Ha, times have changed. When I was young, folks did pox parties. For you young thangs, it was before vaccines were available/widespread. Moms would gather up all the kids and friends so that all got at once and as the also was better to get younger.

Glad all is ok with your son.
My mom sent me to the neighbor's house to get them!
My mother in law gave my son Advil when he had Chicken Pox. I was at work and never thought not to tell her.
She was also taking his temp rectally with a basal body thermometer- but he felt much hotter than what it read.
I cant remember, but mercury basal body thermometer only reads to like 99° (or something)
He's great, no scarring from the pox or anything surprisingly.
His pox were bigger than quarters!!

Obviously they didn't ask her what she thought before they did it.......

Others were less complimentary about the government action, including Maria Rita Gismondo, head of clinical microbiology, virology and diagnostics at Milan's Luigi Sacco Hospital.

She complained that her department was being asked to carry out a huge quantity of tests on possible coronavirus carriers, and said the alarm had been blown out of proportion.

"It seems to be madness. People are confusing an infection which is slightly more serious than the flu to a lethal pandemic. It is not like that. Look at the numbers," she said on Instagram. "This madness will do a lot of damage."

Who the hell would take a cruise at a time like this! Trapped on a germ incubator. Ugh.
My SIL, unfortunately, in March. I've tried to change her mind. It's going south towards Mexico so she thinks it will be fine. I do not want to see her at least a month afterwards.

God forbid, but if any of us here ever came down with this *knock on wood* we would be screaming at the doc not to give us tylenol (fever is good!) and get those steroids away from me etc.

I can bet that those who have been on this thread may know more than most docs do at this point :p

Pneumonia can have different causes. If it's caused by a bacteria, then antibiotics can be very helpful. And the pneumonia caused by bacteria can occur after something like a bad cold or flu, but it's the bacteria getting into the lungs and causing the pneumonia, therefore antibiotics help.

With this one, it's the Covid-19 virus causing the pneumonia, not a bacteria. Antibiotics won't help a pneumonia that isn't caused by a bacteria.

Anyone who is eligible for the pneumonia vaccine would still be advised to have it now as it might be that a milder case of Covid-19 could set up the conditions to allow a bacteria into the lungs to then cause bacterial pneumonia. It could be a big deal to take that pneumonia vaccine now, just in case the units in hospitals become overwhelmed with covid-19 caused pneumonia, meaning that they have less time/nurses per patient, fewer ECMO machines per patient, etc.

I haven't yet heard of any children dying from Covid-19? So far the reports have been that infected children seem to be having much milder case. Obviously there are children out there who have illnesses like cancer or cystic fibrosis, etc, and they would presumably be higher risk for complications.

Thank you so much for the reply. I am much more informed now regarding the pneumonia. I did get the Pneumovax for the first time last year, and I believe at this time you only need one shot per lifetime. Again, thank you. Katt

I got way behind. Caught up now. But missed the steroid thing. Why no steroids? Every time I get a serious URI they prescribe them to help me breathe.

3 Suspected Cases of Coronavirus Reported in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Public Health on Sunday reported three suspected cases of coronavirus in the western province of Herat.

The three infected persons are Herat residents who recently returned from Qom city in Iran, the Public Health Ministry spokesman Wahidullah Mayar told TOLOnews.

Blood samples of the three have been sent to Kabul to be tested, and the results will be available soon, he said.

The National Security Council in a statement said that all travels to and from Iran have been temporarily banned to prevent the coronavirus outbreak.

Based on this decision, trade relations between the two neighboring countries will also be stopped for an unknown time.

We don’t matter let’s be honest and it’s all about Money.

A global lock down of flights from China should of happened in January. But because of money they don’t want to do a travel bans but it’s got to stage where it needs to be done ASAP.

Look at how many people have been released from quarantine after 14 days when we have seen reports it can be up to 24 days and yesterday they said even as long as 27 days. It’s a ticking time bomb imo

They based the 14 days on early research that said something like 95% of people infected would develop symptoms in about 12.5 days (and I think the average was about 2 to 7 days) , so they felt that 14 days would catch almost all cases. I think it's best combined with testing, as even if someone's not feeling ill by day 14, they might well test positive by then. So I would think a test on day fourteen along with zero symptoms should catch most of the cases (95%+) and then people would have to be warned that if they do start feeling under the weather after the end of the 14 days to inform their doctor or call a dedicated helpline.

They've said all along that their aim isn't about having zero cases but about minimising the number of cases.

I am curious about what sort of changes might happen if/when there's a declaration of pandemic. But even now countries in Europe, North America and elsewhere should know what they're going to do upon that announcement, they shouldn't be waiting for that announcement to get hospitals etc prepared imho.

I wish they were communicating better with the public and telling people 'if x happens, we will do y" so that things don't come as a shock to the public and so that there's better understanding of 'why' certain decisions are taken. I think it's the not-knowing that often feeds fear and conspiracy theories. Not everyone wants to get into it as deeply as us, but they still need answers to their questions to be there for when they need them.

When Dr. Anthony Faucci says we are on the Brink of a Pandemic, it's time to hit Costco for the basics!

My COSTCO report for today:

People are sure stocking up on TP. The Kirkland brand almost sold out. More expensive brands still there. Other popular items: Water, Kirkland wipes, bleach, spray cleaners, paper towels, packaged or canned meals like chili, soups, flavored drinks, some people w lots of wine or beer. Notice a lot of people seemed to be shopping for cold remedies, acetaminophen.

It seemed more busy than a normal non-holiday Sunday. Parking lot very full. Gas lanes full.

I went to Lowe's for my paper towels, tp, Mr Clean and came home with some planted daffodils in a yellow pot because they were so very cheery.

I honestly think things are going to hit the fan this week. If Dr. Faucci is at the brink of calling it a pandemic , it's only for Dr. Tedos to actually declare it.

I went to Costco today. I didn't buy too much because I already have some supplies, as I live in earthquake territory. But, boy have their prices gone up!
I do like their canned albacore tuna, so got one of those. Plus canned chili, corn, beans and such.
Things that ship in from China, will probably be scarce very soon. Imo

I was just coming in here to say:

Question for Dr. Fauci (and Dr. Mike, Dr. Tedros, Dr. Nancy, and Dr. Sylvie):

Exactly how much “sustained human to human transmission” would be needed to justify the declaration of a “P”. Secondly...

Going back to watch the Dr. Fauci video I posted because I didn’t watch it because I was at the store.

I was able to sell a kidney so now I’m also fully stocked up on beer and weed ...plenty of dog food and treats.

Unfortunately the only rubbing alcohol they had was 50%. I thought it had to be 70%?

FTR, do not mistake my preparedness for panic because it’s not about that. Nor is it about fear: I am completely at terms with my own mortality. Just sayin. I’ve pretty much accepted it’s coming, long before today. :)

ETA: The above FTR “Do not mistake my preparedness for panic” reminds me of one my favorite quotes by a brother of mine:

“Do not mistake my kindness for weakness.”

The two docs have gone over the reasons, perhaps someone here on threads could be more eloquent in the explanation as I have to run out right now.

>> Thanks for taking my question. It has two parts. We’ve heard something like 40% of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in China have received corticosteroids. Could this be worsening the disease or helping patients by calming the damaging immune response? The second bit is, what is the worst threat, the virus or the body’s response to it?

>> This is CDC. I would say, in general, that CDC clinical guidance does not recommend the use of steroids for this virus based on the information we have now

Coronavirus Disease 2019

The Lancet article https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30317-2/fulltext emphasizes that there is no evidence that patients with COVID-19 associated lung injury will benefit from the addition of corticosteroids to their therapeutic regimen. In fact, there it is more likely that they will be harmed by the addition.

Quick ETA - Dr. S said something about it sets up severely for a secondary infection also iirc... someone here can expound or I'll try to find Dr. S explanation later on

ETA #2 - I think they used steroids in China when they didn't have enough facilities/equipment/staff to use other measures. Therefore hail Mary to open airways/reduce inflammation...?

Meanwhile in Michigan.......can't believe she said this.....either you are quarantined or your not.....this comment falls in the NOT category.....and then, do you know who's on the list of don't ya???? Crazy......

Lynn Sutfin with the MDHHS sent Mid-Michigan NOW a statement saying:

We have not placed anyone in a quarantine facility because the screening process has not identified any individuals as being at “high risk” of infection. However, those who are identified as being at medium risk, a group that includes all returning residents who have been to mainland China during the two weeks before their return, are being asked to practice home quarantine as much as possible and are contacted daily by local public health for the remainder of the 14 day period with a symptom check. We have about 325 individuals who have been identified that way or who were passengers on a cruise ship with a confirmed COVID-19 case. These traveler referrals meet either the “medium” or “low” risk criteria for COVID-19 monitoring. Once MDHHS receives the referral, we provide info to the local health department in the jurisdiction in which the traveler resides.Local health departments are monitoring their health, (do they have a temperature, cough, difficulty breathing) for 14 days after their last day in China or on the cruise ship. The 325 is an approximate number as that’s the number of people we have been notified about. However, some of those people may be past the 14 day window now.

325 people in Michigan being monitored due to Coronavirus

That doesn't seem very effective. JMO, businesses are concerned that people won't show up for work and they'll have to hire temp workers. If the public health dept. is throttling back on managing this situation in order to protect businesses, that's very wrong.

I actually saw a list that listed
Ever Clear/ Golden Grain alcohol, it's 190 proof= 95%.
I kinda laughed thinking that person was gonna drink it!
ETA: I guess if someone needed a minor procedure like stitches a shot might help the pain. Yow!

Back in college we had everclear punch  Out of a barrel....or was it an oil drum...

Honestly it’s a brilliant idea (in case you can’t get rubbing alcohol).

ETA: medical professionals please clarify if it is ok to...
