CO CO - Nonnie Dotson, 33, Littleton, 19 Nov 2006

  • #101
For many who gathered at Clement Park on Sunday afternoon, the spiraling white and pink balloons were a beautiful but grim reminder that Nonnie Dotson isn't coming back.

Her friends and family know this because Dotson, a single mother and Air Force nurse, would never have willingly left her young daughter.

They know it because she had so many plans for herself and little Savannah.

And they know it because of the raw feeling in their guts.

When Candice Doyle argued with her 33-year-old daughter, Nonnie Dotson, it was over things they had in common — both military women, both single mothers who juggled family and a hunger for heroism.

The pair saw things differently, but in the year since Dotson disappeared, Doyle has reflected more on what they shared and the glories of Nonnie's life, from surviving childhood cancer to her desire to serve on the front lines.

"When I was a kid, I wished I was old enough to be in Vietnam," Doyle said. "I wanted to be a war nurse, so I can understand what she wanted."

The mystery that remains: what happened to Dotson, who disappeared last year during a pre-Thanksgiving visit with her brother in Littleton and left behind a 16-month-old daughter.

"She walked out our front door and vanished," said sister-in-law Aimee Dotson. "I mean, just poof!"

Thanks for the updates. It doesn't seem the case is progressing very rapidly but it does seem her family is grieving terribly. There has to be more info out there to bring Nonnie home to her family. This is one of those cases where LE needs to share something to get more tips as without them the case is sure to go cold.

It just irks me that the "sperm donar" of that baby girl is trying to get her. He didn't want anything to do with her when Nonnie was alive. That little girl would be so much better off with Nonnie's parents. I just hope and pray that he doesn't win this battle. He is just a creep.

The custody battle for Savannah Dotson — a toddler whose mother disappeared more than a year ago — began Tuesday in state District Court, pitting a biological father who maintains he has a legal right to raise his child against maternal grandparents who argue he's never played a role in her life.

Fighting for the 21/2-year-old is Edward Vehle, who says he would provide a loving home for Savannah, the most important person in his life.

"I want to be there when she wakes up in the morning. I want to make her breakfast and comb the knots in her hair. I want to teach her how to ride a blue bicycle. I want to be there when she joins the Brownies and cheerleaders. ... I want to be there always for her," he testified.

Attorneys for the grandparents, Candice and Kevin Doyle, argue that they should get custody, saying Savannah's father was absent for the first 18 months of her life.

"Ed decides he wants custody of Savannah — a child he has never met. It's like a trophy," the Doyles' attorney, H.E. Mendez, told jurors.

The custody battle over a 2-and-a-half-year-old San Antonio girl continues.

On Monday, Savannah Dotson's maternal grandmother, Candice Dotson, took the stand. Candice has been caring for the child since her mother, 33-year-old Nonnie Dotson, disappeared in November 2006.

Both Candice and Savannah's father, Ed Bailey, want sole custody, but after six days of testimony, there's no new information to explain what happened to Nonnie.

The parents of an Air Force nurse who went missing more than a year ago in the Denver area have lost their fight to maintain custody of their granddaughter. The biological father won a court battle Thursday to take custody of Nonnie Dotson's daughter.

Kevin Doyle and Candice Dotson, Nonnie's parents, moved to San Antonio from California after her disappearance to raise 2-year-old Savannah.

A jury made a ruling on the custody fight in Texas.

Edward Vehle, Savannah's father, now has custody. He had been visiting on weekends and said he had a right to raise his daughter.

I don't see why the little girl's dad shouldn't have her. If he's been visiting her on weekends since Nonnie disappeared, obviously he's gotten to know her. I think it's nice, actually, that a father stepped up and took responsibility for his kid for a change.

You definitely have the right to your opinion.... but I am curious if you followed this entire case closely? (I don't know if you did, so I'm asking ;)).

I am less than thrilled with this outcome. Does anyone know if Vehle has gotten a job in the meantime or is his still sponging off his mother?

Well, he didn't want anything to do with the baby when Nonnie was alive and well. I guess at least he still has avoided paying child support payments. I suspect him in the disappearance of Nonnie. So, as I see it, it's just like O.J. raising his children after he murdered his ex-wife...

Is the man being called a suspect by the police? Wasn't he in another state at the time Nonnie disappeared? At least there was enough evidence against OJ to put him on trial.

I worked with Nonnie's sister in law and they hired a psychic and this is what they were given ... thought I'd share ...

Nonnie DOtson missing person Sunday November 19, 2006
With a missing person one of the things I have to rule out is a suicide. I get no indication that she was depressed enough to commit suicide. She loves her little girl and she would not have left her. So that is a big indicator to me that this is not a voluntary absence.
She had to be careful fmancialiy but she does not have a problem with that. She is a cautious person with money that does not seem to be the source of the problem.
Edward Vehle is the father of her child from San Antonio, TX. I don t get any indication that he is involved in this.
The impression Pm getting was that she was seeing someone. He is from the same general work area she is from. They met through mutual friends. I don’t get the feeling that Nonnie was interested in hint I believe she met him once, kind of a blind date. He was immediately obsessed with her but she was really put off by him.
I get the feeling this man has been stalking her ever since that first meeting. Nonnic never agreed to meet him again hut he was following her.
The night she disappeared he was watching the house where she was staying. And he saw her come outside several times and then he foliowed her.
I get the feeling that she was walking initially and then he stopped and offered her a ride. She was uncomfortable with that but she agreed to take the ride.
As she was riding with him she started to wonder what he was doing there. She became uncomfortable when he drove past the area she wanted to go to and would not stop. I believe that this man took her to a wooded area that is within about 5-7 miles from the house she was visiting.
He forced her out of the car at gunpoint. He attacked her because she tried to fight him off. He left her near the edge of the woods. Now the road they were on when he drove to the wooded area has a state highway symbol, like the sign is like a shield in shape and I see the numbers 65. Because T am dyslexic I might reverse the numbers so you would need to check the numbers 65 or 56.
He took her into the woods right beside this highway. They had passed what looks like a rest area not long before he pulled over. There is a restaurant there and restrooms are available because she tried to get him to pull in there saying she needed to go to the bathroom. She was hoping to get help there but he refused to
pull over.
When he did pull over he pulled out a gun and she tried to fight him off.
You are looking for a smaller state road near Chatfield Lake that will have a shield shaped sign with a 6and a 5 on it.
She was surprised to see him. He has been stalking her ever since she first met him.
When she met him he gave her the creeps. She wanted nothing more to do with him and one of the reasons she felt that way was that he was so possessive right from the beginning. She was wise enough to realize that is usually present in an abusive man.
The friends that introduced him never knew his first wife so they are not aware he was violent with his first wife. Otherwise they never would have introduced her.
He is so quickly obsessed with her it is really abnormal behavior. He does have a history of abuse with women. Not just his wife but dates that he went on he became violent easily and he wouid be obsessive from the time he would first meet someone.
I think the difficulty in identifying him with her disappearance would be that her contact with him was just this one date. She never went out with him again. But he followed her from that point forward.
What concerns me is that he is currently stalking another woman. Very similar pattern he went on one date and has fastened on her. She does not seem to be aware he is following her. But she also refhsed to go out with him again.
As I look at these maps he is headed toward Chatfield Lake on a large interstate probably 470. He came off that road headed off to the right and exited near a recreation area and state game iands. The rest area on 470 that she tried to get him to pull over in is about a mile before the exit that he took.
He is not real familiar with the area and seems to want to stay near 470 so he can exit the area quickly. He does have a weapon on him and he has rope and plastic bags in the back of his van. So I would say this is partly premeditated. He intended to abduct her given a chance to do so.
He exits 470 on an exit ramp with a sharp curve because he took that curve almost too fast. The van he’s driving veered because of his speed. So the angle of that exit ramp is pretty sharp.
At the bottom of the ramp he made a left and traveied through a city like area until he came to a road sign that is in the shape of a shield and it shows the numbers 6 and 5, and the words state game land are at the bottom of the sign. Above the game land part it says something about Chatl9eld Lake and recreation. He turned toward the direction indicated on that sign for the recreation area. He is expecting it to be isolated that time of year which he feels will help him control her.
I notice several times she has fried to get out of the vehicie and the door handle on her side is not working so she is trapped in there. But she did try to get out.
He entered the recreation area and when he entered, it he bore to the right. The road to the left was blocked he went to the right because it wasn’t blocked.
Me must be near a large body of water. I can smell the water and I can feel the cold and the moisture from a large body of water. So he must be near the lake because I am sensing a lot of water.
They passed another sign that has the symbol for the park which is also in the shape of a shield and then they passed a sign that says something about bear or bears. I don’t think it means bears, I think it is the name of something that once had to do with bears. The letters on that sign appear smudged and I can’t read
it properly.
It’s not long after he passes the sign with bear on it that he pulls over.
She fought him hard. She has his DNA under her nails. He was scratched enough by her that he carries scars on his forearms that she put there. At first he wore makeup to cover them up. Now he claims he got the scars in combat.
She also got hold of some kind of necklace or jewelry that he had around his neck. He looked for that later and did not fmd it. She grabbed it and hid it in her clothes. That should still be there and it is engraved or marked in some way with his name. So that would be identifiable as belonging to him.
The van looks like a family kind of van- It has the sliding doors on the side. It is a dark blue, almost navy blue color. It has metallic sparkles of some sort in the paint. It looks to me like he has a sleeping bag in the back of the van. Along with some tools and cameras.
Oh my God he took pictures of her. If he’s kept those that will certainly link him to her death.
He was stalking her and taking pictures of her while he stalked her. So he took a lot of pictures of her as she was going about her no!!!al business.
He seems to work night shift and then he sleeps in the early morning and roams around all afternoon. So the stalking that he does is in the afternoon.
He left her in a wooded area not the water.
He is about six feet tall, light colored hair, gray eyes. He sometimes has a mustache but he changes his appearance regularly so he won’t be recognized. He wears glasses sometimes with dark frames and sometimes he wears contacts. His appearance is not remarkable. He does not stand out in a crowd. He puts different hats on and stuff to disguise himself.
He has a scar above his upper lip, it’s a small scar. Other than that scar he has one on his abdomen. I think that may be from an appendix operation when he was a kid.
He wears his hair cut short and parted on the left. He looks military in the way he moves and the short hair. He is obsessively neat and even presses his pants to get a sharp crease.
If a cop interviewed him he won’t look a Inaa iii the eye. But when you meet his ga2e you will instantly notice the lack of emotion in his flice. His eyes look empty and that is what put Nonnie off. He scared her on an instinctive level.
He is a medium build guy. He is fit and exercises a lot. He runs in marathons. He also does cycling.
He has a iot of little obsessive rituals in how he cleans his house and his workspace. If a cop wanted to rattle him he should interfere with those rituals. He gets angry quickly when his nced for order Is Interfered with.
He also gets upset when an authority figure disrespects him. He would be susceptible to the good guy bad guy routine with one cop who acts like he hates women and sympathizes with his hatred of women. The other cop needs to act like he likes women in a positive and close way and has good relationships with women. That will make him mad because of the disparity in points of view and he will be jealous of a man who has good empathy with women.
He has a deep seated hatred of women this drives his obsessive need to control them.
When he was stalking her at her brother’s he parked a couple of biocks away and hid near a darkened
house. I dont think anybody was home in that house.
He has sniper training and that is part of what he uses when he’s stalking. He knows how to watch someone without being seen
He is an excellent shot and has medals for that.
I do feel he is in the military and was at the time he attacked her.
He has served in a wan I’m trying to figure out what conflict it is but irs all desert images. The type of soil
I am seeing it would probably be the Persian Gulf or Iraq. It does not look like Afghan soil. ‘have lived in
Afghanistan, this is not like that soil.
He has been wounded several times and could have been getting follow up treament. But I dont think he works in the hospital. He seems to be working in an office. He’s not happy with that. He fancies himself a man of action but with his injuries ‘don’t think hed be allowed to go back into combat.

One Saturday another RN that I work with and I went to Chatfield and Bear Creek with this in hand and tried to locate her remains, but found nothing. We pray she'll be found one of these days.

This is very interesting and thank you for posting it! I've wondered if anything is happening with Nonnie's case but haven't seen any articles for ages. I'm just wondering, and almost hate to suggest it, but could decomposition after this much time have made it so you didn't locate anything? Her clothes would still be there though, wouldn't they? Is there a lot of wild animal activity around there? :(

Thank you for updating this thread. It's nice to see it bumped up again. I've thought about her case several times, wondering what in the world happened to her.

Oh I'm almost positive decomposition would be horrid esp. if it was in a wooded, dark, wet area close to the water. Plus she could be at the bottom of the lake or sent down the river and who knows where.

I feel for the family; Nonnie's brother and wife (who I worked with) are divorcing and I'm sure the stress of this case didn't help matters. And the little girl is living with her Dad now.

Yes we do have wild animal activity around there ... so I'm sure finding anything would be very difficult at this point.

Her sis in law also said that there's a chance he dumped / buried her where they were building a building and since then the concrete's been poured, etc. So who knows.

I think it's horribly tragic for all. I will keep you informed if I know anything else.

I've been in touch with a friend of hers I met off of myspace (he and his wife) and asked him if he knew of any man she was involved with that this person could be, he doesn't know of anyone but is asking around.

You guys might want to check out North Carolina connections. Seems a lot of military people are being murdered by lovers/ex-husbands. It is very scary what has gone on and the note writer in Touma's case brought up a post by someone to check Nonnie Dotson. That has left me with a hinkey feeling since I read it.

The connections could be remote but it is worth a shot for LE.
