Yes, this has been discussed. To catch you up, the test right now is ONLY being distributed to 11?? certain surveillance locations in the US before all can have. It's not for hospitals or such at this time.

This is an old CDC post when they first came out with the test for such. MOO Scary that this post is only 3 weeks old perhaps.. but it was announcement right after Feb 11th or so iirc.

Unfortunately the CDC site doesn't date their media posts, which is a PROBLEM IMHO as folks think is recent as you just did MOO

I think it’s only 3 states that have the proper testing capabilities at this time- California Nebraska and Illinois.
Only three US states can test for coronavirus, says public lab group

World is approaching coronavirus tipping point, experts say

The world is fast approaching a “tipping point” in the spread of the coronavirus, according to experts, who warn that the disease is outpacing efforts to contain it, after major outbreaks forced Italy and Iran to introduce stringent internal travel restrictions and South Korea’s president placed the country on red alert.

Anyone figure out the 35-50 patients “already diagnosed with CV” from Travis Air Force base?

I’m finding quite a few articles still quoting that court order, but no explanation as to why that number does not jive with the current US case total....

Well, there are really all sorts of “cruise ships” we live in:

1. Large multi-unit apartment building

2. Hotels, motels, condos

3. Airplanes, train, subways, buses, any shared transit

4. Public arenas, theaters, coliseums, nightclubs, restaurants, bars

5. Amusement parks ( I’ll betcha Disney has a plan!) , attractions, entertainment venues

6. Schools and universities, dorms

7. Shops,

It goes on and on. We aren’t self-reliant isolated farmers and small communities

True. I don’t know how to avoid a hotbed of germs. And I have no choice but to go to court. I mean anyone who works outside the home with the public is going to be exposed.

  • #1,466
I’m not to the point that I’m panicked yet. Our US government will restrict travel even more with hot spots in the world if needed. I can see in the near future that air travel will decrease between us and the countries that have large numbers of infection. I also expect there will be a better understanding of this disease and better treatment and possibly a vaccine. We just need to be practicing good hygiene for now.

MOO

It just blew up in Italy. I think it’s impossible to stop now.

They're not trained in medicine, so they're having to trust their bosses that whatever they're doing to protect themselves will work. Sad situation.
The infection specialist that went on the cruise ship, then posted a video on his impressions (it is since removed from viewing supposedly by him?) had tried to give helpful suggestions on how to improve the ship infection spread and how to guide the staff to be diligent. I remember he talked with a ship medical officer and said she had basically given up even not wearing a mask, he thought she was certain that she would be infected. Also, mentioned was the crew sitting next to each other at long tables eating, even when a crew member said they were unwell, they still had to share sleeping quarters with others. He said his suggestions were well received, yet a short time later, he was told to leave the ship by a Japan medical official.

While the exact source of the infections remains unclear, health officials have pointed to a 61-year-old female member of the sect who tested positive on 18 February. Local authorities are now scrambling to trace all 9,336 members of the church’s Daegu branch as well as visitors from out of town who may have come into contact with the woman.

A taxi driver, Kwang-ho Lee, wondered why the woman hadn’t done more to stop spreading the disease.

It’s ruining everyone here,” he said. “I’m making less than 10% of my normal income. The other drivers and I are just standing around, waiting all day. Sometimes we’re even too scared to talk to each other because we don’t know who has the virus and who might belong to that cult.”

'It's ruining everyone': eerie quiet reigns in coronavirus-hit South Korean city

I wonder how so many people are going to survive financially this virus could bankrupt them.

This virus could spark a worldwide depression. 9/11 impacted the airline industry and that had a domino effect to the global economy. This could be much bigger than that.

It might be that the 50 are counted in the cruise ship numbers. However, it does seem somewhat deceptive since they are now in the US and people want to know the numbers in the country - not the place of origin.

Gack... definitely getting real in South Korea

A reporter addresses this subject in the CDC teleconference and the State Department AND CDC both have an opportunity to briefly respond. This was an especially “intense” part of the conference, I thought. I thought Dr. Nancy handled the question quite gracefully. Worth a listen:

Yes, this is worthy of repeating, that if people decide to take the risk of cruising now to Asia, then possibly reap the consequences, not to exclude quarantine and getting stuck down there.

Noting to check if there are any Cruise-lines currently/still operating in Asia and their itineraries...

From the above link / BBM:

“U.S. District Judge Josephine Staton granted a temporary restraining order after the city of Costa Mesa filed a request for an injunction earlier in the day. Named as defendants were the Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the California Department of General Services. ( )

An expedited hearing is scheduled Monday in Santa Ana, California.“

I’ve been monitoring the Korea situation since the beginning via Airiyang News video broadcasts out of S. Korea on YT. Even before stuff really hit the fan there they had closed the schools. Will look for a link. Moo.

I think the Cruise industry must be trying to avoid freefall in their bookings. Especially on these billion-dollar megacruise ships that have something like 4,000 people on board. And the airline industry.

Then all those industries that supply fuel, food, supplies to those cruise and airline vendors. Then travel companies and outfitters. Downstream effects on those who depend on tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, rental cars, etc.

It will be interesting to see how the hearing turns out tomorrow (2 pm). If they are indeed blocked, then this will be a potential precedent of what could come (more protests and court motions).

ETA: In a video I saw last night about this (posted above), they mention the basis of the motion was the facility not being ideal for a highly contagious disease. This is important because this is EXACTLY what a medical expert said re: the new quarantine buildings that were built in Wuhan. There needs to be proper isolation areas, etc. I believe this was from Chen Q’s video when he talked to a specialist about this, moo.

Where is Chen Q (and Fang Bin)? We’ll see if he shows up after “24 Days”.

The 34 current US cases already includes the cruise ship passengers.

"We have 13 U.S. cases, versus 21 cases among people who were repatriated," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the U.S. National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a media briefing Friday. "The repatriated cases include 18 passengers from the Diamond Princess [cruise ship] and three from the Wuhan repatriation flights."

Well, even if there is no general quarantine, but the US is reporting sporadic, but widespread outbreaks, I think you will find many public gatherings will be cancelled:

Sporting events, esp at major arenas
Movie Theaters
Public Lectures
Political rallies ( no loss there, IHMO)
Church services
Concerts
Festivals ( summer concerts, Coachella, Lollapalloza, etc)
Parades ( think 4th of July)
Casinos
etc, etc

And then think of all the jobs and income lost for people who work to supply, attend, clean, reserve, house, decorate any of these major events

They also now have the full transcript from yesterday's CDC call in online (in addition to the audio file)

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/t0221-cdc-telebriefing-covid-19.htm

WHO daily press briefing transcript from yesterday is also now online

https://www.who.int/docs/default-so...ference-20feb2020-final.pdf?sfvrsn=3295d775_0

Dr. Nancy also said iirc that they update the “numbers” on their website on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and she hopes to have all kinds of stuff up on the CDC website ASAP.

WHO Pandemic Phases

Phase 5
is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region (Figure 4)23. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

FIGURE 4
WHO REGIONS. The boundaries and names shown and the designations used on this map do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the World Health Organization concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area of (more...)

Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way.

THE WHO PANDEMIC PHASES - Pandemic Influenza Preparedness and Response - NCBI Bookshelf

That corrects my thinking that I had before, thank you so much. I had thought 2 countries, not regions... So it needs to be in a different regions which are delineated on your map. Keep us all up to date on such please, and thank you.

Makes sense that.. was it last Wednesday?.. that WHO made up the 7 regional appointees for the crisis team.

For those who may be interested in what the day to day experience is like for Chinese citizens who are in the quarantine facilities ("cabin hospitals") that are set up in sports arenas and convention centers, here is a link to a diary with many pictures-- interesting even if one doesn't read mandarin. Pics of the food rations, medical stations, bunk/ toiletries issued to each admission, outside porta potties with many handwashing sinks, but apparently no showering/ bathing facilities. Etc. I think these facilities are also pretty chilly-- every single person is bundled up.

It's also pretty apparent in the pics that there is fondness and camaraderie between residents and the staff. I marvel at how tolerant the people are for these spartan conditions, but the Chinese people are stoic and resourceful, finding ways to endure situations that would be intolerable for many westerners.

确诊患者日记 | 在我宣布已战胜新冠病毒,嘚瑟了几天后。啪~脸真疼!

I have a friend in Beijing, and we use wechat. She is tending 2 elderly family members, and declined the opportunity to fly back to the U.S. in early January. As of yesterday, it has been 18 days since she left the apartment-- by her own choice. She is careful what to share on wechat so as not to attract attention of the censors, and is artificially upbeat in her anecdotes to camouflage info. Until end of January she was able to get to a hotel to use her VPN every few days, but her VPN became unusable end of January.
