i dunno, its slightly like that but for 9/11 everything went from happy days to everything grinding to a halt in a couple of hours, no flights no nothing but its only last what a day or so ( the consequences for 9/11 are far reaching even up to today)

this might end up even longer depending on what happens. many laws changed in Australia to combat terrorism after 9/11 the fact we need to show ID and Register when you buy a prepaid simcard is one of those laws, and if you have 4 or more your file gets looked at because apparently you might be a terrorist

I don’t know. I was depressed for much more than a day. That was a tragedy that hurt most of us for a long time. No one was watching anything in the theaters that was scary or about tragedies. People were very impacted for a long time. The fear gradually changed over time to acceptance of the new normal I guess.

Man what a depressing time to come. So sad.

I have a good story to share. I just spoke to my Dad. He is 90 years old. he went to the Safeway today to get groceries and the lady in front of him kept forgetting things and holding up the line. My Dad didn't complain and was friendly towards her. Well, when my Dad started to pay his grocery bill, the cashier informed him that the lady had paid an extra $50 dollars to go towards my Dad's grocery bill. I thought that was pretty cool and a nice story amidst all the bad news.

I remember the exact moment I came to realize that the "new normal" was underway: after days and days of wall-to-wall news coverage, I began to notice that the big networks were showing TV commercials again. Since then, that has always been a sort of seriousness barometer. If they're not breaking for commercials, I know I need to pay attention.

How coronavirus is straining the US legal system - CNNPolitics

Federal courts in Connecticut and Massachusetts on Thursday postponed all jury trials until mid- to late-April.

In Michigan, state courts have recommended halting all civil and criminal trials unless a defendant is in custody, as well as any hearings that include "vulnerable" people, such as those over 60 years old.

In federal courthouses near Kirkland, Washington, one of the areas hardest hit by the virus, it's turned into a near ghost town — all trials and grand jury proceedings, which would affect prosecutions, are on hold.

Because they are including community contacts of the 5 positive cases & I suspect when one calls the hotline, they give their symptoms to a nurse, blah blah, & those cases are counted as well as those that visited a doctor but had no test. Imo, if John Doe works at WMT and is positive and 600 people end up visiting a doctor with vague symptoms and they all know John Doe, shop at WMT, kids go to school with Doe’s, attend church with Doe, etc., it clearly is 4 from 2 + 2. And tests are not needed by that point unless the patient has underlying issues or are very old. Jmo. By time a person sees a doctor, they are probably half way thru the virus & already infected everyone they know during incubation. Moo
OH only has five known cases, but they are telling people that at least 1 % of the population is likely already infected. So it's actually at least 100,000 cases. Horrifying.

it's really awesome that our technology has advanced to the point that many can work from home, and that many children can continue their studies on line.
smart people all over the world are working on how to make this easier for all of us.
I see technology growing even more rapidly due to this virus.
It may well help to save many lives.
Next we immediately need a cooking show, showing us fantastic recipes you can make with Beans and Rice. ;-)
Coronavirus: Bergen County school districts (NJ) will close next week as cases rise

Schools in all 75 Bergen County school districts will shut down and transition to online and paper learning in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus, County Executive Jim Tedesco said Thursday night.

The recommendation came as Bergen County saw its presumed cases of coronavirus, or COVID-19, rise by two Thursday to 13, the most of any county in the state. State health officials said the risk to residents in the county is "moderate."

Tedesco said a decision to close schools was "a paramount decision, and I don't take it or make it lightly."

"It is vital that we protect our children from the danger of this virus," he said.

Just folks preparing for the worst.....It is no fun to go three+ weeks without electricity, banks being closed, etc. and all the business's in your area only accepting cash......This is common knowledge in Texas hurricane, tornado, natural disaster, country.....moo

I don’t know. I was depressed for much more than a day.

just meant closures not the effect it has on us, like i said in my original post the consequences are far reaching even up until today

i think its really hard to compare the two actually, totally different things, this might change our quality of life for a small period of time but 9/11 changed everything, how things are dealt with, response times, new emergency systems, the fact we can't carry liquid or box cutters anymore on planes, lots of privacy laws were erroded for the "greater good" it still shocks me there are people born after 9/11 who are 18/19 and dont have a great idea of what the world was like before

9/11 is one of the few times in my life i can tell you exactly where i was and what i was going when news broke of the twin towers and the planes flying into them, it was late at night here in Australia

heighten security around the world

but for corona virus it might change our lives for a few months, when the bird flu and swine flu happened we had these times of closures it just wasn't as severe so we've seen this before just not on this scale i guess

Yesterday, I told everyone I was feeling better. This morning I had an appt. at my local Veteran Affairs medical clinic for a meeting . First thing that happened after getting off the elevator a clinical staff member dressed in medical scrubs, mask and gloves asked me a few questions, if I had been ill or had been in contact with anyone from out of the united states. I had checked my temperature Tuesday night and Wednesday morning it was 94.6. But since I had been running a fever within the last week, she asked me to put on a mask and follow her her into the exam room for further questions from the doctor. A nurse came in wearing a mask and gloves asking me the same questions. I gave her the information about when my fever and coughing began.
The same answers as I gave the first clinical staff member. She checked my blood pressure, oxygen rate and temperature which turned out to be 99.6 a low grade fever I've been running. She left the room and came back a few minutes later.
I was told to go home and wear a mask when I'm around by husband. If I feel worst go to the ER. Stay away from people for next two days. The clinical staff member by the elevator provided me with 3 extras mask to take home.

Why would one need to withdraw their money from the banks ?

I don’t think this is happening and if it is, I think it’s just people wanting to have cash on hand for their own personal comfort.

This is not a financial crisis. The market is down because investors know many sectors will take a hit due to people not going out - it is unfortunate but bad things happen, companies that focus on travel and recreation will be less valuable while consumer goods and home entertainment companies will do great. The Fed just pumped $1.5 trillion into Treasuries. After 2008 all systemically important financial institutions are required to have enormous reserves that are audited constantly by the Federal Reserve.

There isn’t and never will be a run on the banks. That’s one thing you DON’T have to worry about. They have more money than they know what to do with and much of it has to be liquid. I say this as someone who spent the last financial crisis (2008 - 2015) representing investment banks in complying with regulatory investigations.

Ok... I posted earlier today about my snowbird parents being in south FL until the end of March. They are 87 and all things considered, are in excellent health. Just spoke with my father and they have decided to come back on the first flight they can get out. Answered prayer!

Love your "Wash your hands" quote. So true. If there is any upside to all this, hopefully people develop healthier habits and become more prepared for emergencies.
True that! I'm sick of seeing people in rest rooms not washing their hands. I have a mental "running list" of people in some areas of the country which I won't post here who do that but I will say that here in Washington state I'm impressed at the numbers (pre virus) who wash their hands thoroughly, with soap, even at the airport.

Hopefully a couple of good habits will emerge from this pandemic; wash your hands and stop touching your face/eyes until you do! MOO.

I usually withdraw cash prior to a storm here in Nova Scotia for emergencies. Maybe people are thinking along the same lines?
