Huh? Is this a mistake?

Not a mistake but it is from the 7th- They checked out the dad, who lives in MO, and do not believe he was involved.

I believe that they already have searched Dad's house in Missouri and dad is not POI. Unless something has changed?

See the date on the article. It was on the 7th, before they checked the dad out.

I wondered this last night and still wonder it -- whether the neighborhood kids found the backpack elsewhere, like down in that stream in the open area, and pulled it up to the street thinking they were doing somebody a favor by rescuing the pack.

The detective in the late-night press conference Sunday night was pleading for parents to talk to their kids and assure them they weren't in trouble, so I think he's wondering the same thing.

I have been very impressed by Westminster LE -- they're thorough, professional, up to date, and respectful of the public without allowing it to jeopardize the investigation. They don't appear to have made any assumptions or left any stone unturned.

LE has been great. Reminds me of the case of 12 yr old Brittany in Roanoke, VA where the mother was murdered and the bf took her to San Fran, CA and they were soon found. LE had pressers almost everyday with updates and were very professional and media savvy. This group seems as well and even more advanced in using social networking. Kudos to them.

I feel that if someone intended to change her appearance and take her out of state, the bag would not be appearing 2 days later.

They've also said no one is ruled out, as well as no scenario.

On glasses: she might not be wearing them because they'd gotten broken. Taking her eyeglasses would also make it harder for her to recognize where she was and be able to escape or judge distances and such.

I don't know that LE is thinking she doesn't have them so much as they know the public *is* looking for a girl with purple glasses and black puffy jacket. They want us to be looking for the girl, not the glasses or puffy jacket.

Could always be more, but I think they're trying to avoid an Elizabeth Smart situation.

That home address is not accurate. Her home is north of the park. Not south.

From the last thread ... I'm wondering how your came to that conclusion. Am I missing something, or is the home south of the park ... and the school is south of the home?

"After she left her home, near 107th Avenue and Moore Street" she did not arrive at Chelsea Park at Chelsea Park, 10765 Moore Street

From your link above

Investigators searched the home shared by Ridgeway's father and grandmother. They live in Independence, Mo.

"The police asked if they could search my house and I said yes because we'd do anything in the world to get her back, " said Donna Moss, Ridgeway's grandmother. "We want her back as soon as we can get her."

It sounds as though they're just covering all the bases, checking out every possibility. Her father's grandmother consented to the search, it doesn't sound as if she thinks there's anything they have to hide.

Yes, that was from the brief presser.

I'm rather sad that DNA is being taken from the home. :(

Sorry Surfie, my internet bugged out, didn't hear a thing. Do you mean DNA, as in a sample for identification purposes of Jessica?

Thanks, I know that. I should have looked closer, the article popped up on crimesider as if it were a new story.

Perhaps Jessica usually had a change of clothes in her bag- gym clothes, Brownie uniform, or just an extra change in case of emergency. I knew a little girl who was always tearing her clothes or spilling spaghetti sauce on herself, and my, er, rather her mother always had to bring something into school.

If there was usually that extra set of clothing in her bag, and it wasn't there when the bag was found...

No, they went to MO to interview her father, and search Jessica's grandmother's home. (I think the father and grandmother live together).

Jessica lives with mom, aunt, & Jessica's maternal grandmother.

Jessica's dad lives with his grandmother, Jessica's paternal great-grandmother.

The presser indicated they were taking DNA from family members in the home.

I assume they need this to rule out family members from any "unknown" DNA that might be found on her bag and water bottle.

The press needs to add her hair may have been cut and the color changed in order to change her appearance. It's a given, but they need reminded. IMO

Jessica's home is about 500 ft. north of the park on Moore Street. She meets her friends somewhere in Chelsea Park, then they walk south and cross the open space to Witt Elementary School.

This may be a stupid questions, but....

Why is it that they are starting with the "open areas"? I understand that they're easier to search, to get them out of the way quickly and move on, but how likely is it that a child would be taken to an open area? I can understand searching the open areas through which she walked, but I got the feeling that they're just searching all open areas (even those over by where the backpack was found). To me, this seems like a waste of time, when there's already been so much lost time.
