What if someone mailed Kelsey's cellphone to a random home in a really poor part of Idaho? The indigent resident receiving the package might open it and NOT go to the police. If the phone was then "jail broke" from Verizon, then Verizon wouldn't be able to ping it anymore. It would then appear that Kelsey's phone was "dead" or not charged. It would appear that Kelsey traveled to Idaho and disappeared.
When a phone connects to the cellular network it identifies itself with two important numbers - IMEI and IMSI - in addition to some other data. The IMEI is a globally unique number that identifies the handset and the IMSI identifies the Sim card. This is how law enforcement or spy agencies can identify if a person used the same handset with different Sim cards or used the same Sim Card in different handsets. Law enforcement would be able to know that Kelsey's handset was still in Idaho even if the phone was "jail broke" and using a different Sim card.

The first one must be home.

Where would "home" be for her? Colorado? Washington? Idaho? Kansas? or Arizona? I have seen she has lived in all of those states.

I'm so confused. At the press conference and in all the articles I read earlier, the welfare check was conducted on Dec 2nd, but now it looks like the articles all say it was Nov 25th. I seriously can't understand what is going on with this case.
There is a good timeline at this link: Kelsey Berreth Case: What to Know About the Missing Colorado Mom Last Seen on Thanksgiving Day

Sunday, Dec. 2
Kelsey’s mother, Cheryl, reported her daughter missing after being unable to reach her. Cheryl reached out to Frazee, who called her back and said he hadn’t heard from her since she had last texted.

Officers with the Woodlawn Park Police conducted a community care takers search on Kelsey’s home, which was empty. Her cars, her clothes and her toothbrush all appeared untouched since Thanksgiving, authorities said.

Home to me is where your mother is or where you grew up in the family.

You would think that someone willing to travel to Idaho to create a false ping would also be willing to move one of her cars and pack a suitcase so it looks like she left on her own.

Berreth's mother called police for a welfare check on November 25, but she wasn't there.

Search intensifies for mom who vanished on Thanksgiving Day
Honestly, watch the press conference from yesterday. The police chief specifically said that they did the welfare check after Kelsey's mother reported her missing and that Kelsey's mother reported her missing on December 2nd. He even gave the minute and hour of the day on December 2nd that Kelsey's mother made the report.

I thought of this too.

Also, they could've created a false ping 4 hours away instead of 8. That's a long way to go...

I've wondered about this.

As more info surfaces it seems less and less of a possibility but I am holding out hope she left on her own accord. That is the only way I can see this having even somewhat of a positive outcome. The behavior of the father of her child certainly raises a lot of questions but it seems there are a lot of questions regarding the relationship overall. I just think moving to a new place, a new baby, then what seems to be a broken relationship, the upcoming holidays, coupled with who knows what else she was dealing with in her life I'm hoping she just decided to disappear. No, I do not think it is the most likely but it is certainly quite probable and one in which hopefully she could return from safely. MOO

I agree.

The fact that no vehicles are missing, coupled with some of the other intriguing aspects of this case, doesn’t make me feel optimistic here.

There’s still a lot we don’t know though.

Her phone may have been mailed to somewhere in Idaho or thrown into a random transport truck and it pinged in Idaho. Once it runs out of charge, it appears Kelsey has vanished on her alleged vacation.

Her mom asked for a "welfare check" on November 25. LE went to her home and she wasn't there. Nothing else LE can do because KP is a healthy adult and not considered endangered. Her mom reported her "missing" on Dec. 2 and LE got actively involved. JMO

She is missing.
He claims to have seen her on the day she was last on video and no one has claimed to see her afterward.
He has their child.
How is this not enough to get a search warrant?

Good point. Unless it was someone who was already had a car at her house.

I’ve never liked that theory.

It would ping along the way, and require someone to receive it on the other end (if mailed).

We just don’t see people doing that with any regularity.

For this particular fact, since it was stated at the press conference, we don't need to rely on the articles - we can hear the chief provide the date himself. The press conference is linked a few posts above for anyone who wants to fact check it.

There’s still no proof that a crime was committed in the first place.

They need probable cause to get a search warrant, and they apparently haven’t met that burden yet.

Suspicious behavior isn’t enough.

Her mother made the Missing Person report on December 2. She requested the welfare check on November 25. All LE can do in a welfare check for an adult is go to the home and see if the person is there. Most jurisdictions don't get involved immediately if the adult is not considered endangered. JMO
