I shared my primary concern (for the time being) in post #587:

This is what concerns me more than anything else: That we might not get accurate or timely information if the powers that be seek to control the messaging. I'm afraid we could be headed in the direction of state-run media coverage that limits the amount and content of information shared with the public.

This is my biggest concern too, as I mentioned earlier as regarding the internet. History teaches us that “emergency powers” are often seized and used as an excuse to take away rights we all take for granted. Curtailing freedom of the press and instituting state-run media in order to control the messaging is not a far-fetched and unimaginable response to the Covid-19 situation in the U.S.

What US officials today can learn from a 1918 flu

From CNN's Zachary B. Wolf

You might have heard about the Spanish flu — the global flu pandemic that killed more than 670,000 Americans and tens of millions of people worldwide. It's basically the worst case scenario for what could happen with a pandemic outbreak.

There's no indication that coronavirus will turn into that: Health officials aren't even calling this outbreak a pandemic yet.

But John M. Barry, who wrote a book about the 1918 outbreak, has studied the issue extensively. He wrote in Smithsonian Magazine a few years ago that one reason that pandemic was so devastating is that, in the early stages, health officials didn't tell the truth.

There were a number of reasons for that, including that the US was in the midst of World War I and Congress had passed a law — the Sedition act, since largely repealed — that made it illegal to criticize the government.

"Against this background, while influenza bled into American life, public health officials, determined to keep morale up, began to lie," Barry wrote, pointing to examples of officials spreading happy talk and the press at the time not pushing them for the truth. "That is why, in my view, the most important lesson from 1918 is to tell the truth," Barry wrote.

I just watched something on the Smithsonian Channel...I think the show is called "America's Hidden Stories" or something along those lines...about the 1918 Pandemic. It was very interesting to see how it spread and how the government relayed information to the public and how that may have impacted the spread of the virus.

We WILL experience an outbreak here only because the current US government has absolutely no qualifications or ability to handle this. I mean literally almost all of the CDC was fired and let go and never was replaced.

Awful decisions have put millions on millions at risk.

Trump spent the past 2 years slashing the government agencies responsible for handling the coronavirus outbreak
Hyperbole and misleading IMO. I simply followed the source of the statement from your link. The money ran out, from a one-time emergency plan. IMO

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...t-efforts-to-prevent-global-disease-outbreak/
The CDC programs, part of a global health security initiative, train front-line workers in outbreak detection and work to strengthen laboratory and emergency response systems in countries where disease risks are greatest. The goal is to stop future outbreaks at their source.

Most of the funding comes from a one-time, five-year emergency package that Congress approved to respond to the 2014 Ebola epidemic in West Africa. About $600 million was awarded to the CDC to help countries prevent infectious-disease threats from becoming epidemics. That money is slated to run out by September 2019. Despite statements from President Trump and senior administration officials affirming the importance of controlling outbreaks, officials and global infectious-disease experts are not anticipating that the administration will budget additional resources.

Now a DOG tests positive for coronavirus: Patient's pet Pomeranian comes down with the disease in Hong Kong

A Pomeranian dog has tested positive for the coronavirus after contracting the disease from its owner.

This is terrible news. I dread to think what is going to happen in China with this devastating development.

I don’t understand. If the dog wasn’t showing any symptoms, why was he tested? Because the owner had it?

Evaporated milk is just ok in tea,
it has a tinny taste, but I don't mind as long as it whitens
IDK about cereal?
I use evap milk for my caribbean style mac and cheese,
way better than the flour roux mac and cheese IMO

Oh, I thought since evaporated that you could just add water to "make milk". Heck, I grew up on powdered milk (not much money in our house when young) so I guess I could do that again, if it's still on shelves.

This is very upsetting!!

But, for a bit of levity: there is no way I'm getting my dog to wear a mask. She barely stands still for me to put her leash on her. :)

Sweden has five new cases of CoViD-19, two of them infected by the man who was the second confirmed case, making it a total of seven cases in Sweden. Three of the new cases is in Göteborg, making it a total of four cases here (I write "here" as I'm visiting the city at the moment). The persons in Göteborg who are infected are in their 30ies and two of them had visited Italy before becoming ill, and two had been in contact with the second infected man. According to the doctors, they are not seriously ill. Fem nya bekräftade coronafall i Sverige

Does anybody else remember the story about a comedian crew member of either the Westerdam or Princess Cruise that left the ship somewhere? I’ve been wondering where he went and if he ever was tested? Thanks in advance.

:eek::eek: No politics no politics no politics, pretty pretty please with a well-washed disinfected cherry on top!

I NEED this thread to stay open for my mental sanity regarding the coronavirus.

I found the instructions for how to make milk using evaporated milk in a can. 1 can of evaporated milk and 1 can of water should do it according to this.

"Evaporated milk is reconstituted by adding an equal amount of water. You use a 1 to 1 ratio."

**Can we please not get political or critical of other posters we don’t agree with. I know it is very difficult to not get into politics with this crisis but can we at least try. This thread is too important to get shut down. Thank you**

Coronavirus live updates: Solano County declares emergency after woman found infected

“1:19 p.m. Solano County declares emergency:
Officials in Solano County declared a local emergency after a resident tested positive for the new coronavirus without any clues as to how she could have been infected. The declaration will help the county rally resources to start identifying and screening individuals who may have come into contact with the patient, officials said. “We are taking this situation seriously and are taking steps necessary to protect the health and safety of Solano County residents,” Dr. Bela Matyas, Solano County’s health officer, said in a statement. The county will be holding a press conference at 4:30 p.m. in Fairfield.”

4:30 PM Pacific Time (in a little over an hour).

I’m not sure where to watch live....
