If they are enjoying nature and not exposing themselves to other humans, what is the problem?
I don't get that...
My friends daughter, husband and two sons are currently living in Germany. They traveled to the Lombardy area two weeks ago. They wrapped up the site seeing and headed back to Germany, even had several escape routes planned. Currently they are in their 8th day of self quarantine, mandated by the local government. Everyday, she posts of bike rides to the deserted park, pond fishing, and various other outside activities. I do understand being trapped inside for 8 days with a 15 yo ( already miserable about relocation) and and 11 yo, both boys, but really going out could be putting others at risk. Both have PHDs and are very active in world environmental causes. I just don't get it, folks are just not adhering to the self quarantine guidelines.

Random musing:

You know what this feels like? When I read this it felt like “Row Row Row Your Boat”...when someone starts the song, then after they sing that line, someone else starts singing “Row Row Row Your Boat...”, while the first person is on the line “Gently Down the Stream”. And so on and so on.
What! Are you drinking BDE's Primal Pleasure wine?

Trying to catch up. Can someone/anyone tell us why this outbreak is not officially called a pandemic?

Calling it a pandemic, which by definition it is, means admitting failure. The WHO is still claiming that it can be contained, but I don't think even they believe that.

These are the epidemic to pandemic phases. There's no doubt that we are at pandemic phase Current WHO phase of pandemic alert for Pandemic (H1N1) 2009

POST OF THE DAY from Mickey2942

"Some people feel more secure with 200 rolls of toilet paper, others feel that stockpiling ammo is their "toilet paper".
Trying to wrap my brain around this. Nope, can't do it.

As China reported no new cases outside of Hubei province, optimism is growing in Wuhan. According to CCTV, 11 out of 14 temporary hospitals built to take patients with milder conditions have now closed. The three remaining hospitals have about 100 patients in each.

Party secretary Chen Yixin said at a meeting on Sunday: “We cannot be blindly optimistic.. we must concentrate our efforts in wiping out [the virus] and at the same time plan ahead for the resumption of work and allow people to leave Wuhan orderly and in batches.”

Ok. Everyone clutch your pearls. I am not young. I went to see the Eagles in Houston last night. I thought it would be poorly attended. I was wrong. I was near thousands of people. Don Henley did mention he appreciated attendance and knew there were issues with it. It’s not that I don’t believe there is a serious pandemic - I felt the odds were in my favor - and not only were the tickets a fortune but the performance was amazing.

No pearl-clutching here. As concerned as I am about catching COVID-19, I would have done the same thing. I’ve seen a lot of bands in my time, but never the Eagles. They are certainly on my “bucket list” even though I wouldn’t want to kick the bucket after the concert. I’m glad it was amazing. Now stay well...please.

DH and I have dental appointments on Tuesday and then my 84 year old mom has a lab draw and a yearly health exam all in the next 2 weeks. I'm trying to figure out what to do.
Postpone all appointments. Really

Expect the same for America tomorrow.
We're not in the stock market.
We're in the small business, Mom and Pop restaurant business.
However, we're very aware of what happens when people feel like their losing their money.
They tighten their belts.
Restaurants, travel and more will take a hard hit.
That's Mr. Kali and Me... Again

Hong Kong has had its third Covid-19 death, a 76-year old woman who had an underlying health condition who had been diagnosed early this month, the Hospital Authority said on Sunday. Her husband has also been confirmed to have the virus. The two lived in Sham Shui Po in Kowloon.

Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection said on Sunday that it was investigating five new cases, bringing the total confirmed infections in the city to 115. Two of the five new cases are related to a tour group that travelled to India.

I know how you feel. I have an outpatient hospital appointment in a few weeks' time that I have been waiting months for (public health system) and am a bit worried about. I would like to get the all-clear. I'm torn between whether to cancel it and go to the back of the queue for another appointment or just go ahead with the test and hopefully have my mind put at rest when I get the result. I'm not too worried about possible infection from the clinician but the last time I went to that particular hospital I was in a tiny waiting room for several hours with other people coughing all over the place while we waited to be seen...
Postpone.

It’s not that I don’t believe there is a serious pandemic - I felt the odds were in my favor - and not only were the tickets a fortune but the performance was amazing. I’m back in my home state now (drove) and have given up on the scheduled cruise or any large gatherings any time in the near future. I’m stocked up on dog food and horse feed but not people food. I’m working on it. I do appreciate reading all your posts.
Did they sing Hotel Coronafornia? :p

Stay 6 feet from everyone to be on the safe side. Don't touch anyone. Don't touch any surfaces.
And I pointed out that 6 ft rule to two individuals who came to my door today. Actually I have note on my door that says "I can not come to the door right now." But more often than not it is ignored.

Just watched the Fairfax County, VA presser on the two cases. Both cases are related to Nile cruises, as are several in Maryland. The marine was stationed at Quantico, back to the US and sick 2 days later, around Feb. 17th, hospitalized 2 days ago. Fairfax Health Dept is working with the Department of Dense to obtain his contacts. The other is an elderly person, low exposure to others.

VA has 2 test kits, each doing approximately 150 each, more on order, hope they arrive next week.

Video of presser about half way down article....

Australian couple who caught coronavirus on the Diamond Princess cruise ship say they 'didn't feel a thing' and it just felt like having a sore throat

“Both have since recovered from the virus and said they didn't feel a thing.

'
I didn't feel any symptoms all the way through and it was a massive shock to find out just as we thought we were going to embark on a plane to Darwin,' Mr Tester told The Project.

He said it was tougher to get over the flu than it was to shake COVID-19.

Miss Celik said her only symptom was a sore throat.”

It is worrying that younger people could contract the virus and not know it whilst infecting older relatives and making them very ill.

I can give a bit of insight on why some folks are buying ammo...nothing to do with worrying that it will be scarce, but almost everything to do with prepping. In the prepping community, you 're taught, and rightly so, that there could come a time when those who did not prepare come to get stuff from those who did. Some scary scenarios are put out there of folks breaking into your house, coming at you with guns, etc. to get food or other commodities. That is why one of the tenants of prepping is you don't tell others you do it..that sets you up as a target.

I’ve figured it out... its your plumbing and you need to prevent and protect against any aerosol plumes....

:D

I took my dog to the trail but I had to pee. So I thought I’d brave the public restroom at the adjacent park. I went in and used it without touching ANYTHING. I left the door open. Then someone in the adjoining stall flushed and it was so forceful. I thought “Great. Now I have an aerosol plume from a bunch of people all over me.”

I still ran the dog. But I was scared to even wipe sweat off me or take a drink or use my chapstick or anything that could get germs embedded in my skin or in my mouth. I took a hot shower the moment I got home.

This thing has me paranoid. That’s the last time I’m using a public bathroom if I can help it even if I have to use a bush.

I'll give it a shot. Technically it meets the criteria, but the word causes fear because of history. So the WHO would like to see more community transmission before calling it. Also they think we can beat it back. People tend to give up with the word pandemic.
I've been told by some stubborn, hard-head, know-it-alls that they will begin to take this outbreak seriously when the prez says the P-word.
