.@NYCMayor in presser now: If you're going to have to use the subways, use them on off-hours. Avoid rush hour.
If you can telecommute, we'd prefer that right now.
If sick, stay home. "Take it seriously."

I am astounded at the selfishness of so many of my fellow humans that I’ve witnessed in the past week around me here. It’s quite something.

This country has a culture among many of “nobody is going to tell me what to do.” And they scoff at science and view those taking precautions as weak. I will sit on my hands but you know who they are.

But what does state of emergency actually mean? When Cynthiana , KY, declared a state of emergency, in the same presser they advised us to get out & about, support our local community.......yes, after their first confirmed case.

The Governor declares a State of Emergency when he/she believes a disaster has occurred or may be imminent that is severe enough to require State aid to supplement local resources in preventing or alleviating damages, loss, hardship or suffering.

This declaration authorizes the Governor to speed State agency assistance to communities in need. It enables him to make resources immediately available to rescue, evacuate, shelter, provide essential commodities (i.e., heating fuel, food etc.) and quell disturbances in affected localities. It may also position the State to seek federal assistance when the scope of the event exceeds the State's resources.

March Madness will go on as planned

NCAA President Mark Emmert says that neither the organization’s appointed coronavirus advisory panel nor the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “have advised against holding sporting events.”

Here's Emmert’s full statement:

“NCAA member schools and conferences make their own decisions regarding regular season and conference tournament play. As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly.”

The first games for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament are next Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio.

The Ivy League did cancel the rest of their basketball tournament season, however. Maybe partially because the Ivy League Schools are closing down themselves. No Ivy Madness this spring for men's or women's teams.

Waffle House worker in Georgia tests positive for coronavirus
Steve Lookner on Twitter

#BREAKING: A Waffle House associate at the location on Marietta Hwy in #Canton tested positive for COVID-19. No other associates have shown symptoms. This is a developing story, stay with CBS46 for updates. CBS46 on Twitter

45 minutes away. Waffle House is NOT sanitary and there is no way that person didn't infect employees and people they are serving. I'm sure that employee worked until they couldn't work anymore. They weren't traveling in Italy. And they got if from someone else locally.

I thought by end of last week, every single person who wanted to get tested would be able to.

Well thats obviously not true.

These people just lie to our faces for what? not for our own good, only theirs

I don't believe the theory that in warmer weather this virus will go away, how do you explain the virus hitting Africa or the current summer weather in Australia?

I think that might be unclear at the moment. Most of the cases in countries that are currently sunnier/warmer are imported cases I believe it's more about whether or not the spread can happen as easily in those countries, the locally acquired cases and whether they seed an outbreak that gets larger over time or if it limits the size of those seeded outbreaks.

No visitors allowed at VA nursing homes during coronavirus outbreak

The US Department of Veterans Affairs is adopting a “no visitor” policy during the coronavirus outbreak.

This means "no outside visitors" will be allowed to see residents at any of the 134 VA-run nursing homes. These facilities are home to more than 41,000 veterans across the country.

The only exceptions to the no visitor rule will be in "compassionate cases" — when veterans in hospice units are in their last stages of life. "In those cases, visitors will be limited to a specific Veteran’s room only," the VA said.

The same “no visitor” policy will also be extended to the VA’s 24 major spinal cord injury and disorder centers.

Additionally, VA nursing homes will suspend new admissions and home staffers will be screened for coronavirus daily.

Declaring a "state of emergency" is simply a $$$ thing. Every state will do it at its first opportunity to get money from the federal govt.

I need a root canal, only appointment is in 2 weeks...tooth hurts, and it ain't getting better. What to do? Doesnt seem I have a choice

can't you call around to find an earlier app't? or do you have to go to that specific dentist for insurance reasons? dentists where I am will always get me in earlier if I'm in pain, even the walk-in clinics

  • #472
yes, I posted that but it was individuals, not the gov't. doing it.
Wonder if China will make the offer to help US?
Probably not.

China's done quite enough, imo.

“Chinese government has offered to send Italy 1000 lung ventilators, 2 million face masks, 20,000 protective suits and 50,000 test kits.”

Does this indicate that the Chinese government think they are over the worst .

Sure seems like it. That’s super good news.

Please! Please! Please! We have a few months til really warm weather, although spring temps have arrived a bit early in NJ. I am so so hopeful that something will slow this down, something other than human interaction. We need help!

I want to know how many deaths have been tested. Not sure how to word this. I don't want to minimize the confirmed deaths but could it be higher if those not diagnosed died before being tested?

I actually trust our dentists and their staff to maintain a safe environment for themselves and their patients. Dentists and their staff have to be careful because they are at high risk of catching stuff due to the nature of what they do. They were in the front lines during the initial days of HIV outbreaks, and a few of them caught it as a result. If I didn't want to wait in their lobby area, I would ask them to call me from my car (if that is an option for you.)

@Lilibet , how are you doing in your neck of the woods in Oregon? Self isolating yet?

Thanks for asking @Oregonmama! As far as I know, we haven’t expanded beyond the 2 travel-related cases in quarantine in our county. But that doesn’t mean it’s not out there in the community. I’m a bit of a homebody due to physical limitations. I canceled a doctor appointment yesterday because he has a crowded waiting room where you have to wait a long time. But I’m going to get a haircut and pedi today. I’m torn about things like meeting with my congregation (over 100 people), even though they’ve increased sanitizing. I stayed home and phoned in on Sunday. So I’m having trouble deciding what to do. But for the most part, I’m staying home because I really don’t trust individuals to take precautions, and it seems to be showing up in such random places across the country.

I think I need to get on my treadmill and release some anxiety! I hope all goes well with your college student coming home. :)

Yes! Of course people can get through it. Maybe most of us haven't had to do that before, if we don't live in blizzard places, but we can do it! And under most countries' quarantine zone rules, you can still go to the shop if you've run out of essentials, you can still go to the pharmacy, you can still get groceries delivered. People have survived worse than that!
I don't get it 2-4 weeks at home sounds like a vacay to me , I could find tons of stuff to be done that I keep putting off!!!
