Remains found in Security-Widefield home believed to be connected to missing person case

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that human remains found on Monday are believed to be linked to a 2024 missing person case.

'SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo. (KKTV) - The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that human remains found on Monday are believed to be linked to a 2024 missing person case.

Deputies say they received a call on Monday regarding a body found in the attic of a home on McGrew Circle in Security-Widefield.

According to the sheriff’s office, the body was found by contractors who were conducting a mold inspection at the home.

They say the home was previously connected to a missing person case of 41-year-old Rueben Matthews. EPSO shared in April that they were searching for Matthews, who had last been seen in December 2024 leaving his home on McGrew Circle.'

''According to previously released information from EPSO, Matthews left following a domestic dispute related to a relationship ending, and never contacted friends or family.

EPSO said investigators believe the body found on Monday is Matthews based on physical characteristics and other evidence at the scene, though an official identification will be made by the El Paso County Coroner. The coroner will also determine the official cause and manner of death.

“Currently, this is an active and ongoing investigation,” EPSO said. “The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to Mr. Matthews’ family and friends during this difficult time.”
