When I was in high school, in our school library, we had a book written about Juliane Koepcke's experience that I read and reread. So I knew survival was theoretically possible, but even I thought there was virtually no chance these kids would make it after this long. I know that their recovery is going to be slow and precarious, but thank goodness, they made it this far.

All the news articles I'd read said they were four boys.

Actually the eldest, 13 was a girl. I had wondered when they released the name, Lesly.

Officials praised the courage of eldest of the children, a 13-year-old girl, who they said had some knowledge of how to survive in the rainforest and led the children through the ordeal.

Family members, Colombian President Gustavo Petro as well as government and military officials met the children Saturday at the hospital in Bogota, the capital.

Defence Minister Iván Velásquez told reporters the children were being rehydrated and cannot eat food yet.

"But in general, the condition of the children is acceptable," Mr Velásquez said.

General Pedro Sanchez, who was in charge of the rescue efforts, said the children were found five kilometres away from the crash site in a small forest clearing.

The children told officials that, while still lost they spent some time with one of the rescue dogs, but it then went missing.

The military was still looking for the dog, a Belgian Shepherd named Wilson, as of Saturday.

Just a quick update...

The children are said to be physically and mental stable. Particularly the oldest two who are very keen to talk about their experience. The baby is of most concern. All being evaluated. Will probably remain un hospital for approx 3 weeks.

Father and grandparents are with them. The father is the parent of the youngest two. I havent read or seen anything about the father of the two oldest children.

The héroe rescue dog Wilson is missing and being sought. Military say they will not give up on him.

The head of the child protection agency says Lesly told her the dog was with the children.

Petro visited the children in hospital this morning. The military hospital has a very good reputation. Health care is very good, at least in the major cities.

Seems likely that the children salvaged things from the plane, such as clothes, nappies and fariña (dried and crushed manioc, nutritious and filling).

At the very least, they would have had access to water.

But still an incredible exercise in survival!

I hope they find the dog!!!!!

I really hope she doesn't feel responsible for her death. She kept her siblings alive, including an infant, for well over a month, and that is astounding. But if she'd saved nobody but herself, it still would have been incredible.

After 40 days lost in the Amazon jungle, the Colombian Army confirmed that a search and rescue party have found alive the four missing children of a plane crash.

A custody battle has broken out among relatives of the four Indigenous Colombian children who survived a plane crash and 40 days alone in the Amazon rainforest, with the father of two of them facing accusations of domestic violence.

Astrid Cáceres, head of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, said in an interview with BLU radio that a caseworker was assigned to the children at the request of their maternal grandparents, who are vying for custody with the father of the two youngest.

“We are going to talk, investigate, learn a little about the situation,” Cáceres said, adding that the agency has not ruled out that they and their mother may have experienced domestic abuse.

On Sunday, grandfather Narciso Mucutuy, accused Manuel Ranoque, the children’s father, of domestic abuse against their mother, Magdalena Mucuty, telling reporters the children would hide in the forest when fighting broke out between the pair.

Ranoque acknowledged to reporters that there had been trouble at home, but he characterised it as a private family matter and not “gossip for the world”.

Asked whether he had attacked his wife, Ranoque said: “Verbally, sometimes, yes. Physically, very little. We had more verbal fights.”

Ranoque said he has not been allowed to see the two oldest children, of whom he is not the biological father. The Institute of Family Welfare declined to comment on why that was the case.

For the first time since they were miraculously rescued from the Colombian jungle after 40 days, four indigenous children are pictured in the hospital, on the mend, playing with stuffed animals and drawing with crayons.

Exclusive photos show the siblings, Lesly, 13, Soleiny, nine, Tien Noriel, four, and baby Cristin, one, safe in their hospital beds at a military hospital in Bogota, Colombia.

Lesly and Soleiny Mucutuy have made touching colored drawings of Wilson the Belgian Shepherd rescue dog who went missing during the mission to save them.

The siblings created the drawings with crayons as their contribution to the continued hunt for the lost canine who played a key role in finding them following the aircraft crash on May 1 that killed the children's mother, pilot and indigenous leader – and left them stranded for more than a month.

Hi, I posted before that only the two youngest were Manuel's children.


As regards your comment about domestic violence within indigenous groups its is in ME and MO totally condemned. And not only by them. We know that the region is currently overwhelmed by dissident groups, including FARC.

Manuel had been forced to leave the community several months ago. We don´t why. But what we do know (if I may) is that these dissident groups operating in the area impose a rule of law upon the communities and remove those dealing in drugs, anti social behaviour. For the moment Manuel claims he is being sought by dissidents, authorities especialy child protection agency are protecting the children.

The children were Huitoto following paternal line. They have to mix clans. The mother was Muinane. All from Puerto Arturo region, near to Aracurara.

We have not heard anything from father of eldest two girls.
