OMG. This news for these prisoners is awful.

I don’t think that kind of behavior would be unique to China.

I fully expect there would be many USAnians who would refuse to obey precautions, should they be necessary.

Or more likely, vast numbers of quasi- homeopathic remedies promoted and sold on the internet: “ vitamins, plant extracts, essential oils” and the like

They are sick not on holiday so what does the son expect?
Well one would assume If he was that worried that he would be contracting the hospital they are in instead of moaning on the Internet as the hospital will be a lot more forthcoming in giving answers.

Just IMO of course

Empathy? Support? Compassion at his feeling of distress to not being able to fix the situation.

The first group of people quarantined in San Antonio over the coronavirus were released Thursday after 14 days.

The 90 evacuees at Lackland Air Force Base will now be allowed to go home, wherever that is in the United States.

The patients, who were evacuated from China's Hubei Province, "did not develop any symptoms, and now they're considered no risk."

One traveler tested positive for COVID-19 during the quarantine period laAnst week and was transferred to Methodist Texsan Hospital. Also on Thursday, the hospital announced the individual was treated and transferred to another medical facility "for ongoing evaluation." It did not identify the facility, and it did not identify the patient.

Lackland continued a quarantine for a second group of evacuees from the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked near Tokyo, Japan. They were flown from Japan to the U.S. in mid-February.
So, one story (doctor) says the virus can still be in the body, despite a person being released. Another story says the San Antonio quarantinees are being release (90 total) to go where they wish. What do we believe? Just wonderful to know this (not).

I thought there had already been reports that the patient is at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, not actually in SF.

Napa is only vaguely in the SF Bay area

A single case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Napa County, and is under isolation at Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

A second patient with symptoms is under investigation at the hospital. Neither patient is a resident of Napa County. The two patients arrived at the Queen of the Valley on Monday from Travis Air Force Base in Solano County. The patients were flown to Travis from Japan, where they had been under quarantine on the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

Among the cruise ship passengers flown to Travis AFB, seven were identified as needing testing or hospitalization. Five of the seven patients were sent to hospitals in Solano County.

Due to a limited number of isolation beds in Solano County, two patients were transferred to Queen of the Valley.

Empathy? Support? Compassion at his feeling of distress to not being able to fix the situation.

My family member was just diagnosed as terminal and just has gone into hospice. All I want right now is empathy and support.. and I've been reaching out to folks I know that can share empathy and support to prop me up as I'm just an emotional WRECK that I am not there and cannot "fix it" . (and burying my grief here by researching/posting here and isolating myself)

That said, I guess I'm just projecting my needs and not what most others here are seeing when they view their son in such distress. I see it clear as day and right now tears are running down my face even having to type this.

That's what is great about this site. So many folks carrying baggage to see through their own eyes to make their own opinions, yet respect how others may not share the same.

I've got empathy, support and my heart hurts for them, yet I do understand and respect that others may not understand what he expects.

I just find turning to the media with a agenda which all the family have done is pathetic. I am still waiting for Mr Abels apology to Japan for accusing them of falsifying his test results. I somehow doubt he will do that though.

Everybody copes in their own way and I Am sorry for your pain but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with the Abel family. They have shown a clear agenda against Japan and how they have been dealt with.

IMO

US changes the way it counts coronavirus cases

The US CDC will now track confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the United States in two separate and distinct groups:

those repatriated by the US Department of State, and
those identified by the US public health network

What this means: By these new metrics, there are now 21 confirmed cases among repatriated Americans and 13 confirmed cases among Americans first identified on US soil.

18 cases have been confirmed among passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship now back in the United States.

3 cases have been confirmed among passengers from the Wuhan repatriation flights now back in the United States.

Up until yesterday, the CDC was reporting 15 confirmed cases in the United States. The reason that number has dropped to 13 is because two cases have moved into the case count of repatriated individuals.

The change in the counting system starts today.

Now I'm getting worried

CDC today:

US health officials prepare for coronavirus outbreak to become pandemic

U.S. health officials are preparing for the COVID-19 coronavirus to become a pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

“We’re not seeing community spread here in the United States, yet, but it’s very possible, even likely, that it may eventually happen,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call. “Our goal continues to be to slowing the introduction of the virus into the U.S. This buys us more time to prepare communities for more cases and possibly sustained spread.”

The CDC is working with state and local health departments “to ready our public health workforce to respond to local cases and the possibility this outbreak could become a pandemic,” she said, adding that the U.S. may need to institute stringent quarantine measures such as those currently in place in China where schools are closed to contain the spread.

“The day may come where we may need to implement such measures in this country,” she said.

Messonnier said that 319 Americans were evacuated this week from the Diamond Princess ship, which was quarantined in the port of Yokohama near Japan after an outbreak emerged onboard earlier this month. Despite the quarantine, which kept passengers confined to their cabins, the virus infected more than 600 passengers and crew, including some Americans who are being treated in Japan, Messonnier said.

“There are several Americans with COVID-19 who are hospitalized in Japan and who are seriously ill,” she said.

Of the 319 Americans brought back from Japan, Messonnier said 18 of them tested positive for COVID-19. She said it’s possible that some of those patients did not test positive before boarding the evacuation flights in Japan, but that they were “already incubating the disease.”

Northern Italy reports 16 coronavirus cases

An outbreak of coronavirus in northern Italy worsened on Friday, with officials announcing 14 confirmed cases in the wealthy region of Lombardy, while two cases were reported in the adjacent region of Veneto.

Just hours after revealing that six people had come down with the virus in the first known cases of local transmission in Italy, officials said a further eight had tested positive for the disease, including five health workers.

Separately, ANSA news agency said two people had been diagnosed as suffering from the highly contagious illness in Veneto, although it was not immediately clear if the cases were connected.

Schools, bars, and restaurants have also been closed "until at least Sunday" as a precaution in Codogno, a town of 15,800 people around 60 kilometres south-east of Milan.

Six Italian nationals have tested positive for the coronavirus in the city of Codogno, in the northern Lombardy region.

They are the first known cases of local transmission of the potentially deadly illness within the country.

There are unconfirmed reports in Italian media that up to 14 people in total have tested positive for the virus in Lombardy, and two further cases in the Veneto region, though six cases remain confirmed by authorities at the time of writing.

The first person confirmed to have contracted the virus was a 38-year-old man contracted the virus after meeting a friend who had recently returned from China.

The man, now being cared for in isolation in hospital, is said to be in a “very serious” condition.

Soon after, two more people tested positive for the virus – the initial patient's pregnant wife, and another man he had come into contact with.

Three more cases were confirmed on Friday afternoon, as health authorities in the town advised residents of Codogno and nearby Castiglione d'Adda to stay at home as a precaution and avoid all social contact.

Around 250 people are now reportedly being tested for the virus in the area.

The first patient had dinner in early February with a friend who had just come back from China.

Police have reconstructed the man's movements over the last four days and are trying to find anyone he or his wife may have been in contact with.

The friend with whom he dined, meanwhile, has been taken to Milan's Sacco Hospital, where he is being kept in isolation.

Only three states can test for coronavirus because of flawed kits

California, Nebraska and Illinois are the only U.S. states that can currently test for coronavirus.

The CDC last week said some of the testing kits sent to U.S. states and at least 30 countries produced “inconclusive” results due to a flawed component, and the CDC planned to send replacement materials to make the kits work. The CDC has increased testing capacity until new testing kits become available.

You suggest 'specialized containment rooms' built for the specific purpose of hosting Covid-19 patients... but do such things exist that governments could use, or would they have to be built very, very fast?

They could be built as temporary structures, but there is no way the US as a whole would be able to ramp up to actually build hospital rooms with the negative pressure and access requirements that would meet current building codes and licensing processes under the plethora of regulations, both by individual state and federal regulations.

It would require an emergency declaration by some arm of the Federal Government ( Dept of Health and Human Services, FEMA? )

I don’t have a lot of confidence that the bureaucrats currently in charge of these agencies would be able to act efficiently and without outside influence.

The efficiency of this virus in it’s spread is impresssive, even if these are people are asymptomatic or only carriers.

This tells us volumes about the true value of Herd Immunity

While this is in regards to “influenza” this document outlines preparedness for pandemic

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/pdf/pandemic-influenza-strategy-2005.pdf

Page 15

Individuals and Families

The critical role of individuals and families in controlling a pandemic cannot be overstated. Modeling of the transmission of influenza vividly illustrates the impact of one individual’s behavior on the spread of disease, by showing that an infection carried by one person can be transmitted to tens or hundreds of others. For this reason, individual action is perhaps the most important element of pandemic preparedness and response.
Education on pandemic preparedness for the population should begin before a pandemic, should be provided by all levels of government and the private sector, and should occur in the context of preventing the transmission of any infection, such as the annual influenza or the common cold. Responsibilities of the individual and families include:
• Taking precautions to prevent the spread of infection to others if an individual or a family member has symptoms of influenza.
• Being prepared to follow public health guidance that may include limitation of attendance at public gatherings and non- essential travel for several days or weeks.
• Keeping supplies of materials at home, as recommended by authorities, to support essential needs of the household for several days if necessary

Recovered coronavirus patients who have traces of COVID-19 in their bodies could infect others, doctor warns

RECOVERED CORONAVIRUS PATIENTS WHO HAVE TRACES OF COVID-19 IN THEIR BODIES COULD INFECT OTHERS, DOCTOR WARNS

...”Zhao Jianping, the head of a team tackling COVID-19 in Hubei province—the epicenter of the outbreak—said some patients who recovered from the infection had tests looking for organisms, such as a virus or bacteria, in the body.” ... “Zhao said throat and nose swabs of a couple in Canada who had recovered from COVID-19 also showed they were carrying traces of the virus.”

(We have already heard all the above what kind of irks me, is the following statement:

However, professor Mark Harris of the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Leeds, U.K. cautioned to Newsweek that he is not aware of any scientific publications showing evidence for virus in recovered patients.

"It is certainly possible but unlikely to be high levels or persist for a long period— otherwise they would continue to show symptoms. We need some solid scientific evidence before making any conclusions about this," he said.”

okay how the heck would he know this? We have experts from WHO/CDC /medical people on the frontlines, that continue to say “we don’t know”

and this is pretty NEW, there’s not been a whole lot of “scientific publications”.

I think way too many assumptions were made early on. I’m still not convinced that 14 day quarantines aren’t a bad assumption...
I’ve still not seen confirmed data regarding the maximum incubation period.

To date, South Korea has tested more than 16,000 of its residents for #Coronavirus and the country continues to identify new cases. This graph plots their cumulative testing volume over time and the number of coronavirus cases that they’ve identified, which are now accelerating.

Oh I absolutely agree.

lots of assumptions, bad data, incomplete information, maybe some god complex mixed in, with denial on top

I'd be curious to know if any Canadian passengers were tested during the flight and found to have the virus, as was with the US and Australia flights:

UPDATE 1-Flight carrying Canadian coronavirus evacuees from cruise ship in Japan lands - minister

A Canadian government-chartered flight carrying 129 Canadians ...

The cruise ... originally had roughly 3,700 passengers, 256 of which were Canadian.

47 Canadians tested positive for the coronavirus and were not permitted to board the flight. Canada said individuals who tested positive before the flight would remain in Japan for medical care.

256 Canadians on the ship
129 flown home
47 tested positive and have to stay in Japan

So where are the other 77 passengers?

BBM Good question JerseyGirl
It seems that some (healthy) passengers may have decided against getting on the Govt charter plane and were finding their own transportation back.
If they didn't know it before, they will find out once they arrive back in Canada, that they will also be quarantined for 14 days.

"Healthy Canadian passengers who choose to leave Japan by their own means will also face a mandatory up to 14-day quarantine period upon arrival in Canada, Health Minister Patty Hajdu said Thursday."

If people chose not to return home on the charter flight, GAC said they would have to finish the quarantine being run by health officials in Japan and follow local instructions.

"Canadians seeking to return to Canada by commercial means will be subject to the Quarantine Act upon their return, in line with a determination to be made by the Public Health Agency of Canada," the statement read, though it did not say exactly what that would mean for those who elect not to board the charter."

They all tested negative but were tested again once the plane landed at CFB Trenton (Canadian Forces Base Trenton, ON) at 2am this morning. Medics boarded the plane to test them again and deliver meals. Then they got off the plane and boarded buses to drive them to Cornwall, ON to the NAV Centre

What we know
Canada has 8 confirmed cases as of today plus 1 new presumptive case in BC

Ontario:3
BC: 5 plus 1 presumptive case: a female traveller recently returned form Iran)

455 have tested Negative

The first group quarantined on Feb 7, 300 citizens that were removed from Wuhan province, are due to be released from CFB Trenton soon, showing no signs of the virus
