Triage. A 93 year old, even vaccinated, has less future value to society than a young person. And, is less likely to survive Covid, even vaccinated than a younger person.

We don't know the "rest of the story" either....all we know is " 93 year old veteran, vaccinated, with Covid". Did he have other co morbidities? COPD? Heart disease? Obesity? Cancer?

And, he is home, doing fine according to the article. So, fortunately he had a mild case.

He indeed has a much lower chance of responding to vaccines and to monoclonal antibodies. After 80, our ability to form lasting immunity declines and by 90, nearly everyone has that decline - at 93, if he has had a vaccine and it worked (he developed long term immunity), then he would be a better candidate for monoclonal antibodies, but in no way an ideal one.

His mild case is very encouraging and it sounds like his vaccines worked (hopefully he had a booster). It's very sad to me that they can't reserve a dose of the monoclonal antibodies for him, though.

Covid Protocols — Studio 41 Salon

@ilovewings

Your plight had me searching the Internet for Covid-safe salons in Ft Myers.

As you said, it's Florida. The rules are strict here in NYC but are largely ignored. In Florida, the rules are already so lax. Most of the Google responses I found to my query about Covid safe salons in Ft Myers returned with answers that their staff wears masks, but that they will not answer about vaccination status.

The above is the only one I found that claims all its staff is fully vaccinated. It's in Naples, which I know is neighbors to Ft. Myers.

Obviously this is just a Google search. I don't know the place, don't know if their website is accurate, don't know if they do a good job, and I've been to Naples and I remember everything being pricey. But its worth a call, IMO.

Here in NYC I go to a Chinese-owned salon. I have found that my salon is super-cautious. They wore masks when Covid started as that was already customary in Asian culture prior to Covid, and the staff is all vaxed. If there's a Chinese community in Ft. Myers, maybe they have similar protocols because there is a cultural appreciation for mask-wearing and hopefully vaccinations.

Good luck! Our hair is important!!!!!!!

Guess what- I called Studio 41 and voila: I have a consultation with a stylist on Saturday: they are awesome-- all stylists are vaccinated and follow all Covid protocols: they are a little far from me but that is fine- I will meet with the stylist and go from there. I wish I could do my own hair: I used to do it all, dye, style, and all of it, but can't any longer. You are awesome!!!!!!

More companies suspend vaccine mandates, including hospitals and Amtrak (nbcnews.com)

Facing a labor shortage, some health care systems and federal contractors are temporarily lifting their requirements. One physician called the move “absurd.”

A growing number of health care systems and other companies, including Amtrak and General Electric, are temporarily suspending mandates that require employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

The move follows court rulings in recent weeks that paused such requirements from the Biden administration for health care workers and federal contractors. Still, the decision about whether to require vaccinations remained up to individual employers.

The mandate suspensions come at a precarious time: Many employers face labor shortages, while Covid cases are surging and the highly mutated omicron variant is spreading...

DH and I sing in a community chorus. We are preparing for Christmas concerts this Friday night and Saturday afternoon. All the singers are vaccinated and will be wearing masks. Most of the audience members will be vaccinated too, although there could be younger unvaccinated children. Everyone will be required to wear a mask. We have worked really hard on the music for these concerts and we want to perform them. We have our fingers crossed that omicron won't attend!

Second omicron case in NC; hospitals worry holidays will bring case surge :: WRAL.com

A second case of the coronavirus' omicron variant has been confirmed in North Carolina, a researcher said Wednesday.

Dirk Dittmer, an immunologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said he couldn't provide specifics about the person infected with the fast-spreading variant, only that the case wasn't in Charlotte, where North Carolina's first omicron case was confirmed last week.

"It appears that the virus is getting around the state," Dittmer told WRAL News.

On Thursday morning, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Human Services said the second case was identified in a person from the eastern half of the state.

The delta variant remains the dominant strain of the virus in North Carolina, she said, noting that it has been found in more than 95 percent of DNA tests on virus specimens in the state....

They are kinda costly but these are unique times we are experiencing so
it will be well worth it-- clearly if there was no pandemic I could go
to any salon, but in these times I cannot imagine spending two hours
with a non-vaxxed stylist without a mask, breathing on me---ewwwww

CDC warns Americans NOT to get J&J shot over blood clot risk following nine deaths: Panel unanimously recommends more effective Pfizer or Moderna vaccines instead

CDC panel unanimously recommends Pfizer or Moderna vaccine instead of J&J | Daily Mail Online

This is exactly what happened months ago where I live (Europe). One death of a young person due to J&J vaccine caused the authorities do drop it. It also fueled the antivaxers' fears.

I am sure it did fuel fears - it is scary

Welp, here we go. This preprint dropped today.

"These results suggest that the introduction of the Omicron B.1.1.529 variant in England will lead to a substantial increase in SARS-CoV-2 transmission, which, in the absence of strict control measures, has the potential for substantially higher case rates than those recorded during the Alpha B.1.1.7 winter wave in 2020–2021. This is due to Omicron’s apparent high transmissibility and ability to infect individuals with existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2 from prior infection or from
vaccination (9) Our assumptions regarding the extent to which Omicron might evade the immune response are in line with existing knowledge of previous VOCs’ neutralisation, early neutralisation studies of Omicron and preliminary vaccine efficacy estimates (1–6,21). The majority of scenarios considered project that without the implementation of further control measures, hospital admissions resulting from the Omicron wave of transmission could exceed the peak levels recorded in England during the previous winter wave in 2020-2021. Additional
control measures may therefore be required to minimise disease burdens and to protect healthcare services."

Projected epidemiological consequences of the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant in England, December 2021 to April 2022

ETA this gem: We estimate that the Omicron variant is growing in England at an
exponential growth rate of r = 0.29 per day. This corresponds to a 2.4-day doubling time and a reproduction number Rt = 4.0.

I am equally astonished and horrified that even in the presence of high vaccination rates and other control measures, Omicron still has an Rt of 4.0. That is positively mind-boggling. imo

It's different enough to evade immunity very well. Either from vaccines or previous infections. Looks like we are right back where we started.

Hi---I am in Fort Myers---how would I find such a group on Facebook
for this. area??? That is so awesome that people have done this!!!
The one for my area is called "Central Florida Mask & Social Distance Businesses" and people are great about giving mask statuses for businesses that they frequent and also help if you need a recommendation for a business that is following protocols. It is run by local community members and isn't an "official" list of businesses, but it is a great word-of-mouth resource. It's not as active as it once was, but it is still very helpful. Hopefully you can find one for your area.

And yet many schools are choosing now to remove mask requirements. It’s frustrating and hard to grasp the logic.
