Reno, NV...

A man in Washoe County has tested positive for the coronavirus and Huffaker Elementary School will be closed on Friday out of an abundance of caution, the Washoe County Health District confirmed late Thursday.

In a statement, the health district said the man has a family member who is a student at Huffaker Elementary School in Reno

The man affected is in his 50s and is linked to the Grand Princess cruise ship outbreak. He is in stable condition and is self isolating at home, the health district said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are still working to confirm the case.

3 more passengers from the Grand Princess cruise in February have coronavirus

#PlacerCounty Public health confirms 3 new #COVID19 cases, all with ties to cruise ship: Placer County Public health confirms 3 new COVID-19 cases, all with ties to cruise ship | Placer County, CA Going forward, updated case numbers will be posted to Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 | Placer County, CA on a regular basis. The cruise had a sick patients, was quarantined in Japan, did not sanitize the ship, loaded up a few thousand new passengers and now it's another quarantined death ship. There's no question that profit is more important than the safety of passengers.

So coming up just in my tiny universe, already scheduled and some paid for : a Broadway show, a pro basketball game, a trip on NJ Transit train to visit my daughter and grandson (and spending the week in the NYC area), my niece's very large wedding, my (step) granddaughter's college graduation, and about 30 scheduled substitute jobs at a high school. Oh, and a trip to Disney World in the fall, with my mom and brother. DH and I already cancelled a cruise.

I know I'm not alone in this - having lots of fun things and obligations planned in the near future. I could just cry thinking about this mess and the decisions that have to be made on short term and long term basis. I'm so torn. And sad.
I appreciate the people trying to warn people to stay home over 60, but if I'm in good health at the time, I can't stay home until this goes away, or something else takes it's place. Maybe if I were young I could skip a year out of my life. It seems like some of your events are going to be special and can't ever be done again. I'm going to keep my plans for the year. Also, stress will play a part in your continued health. If putting your life on hold makes you sad, maybe you can compromise on doing the highlights of your year.

Just MOO, only MOO.

I’m no statistician and definitely not good at maths, but looking at
Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS only 50% of confirmed cases have recovered so far?

I hadn't noticed that, but you're right. This virus has been circulating for months and of 101,000 sick people, 56,000 are recovered. We also hear about people who are recovered and then get sick again, so that number might also be inaccurate.

50% recovery rate after such a long illness doesn't sound good.

My favourite headline from yesterday’s UK news was, “Britons ignore Boris and carry on panic buying.”

Lots of reasons for this, of course. One of them being that people are aware that official advice errs on under-playing the whole situation around this virus.

Why is anti bacterial stuff sold out? It’s a virus.

1. People don't know the difference between bacteria and virus.
2. It's soap and people want it.

Can Hand Sanitizer Actually Kill the Coronavirus?

There's a solid amount of research backing up the fact that hand sanitizer can kill some viruses, and it definitely has a place in coronavirus prevention, says Kathleen Winston, Ph.D., R.N., dean of nursing at the University of Phoenix. In a study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, hand sanitizer was effective in killing another type of coronavirus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, among other viruses. Wow. That's going to upset a LOT of people's apple cart!!!
I'm really wondering about the food show I'm scheduled to attend this Wednesday.
Also, it's basically a HUGE buffet. Could I attend and not taste? This isn't like a Costco tasting, these are from top of the line professional chefs, farmers, wine and beer makers.

Panic shoppers line up around the block for hours amid coronavirus fears as stores are forced to tighten rationing of disinfectant wipes and toilet paper

Hundreds of anxious customers lined up for hours outside a Costco in Burbank, California on Friday morning as they waited for the outlet to open its doors.

Stunning photos revealed that the line to enter the store stretched the entire length of the parking lot.

There is a toilet paper shortage in the U.K too. You can’t get antibacterial soap or wipes anywhere.

What's with the water and toilet paper. I just don't get it. Everyone's afraid of the virus so they line up together to buy odd stuff.

IMO....its not specifically the virus they are afraid of. It's the shutting down of services and goods that might come in an area where the virus if feared to be.

Different ship. The Diamond Princess that was quarantined in Japan is not currently in service and will undergo a deep cleaning. The recent cases in the US are from the Grand Princess.

That sounds good.

But I hope people remember that plain soap is a good thing! Just use it, whatever kind you like. No panic to get a specific kind, imo, is worth it.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/covid-19-2-strains-1.5487672
''Viruses naturally evolve by gathering mutations, gaining the ability to pass more easily between people or becoming deadlier. That's why scientists are watching closely to track how COVID-19 changes.

Scientific sleuths look at the genetic sequence of a virus like a fingerprint at a crime scene. They're focused on finding sudden changes in the sequence over time — a mutation.

This week, Chinese researchers analyzed 103 publicly available genomes from infected patients in several countries.

The results suggest the virus isn't mutating into a more dangerous version. In fact, it's possible newer mutations are making the virus less deadly.

The results from the team at Peking University point to two strains: a more aggressive one that originated with the first cases in Wuhan, China and another, less aggressive type.

About 70 per cent of the patient samples were from the more aggressive type of SARS-Co-V, the virus that causes COVID-19. ''

IDK....for all of our criticism of Japan's actions, or lack of, our country might do the same thing.....
