If you consider that it sits on surfaces for 5 to 10 days also the 14-day quarantine was an early idea but has now changed to minimum 21 from what I heard from dr. John in the UK. I have also just heard that only three states in the United States have capabilities to even test for the Coronavirus. They have sent out faulty tests. By the time the tests are sent out how many people have it. 49 states don't have the test how would we know? Not fear mongering...dont b scared b prepared. JMO no truth out there yet on real numbers.

It means that they don't have testing capabilities in their own states, so they have to continue to send swabs to the CDC for testing, which has a longer turnaround than if they could do the tests in-state.

And those particular faulty tests, it's my understanding, were showing 'inconclusive' as opposed to giving faulty positives or negatives.

Why did our government not listen to the CDC??

The CDC is the expert, not government officials. CDC recommendations should have been followed.

A reporter addresses this subject in the CDC teleconference and the State Department AND CDC both have an opportunity to briefly respond. This was an especially “intense” part of the conference, I thought. I thought Dr. Nancy handled the question quite gracefully. Worth a listen:

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/t0221-cdc-telebriefing-covid-19.mp3

Several other Americans who were on board the ship have been diagnosed and hospitalized in Japan, according to the CDC. As of Friday afternoon, there were no plans to evacuate those patients. The U.S. Department of State said it will not rescue other Americans who choose to go on cruises in Asia.

Such repatriation flights do not reflect our standard practice, and should not be relied upon as an option for U.S. citizens," Ian Brownlee, an executive within the Department of State, said during a media briefing Friday.

On its website, the department has warned Americans to reconsider any planned cruises to or within Asia, saying such trips "may be impacted by travel restrictions affecting their itineraries or ability to disembark, or may be subject to quarantine procedures implemented by the local authorities."

U.S. takes steps to prepare for pandemic as global coronavirus cases rise

Yes, this is worthy of repeating, that if people decide to take the risk of cruising now to Asia, then possibly reap the consequences, not to exclude quarantine and getting stuck down there.

Noting to check if there are any Cruise-lines currently/still operating in Asia and their itineraries...

From the above link / BBM:

“U.S. District Judge Josephine Staton granted a temporary restraining order after the city of Costa Mesa filed a request for an injunction earlier in the day. Named as defendants were the Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the California Department of General Services. ( )

An expedited hearing is scheduled Monday in Santa Ana, California.“

Two Beijing hospitals quarantined amid fears coronavirus infections will spike in the capital
https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...rs-coronavirus-infections-will-spike-capital/
Feb. 21, 2020 at 10:03 a.m.

“Even the Global Times, a nationalist newspaper affiliated with the ruling Communist Party, described the increase in cases in Beijing this week as “whopping.””

[...]

“That, along with entirely unconfirmed but persistent rumors in the capital that a senior member of the Communist Party has been infected, has led to speculation that the recent increase in security measures is designed to protect the nomenklatura.

The party is all but certain to decide Monday to postpone the important annual National People’s Congress meeting due to begin March 5 in the Great Hall of the People, across the road from Zhongnanhai.”

[...]

“Now, two hospitals are monitoring hundreds of people for potential infection after a sudden spike in cases.

Fuxing Hospital in the Xicheng district, and only a block away from an apartment complex that is home to many senior government officials, is under a total lockdown.

It reported 36 coronavirus cases Thursday, with eight medical workers and nine cleaning staff infected, as well as 19 patients or their relatives. A total of 668 people who had been in contact with the infected patients were placed under observation.”

Coronavirus clusters at Beijing hospitals ignite new fears
Spread of COVID-19 to capital comes as millions head back to work
FEBRUARY 21, 2020

“New confirmed cases have led to large-scale quarantines in at least two hospitals in downtown Beijing, with many potential contacts yet to be traced, according to a city government news briefing on Thursday.”

[...]

“The kidney patient underwent regular renal dialysis during while at the hospital, allowing her to come into contact with many patients and medical workers. The People's Hospital has discovered more than 250 people who may have had close contact with her, including nearly 150 patients and 100 staff. So far, laboratory tests have not turned up positive among these contacts, according to the briefing.

The incident reminded many of Beijing's painful battle against the 2003 SARS outbreak. The capital, with a population of 21.5 million people, was one of the cities hit hardest by the epidemic, with more than 100 deaths. The People's Hospital was among several institutions in Beijing that was quarantined due to widespread SARS infections.”

Coronavirus outbreak grows in northern Italy, 16 cases reported in one day
UPDATED FRI, FEB 21 2020
    • An outbreak of coronavirus in northern Italy worsened on Friday, with officials announcing 14 confirmed cases in Lombardy, while two cases were reported in the adjacent region of Veneto.
    • Just hours after revealing that six people had come down with the virus in the first known cases of local transmission in Italy, officials said a further eight had tested positive for the disease, including five health workers.

“Codogno Mayor Francesco Passerini issued a decree on Friday ordering the immediate closure of schools, municipal offices, stores selling food, bars, discos, and sports facilities.

About 80 venues will be affected. The order could last between 48 hours to five days.

Local authorities have advised residents to stay at home and avoid social activities as a precaution.

Discovery of the cases "has created a situation of alarm throughout the municipality," Passerini said.”

DuPont ramps up safety suit production as coronavirus causes shortages in China
FRI, FEB 21 2020

“At DuPont’s largest manufacturing facility in Richmond, Virginia, CNBC got an inside look at how the company is making changes to its operations to accommodate the rise in demand.

“It’s been really intense for us to build up production and make up a lot of products for the coronavirus, specifically,” said Stephanie Bernheisel, product engineer at DuPont.

Of the protective suits DuPont makes, the most popular is the white Tyvek suit, which costs anywhere between $5 to $15. The suit is thin and protects the body from many fluids, but does not cover the hands, feet or face. But it also makes heavy duty Hazmat suits that act as a shell around the entire body, and are often worn with an oxygen tank. Those suits can cost in many cases more than $1,000.

At the 500-acre factory in Richmond, heat and pressure are applied to the polyethylene fabric, it’s then flattened and rolled. The fabric is then sent to one of nine manufacturing facilities around the world where the final suit is made.”

Shadowy Church Is at Center of Coronavirus Outbreak in South Korea
As the country’s infection numbers soar, most cases have been connected to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which mainstream churches consider a cult.

“More than 1,250 other church members have reported potential symptoms, health officials said, raising the possibility that the nation’s caseload could soon skyrocket further. In response, the government is shutting down thousands of day-care facilities, nursing homes and community centers, even banning the outdoor political rallies that are a feature of life in downtown Seoul.”

Coronavirus: South Korea reports 229 new cases, most linked to church
22 Feb, 2020

South Korea on Saturday reported an eight-fold jump in viral infections in four days to 433, most of them linked to a church and a hospital in and around the fourth-largest city where health workers scrambled to screen more than 9,000 worshippers.

Of the 229 new cases, 200 are from Daegu and nearby regions, which have emerged as the latest front in the widening global fight against

Covid-19
.
There’s concern that the death toll, currently at two, could grow. Virus patients with signs of pneumonia or other serious conditions at the Cheongdo hospital were transferred to other facilities, 17 of them in critical condition, Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip told reporters.

He said that the outbreak had entered a serious new phase, but still expressed cautious optimism that it can be contained to the region surrounding Daegu, where the first case was reported on Tuesday.”

[...]

“South Korean Prime Minister Chung Se-kyun started a government meeting on the health emergency on Friday by saying: “We have entered an emergency phase. Our efforts until now had been focused on blocking the illness from entering the country. But we will now shift the focus on preventing the illness from spreading further in local communities.””

[...]

“Chung promised support to ease a shortage in hospital beds, medical personnel and equipment in Daegu. By Saturday morning, the city of 2.5 million and nearby areas counted 352 cases, including the two fatalities in the Cheongdo hospital.”

—-

“Tedros singled out Iran’s discovery of 18 cases and four deaths in two days — and that a traveler from Iran carried the virus to Lebanon, and another traveler from Iran to Canada.

“These dots are very concerning — take them as dots or trends,” he said.

South Korea Prime Minister Chung Se-kyun started a government meeting on the health emergency by saying, “We have entered an emergency phase."

“The World Health Organization warned that clusters not directly linked to travel, such as the ones in South Korea and Iran, suggest that time may be running out to contain the outbreak.”

    • Chinese researchers have also confirmed that people can spread the virus without showing any symptoms.

    [...]

“Cases have now been recorded across Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia.”

Coronavirus: CDC warns of US outbreak of Covid-19, preps for pandemic
Updated 5 hours ago

“One survey questions worldwide readiness, arguing that no country is fully prepared for the next epidemic or pandemic.

The Global Health Security Index, which was issued last year, found that only 13 of nearly 200 countries score in the top tier, suggesting that most of the world would struggle to deal with a major outbreak of a deadly infectious disease such as Ebola.

The index is a project of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, with research by The Economist Intelligence Unit.”

Japan Can’t Run Out the Clock on Coronavirus
Worries about the viability of the Olympic Games should take a backseat to containing a potential public health crisis.
February 21, 2020

“With a projected cost that might reach $28 billion, the Tokyo Olympics aren't just another international sporting event for Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe views them as a critical means of boosting Japan's tourist industry, entrepreneurship, and brand. High aspirations are high risk, especially with the Olympics, which rarely go off flawlessly. Among the almost predictable risks? A pandemic. In 2010, there was serious talk about postponing the Vancouver Olympics due to the H1N1 outbreak, and in 2016, the Zika virus nearly derailed the Rio summer games, with several prominent athletes skipping them.”

This is the first time since it began releasing daily updates on the status of coronavirus in Hawai‘i that the state has mentioned a potential presence on the Big Island. However, as of Friday afternoon, there remained no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Hawaiian Islands.

Currently, there are 56 people within Hawaiian borders self-monitoring, with one man still in quarantine.”

The Coronavirus May Be ‘Disease X’ Health Experts Warned About
February 21, 2020

“The World Health Organization cautioned years ago that a mysterious “disease X” could spark an international contagion. The new coronavirus, with its ability to quickly morph from mild to deadly, is emerging as a contender.

From recent reports about the stealthy ways the so-called Covid-19 virus spreads and maims, a picture is emerging of an enigmatic pathogen whose effects are mainly mild, but which occasionally -- and unpredictably -- turns deadly in the second week. In less than three months, it’s infected about 77,000 people, mostly in China, and killed more than 2,200.

“A preschooler in Saitama and two brothers in Hokkaido have been confirmed infected with the new coronavirus, prefectural officials announced Friday.”

[...]

“The two in Hokkaido are students at an elementary school in the town of Nakafurano, according to prefectural officials. One is under 10 years old.

It is the first time someone under 10 has caught COVID-19 in Japan.”

“The brothers have no history of travel abroad and the prefectural government is investigating how they became infected.

Prefectural officials also said a female quarantine officer in her 40s who lives in Chitose has been infected.

The cases came as the health ministry said Friday that it will encourage more companies to promote telecommuting and staggered working hours as part of efforts to prevent the virus from spreading further.

The ministry will make the request through Keidanren (the Japan Business Federation) and other lobbies. It will also ask firms to let employees with fevers or other symptoms of illness to take time off at ease.

“We need the understanding of companies to keep the virus from spreading,” Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Katsunobu Kato said at a news conference.”

Health officials fear COVID-19 pandemic as untraceable clusters emerge | The Japan Times
FEB 22, 2020

““A number of spot fires, occurring around the world is a sign that things are ticking along, and what we are going to have here is probably a pandemic,” said Ian Mackay, who studies viruses at Australia’s University of Queensland.”

[...]

““What we see is a very different phase of this outbreak depending where you look,” said WHO’s Dr. Sylvie Briand. “We see different patterns of transmission in different places.””

[...]

“But as the virus becomes more widespread, trying to trace every contact would be futile, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong acknowledged earlier this month.

“If we still hospitalize and isolate every suspect case, our hospitals will be overwhelmed,” he said. So far, the city-state has identified five clusters of transmission, including two churches. But there remain eight locally transmitted cases with no links to earlier cases, or to China.”

[...]

“And it is almost certainly being spread by people who show such mild symptoms that no one can tell, said Dr. Amesh Adalja of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

“If that’s the case, all of these containment methods are not going to work,” Adalja said. “It’s likely mixed in the cold and flu season all over the place, in multiple countries” and gone unnoticed until someone gets severely ill.

These milder symptoms are good news “in terms of not as many people dying,” said Mackay, of Australia. “But it’s really bad news if you are trying to stop a pandemic,” he added.”

[...]

“For now, health officials should try and contain the infection for as long as possible while preparing for a change in strategy by preparing hospitals, readying protective equipment and bolstering laboratory capacity, said Gagandeep Kang, a microbiologist who leads India’s Translational Health Science and Technology Institute.”

“Still, the CDC is preparing in the event the outbreak gets worse.

"We are reviewing all of our pandemic preparedness materials and adapting them to COVID-19," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said Friday during a media briefing, using the name of the disease caused by the coronavirus. "The materials will serve as a blueprint for the community interventions that we will use here in the U.S."

That means reinforcing infection control procedures, making sure health care workers have enough supplies, and planning for a possible influx of patients.

There may be a time when more aggressive measures, such as temporarily closing schools or businesses in the U.S., are necessary, she added.”

I would hope that anyone who comes down with cold/flu symptoms after the 13 day quarantine would still be asked to inform the authorities and get tested just in case...so if there haven't been any incidents like that, and hundreds of people have now been released from those quarantines, so that would suggest that 14 days should be sufficient?

At this point, I would agree. But I do hope they are being requested to somewhat limit their social contact for an additional week or two.
It would only take one major sporting event (or similar setting) to make contact tracing virtually impossible. Moo

I hear supply is controlled and getting supplies are slow. That is understandable since these PPE's must be sent to areas where the need is great.

I work in a hospital and a few weeks ago our supply of N95 masks specifically (which all units with airborne rooms had on hand in our supply room) have been removed from our units and supply controlled by our inventory department
We do mandatory daily checks of our airborne rooms to make sure the negative pressure works properly and also to make sure the alarms sound if negative pressure drops due to IE: doors being left open

Earlier this year our Infection Prevention department refitted all staff again to make sure we were properly fit tested for N95 masks incase the masks we were fitted for previously still worked for us.
Thank goodness for me, I am now fit tested for a different style/size N95 mask than what I was fitted for 9 years ago.

COVID-19 is being treated as a triple precaution Airborne, Droplet and Contact.
For my unit we have come up with an "emergency" tote with all the supplies needed to set up our room quickly and kept in the managers office N95 masks (all types and sizes) full face shield, disposable isolation gowns, and nitrile gloves in all sizes.

Frankly, they are all kidding themselves. From the perspective of the CDC, you can only do so much. People are gonna do what they want to do.....there is a reason for survival of the fittest....

One of the Americans (a lawyer) has been vocal on twitter about how he stayed behind. He got off the ship and has been posting photos of his food at a restaurant and out and about from his hotel. So much for continuing self isolation for him.

A story you all will enjoy.....
A week ago, I go online to purchase N95 masks. Find a great site that said "not made or shipped from China." Ok, that's good.

A week later it has shipped and sitting in a post office in Seoul, South Korea. I think I will let those sit in the garage for awhile if they ever make it here. Lol

What a difference a week makes.....

CODOGNO, Italy -- A dozen northern Italian towns were on effective lockdown Saturday after the new virus linked to China claimed two lives in Italy and sickened an increasing number of people who had no direct links to the origin of the virus.

The secondary contagions prompted local authorities in towns in Lombardy and Veneto to order schools, businesses and restaurants closed, and to cancel sporting events and Masses. The mayor of Milan, the business capital of Italy, shuttered public offices.

Authorities urged calm, but acknowledged that the clusters were alarming given the secondary contagions. The first man to be confirmed as infected in Lombardy had met with someone who had returned from China on Jan. 21, but remains without symptoms.

Will he be put in quarantine once he returns to the US?
