Coincidences

I can't tell which is part of the RN and which is from the movie. Do you think you could bold the Ramsey RN and leave the movie RN in plain text?

Good find Murri,

It does read that way doesn't it.
However I believe that only shows it was written by an amateur who clearly watched too many movies.

"What did they do, hire a Publicist?"....indeed.

Just a little comparison of RN with the transcript of the phone call to Danny DeVito in Ruthless People.

Mr Stone

1. "Mr. Ramsey.

Listen very carefully. We have kidnapped your wife.

We have no qualms about killing and will do so at the slightest provocation.

(Do you understand?)

2. Listen carefully! We are a group of individuals that represent
3. a small foreign faction. We xx respect your bussiness
4. but not the country that it serves. At this time we have
5. your daughter in our posession. She is safe and unharmed and
6. if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to
7. the letter.

You are not the only
32. fat cat around so don't think that killing will be difficult.

You are to obtain a new, black, American tourister? Briefcase, model no 8104.

(Do you understand?)

Make sure
10. that you bring an adequate size attache to the bank.

In it you will place $500,000 in unmarked, non-sequentially numbered, $100 bills.

(Do you understand?)

8. You will withdraw $118,000.00 from your account. $100,000 will be
9. in $100 bills and the remaining $18,000 in $20 bills

Monday morning at 11am, you will proceed with case in hand to Hope Street Plaza and wait for a phone to ring. You will receive further instructions then.

(Do you understand?)

When you get
11. home you will put the money in a brown paper bag. I will call you
12. between 8 and 10 am tomorrow to instruct you on delivery. The
13. delivery will be exhausting so I advise you to be rested. If we
14. monitor you getting the money early, we might call you early to
15. arrange an earlier delivery of the money and hence a earlier
16. delivery pickup of your daughter.

You will be watched at all phases of execution, if anyone is with you or if any action is not carried out to our complete satisfaction, it will be considered an infraction of the rules and your wife will be killed.

(Do you understand?)

17. Any deviation of my instructions will result in the immediate
18. execution of your daughter. You will also be denied her remains
19. for proper burial. The two gentlemen watching over your daughter
20. do not particularly like you so I advise you not to provoke them.

If you notify the Police, your wife will be killed. If you notify the media, she will be killed. If you deviate from our instructions in any way whatsoever, she will be killed.

(Do you understand?)

21. Speaking to anyone about your situation, such as Police, F.B.I.,
22. etc., will result in your daughter being beheaded. If we catch you
23. talking to a stray dog, she dies. If you alert bank authorities, she
24. dies. If the money is in any way marked or tampered with, she dies.
25. You will be scanned for electronic devices and if any are found, she
26. dies.

You can try to deceive us but be warned that we are familiar
27. with Law enforcement countermeasures and tactics. You stand a 99%
28. chance of killing your daughter if you try to out smart us. Follow
29. our instructions and you stand a 100% chance of getting her back.
30. You and your family are under constant scrutiny as well as the
31. authorities. Don't try to grow a brain John. Don't
33. underestimate us John. Use that good southern common sense of yours.
34. It is up to you now John!
35. Victory!
36. S.B.T.C."

Heyya MF.

Good Post.
The dialogue is interchangeable, typical of scripted rn's.
The JBR rn does have a scripted tone.

Ruthless People:

...... [answers phone] Hello?

Ken Kessler: Mr. Stone, listen very carefully. We have kidnapped your wife. We have no qualms about killing, we'll do so at the slightest provocation. Do you understand?
Sam Stone: Who the hell is this? Is this some kind of a joke?
Ken Kessler: I have no patience for stupid questions, Mr. Stone, and I don't like repeated myself. Do you understand?
Sam Stone: [face lights up] All right. I'm sorry, please continue.
Ken Kessler: You are to obtain a new, black, American Tourister briefcase, Model Number 8-1-0-4. Do you understand?
Sam Stone: Yes.
Ken Kessler: In it, you will place $500,000 in unmarked, non-sequentially numbered $100 bills. Do you understand?
Sam Stone: Sure.
[as the conversation goes on, a smile appears on Sam's face, and gets wider and wider... ]
Ken Kessler: Monday morning, ten o'clock, you will proceed with case in hand to Hope Street Plaza, and wait for a phone to ring. You will receive further instructions then. Do you understand?
Sam Stone: Yes, I do.
Ken Kessler: You will be watched at all phases of execution. If you fail to appear at the designated time, or if any phase is not carried out to our complete satisfaction, it will be considered an infraction of the rules, and your wife will be killed. Do you understand?
Sam Stone: I believe so.
Ken Kessler: If you notify the police, your wife will be killed. If you notify the media, she will be killed. If you deviate from our instructions in any way whatsoever, she will be killed. Do you understand?
[Sam's grin is about to split his face open]
Sam Stone: Perfectly.
[Cut to later, outside the Stone mansion, as fleets of police cars and news vans pull up]

Interesting that the RN closely resembles the script from the movie "Ruthless People" which is described as a 'black comedy'. It's as if this started out as a sick joke.

"Mr Ramsey" is something an employee would write. Towards the end the use of "John" and the peremptory tone makes me wonder about any affairs he might have had. Apparently his first marriage broke up due to an affair with an employee. JR described her as like the movie Fatal Attraction. JR is reported to have suspected her, but there may have been others he didn't own up to in his second marriage. That's the type of person who might habour a long standing anger against him and his new family.

I also thought about S.B.T.C John was the CEO of the company, so I wonder if he was referred to by the employees as the "Chief". The saying from Get Smart, Sorry Bout That (this) Chief, was very popular then. It would explain why no SFF has been identified with these initials, as it was just an acronym for a well used catch phrase.

Thanks Tad, I'm getting more confident that it was a script, and that is one reason for the length. Written it takes up 2.5 pages, but spoken it would only take 2-3 minutes.

If it were meant to be a script, why would they have left it in the house? Even if they had not meant to kill her they would have taken the body in order to get the money. And lastly, why would they have used such a ridiculous movie to plagarize? If you want to instill fear in someone's heart, you obviously do not use words from a comedy, even a "black comedy". The writer of the note used every line from every kidnap movie they could think of out of sheer panic and that was pretty obvious to all the experts.

Well, as a big fan of Get Smart, I hate to ruin your theory, but Max never dropped the 'A' from 'About'.

Sorry about that Chief.

Maybe he did, but that wasn't how everyone else heard it.

Have a look at acronym finder. SBTC - sorry 'bout that Chief. Would you believe.... SABT - zip!

Missed by that much!!

Acronym Finder

Umm...I think we're looking at different pages cos it ain't there.

I also think your guess at the 'C' being for Chief and then extrapolating that into a misquoted quote from a TV series from the 1960s (admittedly syndicated and still shown) is a bit of a stretch.

I mean 'Small Business Technology Coalition' fits better with what we know.
He was in a business, it was technology based, they said they were from a small foreign faction....coalition/faction...fits well. SBTC! Voila! Solved.

Point being, I think trying to make SBTC fit something is a bit of a time waster.

Just disregard the primary evidence, cause it doesn't fit the theory. LOL, typical RDI.

IMO, When the R's were writing the RN, they just chose a random acronym to match the name of the fictional foreign faction. I don't think it stands for anything or really has a significance.

Actually, the evidence is the "SBTC", not the trying to link it to Get Smart.
Partial credit.

And don't resort to name calling, we were getting along so well.

Are you saying you are not RDI? If so, it's hardly name calling. If not, welcome to my world!!

I'm saying I'm not a "typical RDI"...that's as ridiculous as "typical Catholic", "typical American" or "typical non-smoker"...

As you have seen in many of my posts, I work only with what is known.
I'm not running with theories based on ideas I might have, I certainly don't project my own opinions or feelings onto the players in this crime. I'm not big on 'guess work' or 'hunches'.

I believe someone from the Ramsey family committed the crime, but I'm not going to tell you how or why.

SBTC is meaningless because I'm looking at it in the context of the entire ransom note.
On its own, sure, maybe it would be worth investigating, but given the facts surrounding the note, the content, the hand writing etc, it isn't worth trying to work out.

It's a bit like receiving a letter FROM the Easter Bunny and then trying to decipher his signature. It's not something that's going to lead somewhere helpful.

Yep, well, that's your call. Good luck with it.

John finished training at Subic Bay Training Center....that would be my guess as to where SBTC came from. That makes more sense than "Sorry 'bout that Chief". Which just makes me shake my head and say..."What the....."?

Ohhh yeah...and before you ask me for a source...just Google it...John Ramsey Subic Bay Training Center. Here is just one of many that I found...from a credible source...CNN.
http://articles.cnn.com/1997-01-24/...amples-boulder-officials-john-ramsey?_s=PM:US

<<snipped for length>>

"People asked by police to give handwriting samples were told to write the acronym SBTC, believed to be a reference to the nowdefunct U.S. naval training center at Subic Bay in the Philippines, the Rocky Mountain News quoted unidentified sources as saying. John Ramsey was assigned to the Navy Public Works Center at Subic Bay during 196869, according to the Bureau of Navy Personnel in Washington."

--------------------------------------------

John was assigned there from 1968-1969.

Yeah, I read it was LHP that thought of that (no source, sorry).

what I think is most interesting about the "ruthless people" movie plot and the JonBenet case is how SamStone WANTShis wife dead,he does anything he can to make sure she gets killed by the kidnapper....isn't it strange how the R's also did everything the RN told them NOT to do?
