Covid-19 death toll jumps 36% in Italy

The death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in Italy has jumped by 168 to 631, an increase of 36%, the Civil Protection Agency said on Tuesday, the largest rise in absolute numbers since the contagion came to light on 21 February, Reuters reports.

The total number of cases in Italy, the European country hardest hit by the virus in Europe, rose to 10,149 from a previous 9,172, an increase of 10.7%.

The head of the agency said that, of those originally infected, 1,004 had fully recovered compared to 724 the day before. Some 877 people were in intensive care against a previous 733.

Coronavirus live updates: number of deaths outside China passes 1,000 as Italy records highest one-day toll

This is very sad indeed. May they all Rest In Peace.
If previous stories about Italy choosing to treat the younger people, and telling the elderly to just stay home are true, this might be the result.

MOO

I'm long overdue for a mani/pedi and decided to bite the bullet and made an appointment for this afternoon. The nail salon is immaculate, and I'm sure they have taken every precaution to insure that clients are safe.

I have a long-standing appointment for a haircut and pedi this afternoon that I’m keeping. It’s a small salon and stations are far apart. I’m not worried and I don’t want my hardworking hair stylist to lose my money unless and until absolutely necessary. But I will have her cut my hair a little shorter so I can stretch my next appointment to 6 weeks instead of 4 or 5.

Just wanted to share this in case others are experiencing this too.

I have found I am going through a roller coaster set of emotions, where some days I am able to read the news updates and handle things in a more methodical mechanical way by listening, learning, and taking the small steps we can do which are often covered here.

Then on certain other days, I am not handling the news as well, and getting some high anxiety days where I have to take breaks and do like was suggested yesterday where I watch some regular entertainment TV (esp comedy) which is a nice break and seems to help on those days like that.

Its been one heck of a roller coaster of emotions for me.

Woman upset over COVID-19 check coughs on plane, gets tackled
''The last thing you’d want to do amid COVID-19 fears is cough on an airplane.

That didn’t stop a Chinese woman aboard a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok to Shanghai last Friday who reportedly coughed on a flight attendant on purpose during a check for the coronavirus.

In a video supposedly filmed by another passenger, the woman — decked out in white hat, top and face mask — reportedly became enraged after the plane she was on was held up for up to 10 hours after landing at Shanghai Pudong Airport for COVID-19 screening.

According to media outlet Newsflare, the irate woman on flight TG664 caused a scene and demanded to be let off the plane.''

''A few passengers stated the woman was told by plane staff she would have to wait. That’s when she vented her frustration by flailing her arms and coughing on a flight attendant.

The footage reportedly shows a flight attendant putting the woman in a headlock while screaming, “Come here! Help me put her down!” as he tried to pin her down.''

That was incredibly stupid of the passenger. But when I read the sentence BBM, I thought she was going to be euthanized. LOL

I was asking myself the same question..if I were to be sick or if DH became sick, do we stay home together? Do we stay in different parts of the house, away from each other? Neither of us would want to share it with the other.

There is info on CDC site about that. They encourage sleeping separately and using separate bathrooms if possible. I really suggest reading everything CDC says about everything. There is lots of info.

As countries around the world take increasingly drastic measures to slow the coronavirus outbreak, a new study has found the disease can travel twice as far as the official “safe distance” on public transport.

The research, completed by a team of Chinese government epidemiologists, found that a passenger – unaware that they had coronavirus – infected up to 13 other people travelling on the same bus in a matter of hours.

The virus that causes COVID-19 can linger in the air for at least 30 minutes and travel up to 4.5m – further than the distance people have been advised to keep from each other by health authorities around the world.

“It can be confirmed that in a closed environment with airconditioning, the transmission distance of the new coronavirus will exceed the commonly recognised safe distance,” the researchers wrote in a paper published in Practical Preventive Medicine last Friday.
How virus can spread through one bus
The researchers need to preach this from the mountain tops!!

I knew this would happen eventually! In my town we have none to purchase. After the next town over had a WMT employee diagnosed, they are all driving to my town, so WMT is strained, hopefully they will get extra trucks & be able to stock shelves.

I just returned from my local Kroger in Central KY. Still plenty of toilet paper/wipes available!

On a few shelves they have a sign limiting purchase of certain items to 5 per person; but that was mostly in the OTC cough/colds aisle and the liquid soap/hand sanitizer aisle. In the cough/cold aisle, there were a few empty slots for things like cough drops, but the overall impression was of "plenty."

Plenty of water/pasta/eggs/meats/frozen meals, etc.

I didn't check for hand sanitizer, but they were out of stock a few days ago.
Only saw 1 person with a mask. No signs of hoarding or panic purchasing at this Kroger. In fact, the parking lot (which always seem "full" for some reason) had plenty of empty spots.

Filled up the tank for under $2/gallon, too.
IMO

Take your temp. If over 100.4, stay home. Jmo

Serious questions. I have a sniffle myself and I cough at least once a day. Is paranoia setting in or should I worry enough to stay home? Today I'm subbing, like I often do, carrying my Lysol wipes and staying in the front of the classroom (large chemistry lab room). I hesitate every day over the right thing to do.

March Madness will go on as planned

NCAA President Mark Emmert says that neither the organization’s appointed coronavirus advisory panel nor the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “have advised against holding sporting events.”

Here's Emmert’s full statement:

“NCAA member schools and conferences make their own decisions regarding regular season and conference tournament play. As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly.”

The first games for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament are next Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio.

I believe lockdown of a city or region is inevitable in the US. The definitions I've seen could include:
All businesses closed other than grocery
All roads closed in and out
All public transit closed
No one enters or leaves without specific approval
Anyone know if this falls under State rights? Or would it needed to come ultimately from Federal government?

Why is #SEC the only federal agency that has been told to telecommute?
Federal gov't employs 360K people from MD, VA, DC. Now there is local transmission, those who can should #WorkFromHome
