Road blocks were set up in at least some of 10 towns in Lombardy at the epicenter of the outbreak, including in Casalpusterlengo, to keep people from leaving or arriving. Even trains transiting the area weren’t allowed to stop.

In Venice, buses, trains and other forms of public transport — including boats in Venice — were being disinfected. Museums were also ordered to shut down after Sunday in Venice, as well as in neighboring Lombardy, which, with at least 110 confirmed cases, is the epicenter of the viral outbreak.

Authorities said three people in Venice have tested positive for the viral disease known as COVID-19, all of them in their late 80s and who were hospitalized in critical condition.

Yes I was just reading exactly about that. I can’t remember where atm.

(Reminder to self, I still need to read your Mecca article)

I can’t keep up!

Okay, I was talking to my husband about the numbers and fatality rate.

Of the people on Diamond Princess cruise, what percentage of those passengers were over age 80?

How many of those people over age 80 caught the COVID19?

Of those folks over age 80, who caught the virus, how many of those folks died?

That actually gives you a much different perspective on the virus. And it is pretty grim, for over age 80 group.

Ok here’s where I’m at right now, at this moment, not to sound like an alarmist:

Imo there's a chance WHO and CDC will declare a Pandemic, perhaps as soon as tomorrow (maybe), if not in the coming days or weeks.

The minute the “P” word hits Facebook and Twitter it’s over. This is when we will really see the masses at the stores and the shortage of goods/bare shelves, when the “P word” hits social media and spreads like wildfire online.

Therefore, I’m going TODAY, right now, (which sucks because I have to get out of my comfie Sunday jammies), to go pick up a huge bag of dog food. It’s one of the last items on my list.

And after that I’m broke :D Too bad because I’d love some beer. Forgot about that!! Good thing I bought my supplies first or I’d have all beer and no supplies lol.

Anyway, regardless if a pandemic is ever declared or not, I have the peace of mind knowing I’ve got toilet paper and my other necessities and that I don’t have to leave the house this week or for the short term. I’m all about the “peace of mind”.

Of course if the situation escalates, what about the long term? Two weeks of “toilet paper” will only do so much.

Is today the “window of opportunity”?

I say call your pharmacies and see if you can get an extra month of meds. Last place you’ll want to be is a pharmacy if this breaks.

Everything is MOO as always.

ETA2: @Medstudies , I better stock up on weed too

I am trying to buy an extra supply of things that I know I will use eventually anyway. So things I suspect may be hard to get but that I need anyway like Advil, TP, dog food, vitamins, medicine, disposable rubber gloves, and N95 type masks, etc. Things I am reading about that China supposedly supplies a lot of and may be hard to get but I use these things anyway in the long run. So its not money really lost but money spent before I would normally have to spend it on these types of things because I am getting more of them now.

Like before the news of the virus outbreak, every summer I use masks when spraying noxious things like weed killer or even spray paint or when I do occasional wood working projects with saws and saw dust. I usually go through about 10 or more masks a year on average anyway. And for the disposable rubber gloves, I am always using them around the house anyway for cleaning up after my dog when she has an accident on the carpet or cleaning up anything else where I dont really want to touch it cause its nasty LOL.

My dog is trained to go outside but she once in awhile will get up in middle of night to sneak a pee while we are sleeping. LOL I am too kind to my animals to really discipline them and a loud voice only goes so far with training, so some of it is my own fault and I just clean up the messes if they happen. :) Its almost funny when you see my dog react to my loud voice. The look I get from my dog is like "yeah i know your threats are baseless so F off" :)

In Switzerland, which like Austria borders Italy, there was a call for calm. “The news from Italy is worrisome … but it is too early to think that a wave is rolling our way,” said Daniel Koch, the head of the department for contagious diseases at the heath office.

The German health ministry said it had initiated a phone conference for all European Union public health authorities about the outbreak in northern Italy on Monday.

French Health Minister Olivier Veran said that authorities were getting ready for a possible outbreak in France of the new virus, saying he was monitoring closely the “very serious” situation, including in neighboring Italy.

I read that most of the US toilet paper, paper towels, and Kleenex-type tissue supply comes from Wisconsin, so we don't have to worry about importing that from China!

I have my Amazon basket ready.
All I have to do is hit submit, but I'm noticing that some of the items on my list are selling out!
I might as well face it, I'm going to have to order them soon anyway, I might as well do it.
Eek!
MOO
I think it's a good idea to do it now. If Amazon is not getting shipments from China then all they have is what's in the storehouses. It's better to be prepared and have peace of mind than to be scrambling for things later!

That's what happened with my glasses. And I'm going to guess that the items will only ship in late March IF they arrive from China.....and that's a big IF!

Italy press conference today.....see in link with translation.....

Giuseppe Conte says cases of the the Covid-19 virus in Italy have risen dramatically in the past two days. The prime minister told a press conference Italy would not try to suspend the Schengen treaty as such a measure would be disproportionate.

Schools in Milan will be closed, however, and people will not be allowed in and out of affected areas. Social and sporting events in Lombardy and Veneto have also been cancelled. As of Sunday morning, there were 89 confirmed coronavirus cases in Lombardy – with two in its industrial centre, Milan – 16 in Veneto, three in Piedmont – including two in Turin – and two in Emilia-Romagna

What is the Schengen Treaty?
The Schengen Agreement is a treaty which led to the creation of Europe's Schengen Area, in which internal border checks have largely been abolished. It was signed on 14 June 1985, near the town of Schengen, Luxembourg, by five of the ten member states of the then European Economic Community.

Yeah, I was in the Boy Scouts, and the Motto we were trained in is "Be Prepared".

I think being in the Boy Scouts is one reason why I am one of the ones that are trying to reasonably prepare for things as much as reasonably makes sense anyway.

Yep. That’s why I’m selling a kidney right now as we speak. Because no way I’m going through a pandemic without weed or beer, I’m telling you guys that right now (and you wouldn’t want it either trust me! :D )

Epidemic Vs. Pandemic: What Exactly Is the Difference?
They're both pretty terrifying—here's what to know about each.

In the grand scheme of things, a pandemic is the highest possible level of disease, or a measure of how many people have gotten sick from a particular disease and how far it has spread—but before a common illness reaches pandemic proportions, it has to exceed a few other levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Sporadic: When a disease occurs infrequently and irregularly.
  • Endemic: A constant presence and/or usual prevalence of a disease or infection within a geographic area. (Hyperendemic, is a situation in which there are persistent, high levels of disease occurrence.)
  • Epidemic: A sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease—more than what's typically expected for the population in that area.
  • Pandemic: An epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, affecting a large number of people.
Epidemic Vs. Pandemic: What Exactly Is the Difference?

Well, it's definitely spread over several countries or continents.

Hello, I just lost a very long message. WS's must be extremely busy. Anyway, I am not trying to be stupid, but why are so many people dying? I get that there is nothing to treat the flu, but what about the pneumonia that people develop. Can't they treat that with antibiotics? My girlfriend just had pneumonia a few weeks ago, and she was better within days after antibiotics. I get people with comorbid conditions, but it seems that even children are dying. Do we know why, or am I just stupid and either haven't read enough or can't figure this out? Thanks for anyone who can help me out here.

I believe this is a very scary situation. I hope that somehow this contains, as I am sure all reading here do. BTW, have any of you guys run into friends/people in general who think we are overreacting? So many people I have spoken to hardly know what I am talking about and then look at me like I am crazy. What about you guys, do you run into people who are totally not paying attention? Thanks, Katt

Pneumonia can have different causes. If it's caused by a bacteria, then antibiotics can be very helpful. And the pneumonia caused by bacteria can occur after something like a bad cold or flu, but it's the bacteria getting into the lungs and causing the pneumonia, therefore antibiotics help.

With this one, it's the Covid-19 virus causing the pneumonia, not a bacteria. Antibiotics won't help a pneumonia that isn't caused by a bacteria.

Anyone who is eligible for the pneumonia vaccine would still be advised to have it now as it might be that a milder case of Covid-19 could set up the conditions to allow a bacteria into the lungs to then cause bacterial pneumonia. It could be a big deal to take that pneumonia vaccine now, just in case the units in hospitals become overwhelmed with covid-19 caused pneumonia, meaning that they have less time/nurses per patient, fewer ECMO machines per patient, etc.

I haven't yet heard of any children dying from Covid-19? So far the reports have been that infected children seem to be having much milder case. Obviously there are children out there who have illnesses like cancer or cystic fibrosis, etc, and they would presumably be higher risk for complications.

Hmm, so I wonder what the thinking is. That having coronavirus patients at Travis Air Force Base is safer for the citizens of CA because it’s an Airforce base? As opposed to people saying it’s unsafe for citizens of Alabama if they are there? Is an Airforce base just more private, or better quarantined than a separate building complex in Alabama or Costa Mesa County?

Or do people keep blocking efforts to move these people because of fears of transmission during the relocation process (like airplane, bus, train, etc)?

Air Canada has confirmed that a passenger aboard one of its flights from Montreal to Vancouver on Valentine's Day has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

The airline said health authorities confirmed the case on Feb. 22, more than a week after the flight. Air Canada says it's working with public health authorities and has taken "all recommended measure. The Montreal Airport Authority told CBC News that it had not been informed about the case by either Air Canada or B.C. public health authorities, but it also wouldn't expect to hear if they did not feel it was necessary at this stage.

The plane departed from Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport. The airport said it doesn't know how long the passenger may have been in the airport.
