60 is not even an age at which most people can retire. Who is going to pay all these older adults who are not retired to stay home? What is the point of giving advice that is not realistic?

well, you take a gamble going out in public esp. in hot spots. I wouldn't if it meant I could contract a virus and die.

Yes. We need mass education and policies on covering our mouths and noses and staying home when sick.

I thought we were raised to do so? My mother was very strict about hygiene and raised me NOT to make others ill, so stay when sick not go to school, work or social functions endangering others.
Sesame Street, all the kids shows covered it ad nauseam.

I have two holidays booked this year, Malta in June and Croatia in September. I'm just about to look for travel insurance but I'm not too sure what I should be looking for re all this and getting myself covered ;)
Has anybody else got travel insurance which would cover this?
I will report back as I'm sure lots of us have holidays booked.

Well too bad for them. How much effort does it take to learn the facts? To apply logic and reason to decision making? I have no patience, absolutely no patience nor sympathy for those who refuse to accept reality.

amen.
It's easier to research and listen to experts in this field due to the internet now.
So happy we have access to so much information instantaneously!

Yes. But what people don’t seem to realize is these are numbers in addition to the flu and other illnesses that cause hospitalizations and deaths.

So the impact to our population and medical systems is going to be huge.

And listen, I was one on here early on saying “we have many more deaths from the flu. I think there’s too much hysteria about this.” But now that it’s clearly a pandemic and not as limited as SARS, I realize the seriousness.
I am not an alarmist by nature.
That said, we only need know and see what's happened in other countries.
We are headed for it.
IMO,this is just the beginning.
Thanks to all active in keeping this thread updated.
MOO.

A lot of employers put immense pressure on people to not call in sick, from requiring doctor's notes to disciplinary actions.

I heard that airline air is supposed to be heavily filtered and sanitized.
TripSavvy
yes, they've been saying that for years but I know too many people that have picked up things on flights. I personally don't believe the
filtering is all that good.

DH and I don't usually insure our flights (unless they're included in a vacation package), but we always purchase travel insurance for a cruise or land package at the time of booking. "Cancel for any reason" policies can be expensive, so you'll have to weigh your options if you don't have insurance. I can't speak to purchasing trip insurance on a previously-booked vacation because we've never done that. If you used a travel agent to book your trips, he/she can surely help you decide how best to proceed.

Agree. I sadly and finally decide to skip the Philly Flower Show this weekend. I'll look at the crocus and (almost blooming) daffodils in my yard instead.

Not much my friend....I'm quite devastated about this topic. If I can help with info, maybe we can influence people to stay home and isolate.
@Henry2326 , My thoughts are with you and your parents. You are a blessing to WS and this thread. Be good to yourself....we need you!

This is interesting, given a few comments on here the other day about beards. Apparently some staff are failing 'fit tests' for the N95 type masks as they can't get a tight fit against the skin when someone has a big beard, and they're considering asking ambulance staff to shave in order to make the masks better protection for them/and the patients they carry in the ambulances.

Ambulance chiefs consider virus facial hair ban

Not any more. DH and I cancelled a cruise (for May) and skipped our annual Clearwater (FL) baseball spring training excursion.

I have a Shore house (small condo) a block from the beach at the Jersey Shore and that may be my go-to vacation spot entirely for now. Or maybe camping, where we can isolate ourselves in the Rv.

Did my weekly shopping today. Shelves were full. Public behavior was normal. The only difference I noticed today is that more people were cleaning their carts with wipes when entering the stores and hand sanitizer was available at all check out lanes. I went to Kroger, Walmart and Aldi and as far as I could see, I was the only one who used the hand sanitizer.

Massachusetts is now the 4th US state to mandate waiving all insurance copay/deductibles for #COVID19 testing! Great job leaders of MA to help promoting testing and make it available for all to help stop the epidemic!
Eric Feigl-Ding on Twitter

Yesterday, the DOI issued a bulletin instructing insurers to waive all cost-sharing for coronavirus testing and treatment. Thank you to @Jo_Comerford, @MindyForMA, and our 59 colleagues for your support in making our state response to this outbreak equitable and collaborative. Eric Lesser on Twitter

I’m sure it’s difficult, if not nearly impossible, to determine when to issue such recommendations so that people take the advice seriously. As it is, even now, people in general aren’t taking this seriously at all from what I’m seeing in the community... and I live in San Antonio where a large number of evacuees were quarantined for weeks.

I work in health care with the elderly. Many still say things like “it’s just a bad flu”, “the flu kills a lot more”, “there’s no point in trying to avoid getting it”, and so on. I know several older adults (50-75+) who left on cruises as recently as yesterday. I know people who think it’s a fantastic time to plan a trip to France, Italy, Germany, etc “because tickets are super cheap!!”

Americans in general won’t stand for the drastic measures implemented in China to squash the spread of this virus, so we cannot realistically expect to see a flattening of our curve like what has been reported in China.

The general public doesn’t seem to understand, or want to understand, how crucial it is to slow the spread of this virus so as not to overwhelm our healthcare system.

It also baffles me when I see frustration over “we want answers!!” to things like “what is the incubation period” and “how long does it live outside the body” and “how is it transmitted”. It’s like it’s beyond comprehension that WE DON’T KNOW FOR SURE. There doesn’t have to be some giant conspiracy or complete lack of leadership or anything like that... we just don’t know the answers to a lot of these questions. It is maddeningly frustrating for scientists and doctors not to be able to give definitive answers, but it’s hugely unrealistic to expect definitive answers about a strain of this virus never seen in humans prior to December.

Yes! Agree with everything!

I'd take a look on the TripAdvisor forums for Malta and Croatia.

I know the TA Cruise forum has a very brisk discussion about cruise insurance.

I think the consensus there was that no company would insure for COVID-19

And (only to be prepared) check into insurance for repatriation of your remains....

Combination of SARS and AIDS

"Chinese doctors say autopsies of coronavirus victims suggest the deadly illness is “like a combination of SARS and AIDS” that can cause “irreversible” lung damage even if the patient recovers ... paper by Wuhan doctors published in the Journal of Forensic Medicine ...

“The influence of COVID-19 on the human body is like a combination of SARS and AIDS as it damages both the lungs and immune systems,” Peng Zhiyong, director of the intensive care unit of the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in Wuhan, told the Global Times.
...

Pulmonary fibrosis is permanent scarring of the lung tissue that can leave the patient chronically out of breath.
...

The paper did not say that all coronavirus patients will suffer permanent fibrosis.
...

It comes as a group of Chinese scientists warn that the virus has mutated into a more aggressive strain. In a new study published in the National Science Review, researchers suggested that after COVID-19 crossed into humans, the original strain evolved into a second type and both of these are now circulating."
