit will never be forgotten.

Landen, Gannon's biological mom, invited me over to do the first sit down interview with her following today's verdict. She has so much to say to the community about Gannon, the painful moments in this trial, the woman now convicted of killing her son #LeteciaStauch #Gannonstauch

AS was able to get a glimpse of the young man that Gannon was becoming. That special period of time where a son isn’t a little boy anymore, and starts calling ‘daddy’ just ‘dad’.

I’m sure in due time AS will treasure that memory. The emotion is still too raw right now.
