Interesting story about the private company that makes Purell/Gojo based in Akron, OH and also the maze of different agencies that regulate or monitor the various sanitary products in the US.

The company states that “Purell...kills 99.99% of most common germs that can make you sick.” Sounds impressive, but note the phrase, “most common germs.” Does that include COVID-19? No one really knows.
The FDA stated: “...we are not aware of evidence demonstrating that the PURELL® Healthcare Advanced Hand Sanitizer products as formulated and labeled are generally recognized by qualified experts as safe and effective for use under the conditions suggested, recommended, or prescribed in their labeling.”
So does Purell do anything to prevent COVID-19? The active ingredient of Purell is really just 70% ethanol or ethyl alcohol. Experts generally agree that a solution containing in excess of 60% alcohol can be effective in some instances, like for wiping down a tray table on an airplane, and maybe as a hand sanitizer.
Actually, that distinction—surfaces versus hands—falls under the auspices of the EPA, in terms of the former, and the FDA for the latter, as the GOJO Q and A reflects. Check this out: “...under the EPA’s Emerging Pathogen guidance, our PURELL® Surface Spray can be used to kill COVID-19 on hard, non-porous surfaces when used in accordance with the directions and a 1-minute contact time.” But it goes on to say, “The FDA, which regulates hand sanitizer, and the EPA, which regulates surface disinfectants, have different rules. The EPA permits manufacturers to answer questions about efficacy against viruses.”
Tanya Crum, an assistant professor of biology at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois says that soap and water is always best, but that “if you’re somewhere where soap and water is not available, having hand sanitizer is great. I wouldn’t use it first, I would use it just in case or second.” Crum also says that “There’s varying effectiveness in terms of hand sanitizer killing viruses,” but that’s because COVID-19 is a virus with a capsid protein or what’s called a coat, it may be easier to kill with a hand sanitizer. Potentially good news there for Purell.
Purell’s humble beginnings
GOJO has an all-American backstory. The company was founded in 1946 by Goldie and Jerry Lippman (and is still controlled and run in part by family members). Goldie and Jerry worked in tire and aircraft factories in Ohio during World War II. They found they had a hard time washing tar and other greasy stuff off their hands after work, and so the couple worked with a chemist at Kent State to develop a hand cleaner. (The first product was “GoGo, Goldie's nickname, but another company had already used the name, so the founders came up with GOJO, with the "G" standing for Goldie and the "J" standing for Jerry,” according to company history.)

Cases in Italy rise by more than 1,000 in 24 hours
More than 1,200 extra cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Italy since Friday, the Civil Protection Agency said.
The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Italy has risen to 5,883 from 4,636 on Friday, according to official figures. That’s a rise of 1,247, showing that contagion shows no sign of slowing down.
The death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in Italy slowed down on Saturday but rose to 233 from 197 on Friday.
The head of the agency, Angelo Borrelli, said in a news conference said of those originally infected, 589 had fully recovered while 567 were being treated in intensive care.

One thing I noticed for how they estimate numbers of infected and deceased in pandemics is that after the pandemic is over, they can compare the overall deaths for that period with the usual average number of deaths for an equivalent period of time, and that gives a figure of 'excess mortality', and those can be ascribed to the pandemic.
I imagine that the estimate for overall numbers infected comes from the type of studies that have already come out that show approximately the percentage of patients diagnosed to the percentage of those who end up needing critical care or go onto die, and then you can eventually work back from those figures, and say that if on average 10% of the population who gets diagnosed and into hospital goes on to die, and you know you've got 100 dead (either from confirmed figures or excess mortality, then that means a total of about 1000 were infected.

“UPDATE (March 6, 6 p.m.): Two more cases of the new coronavirus have been reported in Fort Bend County, health officials said.
The patients, two women in their 60s, were exposed to the virus as part of a trip to Egypt, the same trip that all of the other area people diagnosed with the pneumonia-like disease made in February. The women are self-quarantined at home, one with mild symptoms and the other no longer symptomatic.”

“If a person has not been around anyone with COVID-19 or has not visited an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak area, they are not at risk.
Dr. Minter, Director of Fort Bend County Health & Human Services and Local Health Authority said, “we know the COVID-19 situation is evolving quickly and is concerning to our residents. We strongly encourage the community to heed travel alerts issued by the CDC and the State Department and to practice excellent personal hygiene habits. Remember that all of these cases are all travel-related and there is no evidence of community spread at this time.””

Many of us have followed him on Facebook on the threads. Paraphrasing here.
He did a long FB video discussing such today, and his name can be searched and is open on Facebook to view.
He is at home in Utah now, and talked about all the resources for someone that didn't need to be in a hospital and that were so $$$ and so option was to come home. He pleaded his case to docs/CDC as the guy (in January) in Washington that was positive at one point was allowed to home quarantine (note the guy in Utah, his wife was treated in China and is now in house also). Health dept. agreed to his request finally.
Soooooo, this all happened yesterday, he drove in ambulance in gurney 300 miles from Salt Lake hospital to St. George and arrived after 3 am. He lives in community with lots of older folks, he is not worried about neighbors and they are all nice he said. He said he is confined by court order to not leave house, his wife will not go out except on her bike (she is "recovered" after China hospital stay). SW is in charge of monitoring, another department will be in charge of taking more tests on him on Monday and Thursday until he gets two negatives (he's awaiting two previous tests also). They will both isolate afterwards.
Family of #Coronavirus victim: "We as a family have lost a truly loving and wonderful person and are trying to come to terms with this. He was 83-years-old and a wonderful husband, dad, grandad and great-grandad who would go to any lengths to support and protect his family.

New one today, focus again is on COVID-19. Still no videos from Dr. Sc.. at Medcram. He's still AWOL.
Check out native bees versus honey bees which are an imported domestic agricultural animal. Most of the native bees that are on endangered list are native to Hawaii but I believe there is one continental North American bee on the list whose name escapes me at the moment. Plant flowers native to your area to save your native bees.
While We Worry About Honeybees, Other Pollinators Are Disappearing
About to go to small town grocery for routine weekly shop. Will be interesting to see what they are short on if anything. I prefer this store because it’s never packed and everyone is good about staying to their sides of the aisle.
ETA: Rusty Patch Bumblebee. That was going to bother me.
