It took me a while to figure out what you were saying. I don't really feel that way about my own feelings...I hope I haven't been perceived as saying "nothing's going to happen" type thing. I haven't purposely tried to say anything about my longer-term predictions for how the virus might play out.

My main point has been to keep it in perspective and not to feel too much fear and panic, and also that even now there's more chance that a cough and fever are going to be caused by flu. It does appear that at some point that's going to switch to being the other way around, and it will be more likely to be Covid-19 than the flu.

I also hoped it wouldn't be this way. Earlier on I hoped it could be contained as SARS was, but that's looked unlikely for weeks. Now my hope is that people won't panic and live in fear through this, that governments will be able to introduce measures to mitigate, actions that can reduce the peak, support healthcare services to help as many people as possible, and to support the groups who are highest risk for serious/severe illness from this virus.

As they keep saying, most people are still likely to have something between a cold and a bad flu that you can deal with at home. Some people will experience a more severe illness, and some people are at what I consider a substantial risk of dying (even though most of the 80 yr olds in the study do survive!). I hope that as people, communities, and societies, we can do our best to support each other through this, and especially those higher-risk groups, but also those with loved ones who end up in hospital, and those who suffer financial difficulties.

I guess with the modeling in the post I just made above, that's a good thing that most countries do have some weeks before they get close to the peak, and that time can be used to try and do more to get hospitals ready for that peak.

Societal panic and being afraid of each other as if each individual we meet is the black death itself isn't going to help. So I will still say that we need balance in our reactions and responses as this goes on around us.

Awesome post - eloquently stated - and I completely share your hopes in regards to how we proceed.

Today’s stories are about COVID-19, tomorrow’s stories will be about how we, as a global society, respond to the adversity.

I hope you didn’t read too much into my post. I’ve had the upmost respect for everything you’ve posted, and have admired your continued optimism. My comment was specific to containment, and I had truly hoped that your viewpoint would prevail.

You and I are definitely of the same mindset in regards to societal fear and panic. Humanity will be tested, may we rise to the occasion...

MOO......

US CORONA-TESTING IS 'NOT CURRENTLY ADEQUATE' EXPERT TELLS CONGRESS

Senior director of infection prevention for the Johns Hopkins Health System and an epidemiologist, Dr. Lisa Maragakis, told Congress that the United States “desperately” needs more tests to screen for coronavirus.

She said: “Testing capacity is not currently adequate, and we need more.

“We need this as soon as we can have it.”

Press conference...a few points:

All public health departments are able to test. About 2 million tests will be sent out through the weekend.

Two of the largest commercial labs will have tests available by Monday.

Any American who is symptomatic and believes is exposed will have access through doctor to test through state labs.

Businesses are being sensitive to lost wages. In talks with Congress about it being more widespread.

When can any American who wants it get a test: All state labs can perform tests...over a million with more to come...will meet the need of public. Prioritized areas with community transmission and wider later.

Should major events be canceled to keep older and compromised Americans? Elderly with Serious underlying health conditions are the most vulnerable to coronavirus. Difference between controlled high blood pressure and COPD. Should think carefully about travel.
Thank you sharing this valuable information ! I was distracted during the presser and missed a lot of it, appreciate your recap :)

Tired of sensationalizing on this thread.

President Trump on Friday slammed Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) as the state grapples with an outbreak of the coronavirus, calling him a "snake" for criticizing the administration's response to the disease.

Trump calls Inslee a 'snake' amid coronavirus outbreak in Washington state

Trump says he wants passengers to stay on cruise: "I don't need the numbers to double"

To recap what just happened at this Trump CDC press conference on coronavirus:

  • The president wore his re-election campaign hat and interrupted the event to ask a Fox News reporter if his town hall on the network had good ratings.
  • He attacked CNN.
  • He called the governor of Washington state, the epicenter of a major outbreak, a “snake” and “not a good governor”, and said he disagreed with his own vice president saying nice things about the governor while visiting the state.
  • Trump said he has not considered canceling his rallies and is not worried about risks.
  • He made false and exaggerated claims about the availability of coronavirus tests, ignoring the reality that his vice president has acknowledged, which is that there is a shortage among US healthcare providers right now.
  • He said he would prefer if people on the Grand Princess cruise remained on the ship so that US numbers would not go up.
  • He gloated about his “natural ability” to understand the epidemic.

OT Rant

I rarely post. I can’t even begin to count how many OT posts Ive read just on the Covid-19 threads. I don’t mind them at all. It’s a way for people to vent or bring levity to a serious situation. I try to put an OT at the beginning of my post if I think I’m going way off course. I saw the tornado mentioned before so I didn’t think I was that far off course of what you all were discuss

I don’t think it’s fair to have one side voiced and not the other in regards to political comments and I DO NOT want to alert on them even though I know that’s what I’m supposed to do, I understand the frustration. I have a little more trouble sitting on my hands. I can only sit so much and they go numb, but that’s my problem. LOL

Good day to all of you and stay safe!
I don't like them. Sorry, as I know they are trying to be cute, but I can't watch but a minute before bailing out. I hope they remain healthy, of course.

Nor can I.

I feel the same way too.

Well, they have recently lost my vote....

I am a teacher and I am sure it is going to be hitting school staff very soon. Also, in my school I have yet to see any measures from the school in warnings and safeguarding against this virus. I am 60, with allergies and mild COPD. This won’t be pleasant for me.

What worries me, are the children in Special Education, many of whom are medically fragile. A child with COVID19, could easily decimate the entire classroom of kids, or a special school, dedicated to the most severe children, could completely wipe out the school.

These are children, often with several physical conditions. Especially preemies, even in school, these children still have problems breathing, lung issues.

Shrug. Is there really anything that we can do to change the inevitable spread of this flu? I don't think so.

Going to take a walk and look at trees or something...to calm down.

Warning! Stupid question ahead!
I’m wondering how you would go about disinfecting your home once someone in it has recovered from coronavirus?
I know we can wipe down surfaces with bleach, etc, but you can’t get to ALL the germs 100%.
Confessions of a germaphobe.

Hire a company to deep/disinfect clean?
My South Korea package deliverd 1-1/2 weeks ago is still sitting on my front porch. My daughter tried to bring it in today and I threw it back outside. She thinks I'm silly....I don't care what she thinks. Lol

Spray it down with Lysol.

I felt lucky for the one large Great Value bottle I found today. There were two and three other people were looking. That was it. Zip. Be thankful for what I got. I did manage also to get the last bottle of 91% alcohol also.

“Anybody who wants a test can get a test,” Trump declared during a tour of the CDC’s laboratories in Atlanta. He swiftly revised the statement, saying moments later: “Anybody who right now and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test.”

Trump and CDC Director Insist Coronavirus Tests Are Working

. *eyeroll*
Not true according to my friend who is currently hospitalized in IN. The CDC declined to run the test.

Oh my gosh it's insane. He grasps nothing! I have been giving him the benefit of the doubt this whole time but it's clear he's not handling this rationally or in the best interest of the American people. I'm so disappointed to see how partisan this is turning out to be. This is not about a re-election campaign! This is a national crisis that needs clear thinking and strategic planning. Where can we find this?

Today was my second visit to the PT gym, and I made a point of looking around for sanitizing wipes to clean machines prior to and/or after use. There are huge buckets of them in strategic places around the facility. I wiped the "stepper" before and after I did my warmup and wiped my hands off, too. Haven't seen anyone there (staff or patients) wearing masks or gloves. I'm not taking anything into the facility besides my jacket, but if I ever need to use a locker, I will wipe off the combination pad.
I was at school today (I am a teacher) and I realized it is absolutely exhausting trying to keep you hands cleaned in such an environment. Due to past school shootings all doors are closed and locked, so you have to touch handles and keys all day long, and then you pass out work, and help students, and the you gather the papers, and grab your pen, then grade the assignments, then touch your computer mouse, use your keyboard to input your grades... It is scary. I cut all my nails off last weekend and took off the rings and my hands feel raw from washing and sanitizer, but a classroom with 30 students is indeed a challenge.
