I bet we live in the same state Lilibet!

We’ve been in Southern Oregon for 35 years! Before that in the CA redwoods. Most of the same things to prepare for in both places.

I am new here so I don't want to say the wrong thing. I live in Northern California and we have had 1 positive that has since recovered and 1 new one tonight that is self isolating. I just don't know what to believe. Is this a real thing or is this a media driven panic of the month?
I explain it like this......now these are just random numbers........just for demonstration purposes.

And all in my opinion

It’s 1 in 1000000000 people

....than it’s 1 in every 10000 people.......as it spreads its
1 in every 100...then 1 in 3

That’s how I see it and that is why I will now stay home prepped....(thankful I can)
its very smart thing to do, with what happened in Paradise and how fast that fire moved i mean any seconds you can buy yourself could save your life

to the people also keep quoting numbers, to me this isn't about numbers its about what could happen, you get 1 person out in the wild and they infect 5 and those 5 don't find out for a week and they have visited and had contact with 100 people, out of that 100 people you get 25 infected and they visited 100 people each now you are at 250 and then next is 2500 and then 25,000 within a couple of week. it moves quickly and that is what we are trying to avoid

We think the same thing at the same time, lol.

I haven't seen U.S. cases mimicking what is happening in Europe or Asia. Could you cite some examples? Thanks!

No. I can’t. As the key word is “when”. Do you believe that we are immune from whats happening around the world? Are we better prepared to prevent the spread?

I certainly felt so at the beginning of this thread, watching what was happening in China. I said so, too. I felt our nation could cope with this.

I didn’t know that the National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense (the National pandemic response team created in 2014 after the Ebola crisis began) was dissolved in 2018.

I didn’t realize the CDC had rejected test kits offered by the WHO which every other nation has accepted.

I didn’t know that various leaders around our country would confuse the public, minimize the seriousness and be super slow to act to stop the spread.

So now I’m frightened that it’s going to explode like a bomb in the US.

In 2014 we had 11 cases of Ebola in the US. Only two were due to “community spread”. We had only two deaths.

Yes that was a different disease and spreads differently but we aggressively tracked everyone who had contact with someone with the disease and forced them into quarantine until they were cleared.

We didn’t do that here.

So it’s hard to stay positive for me. I’m trying but I am scared.

Good morning everyone. Up at 6am here, had such bad dreams (note to self: leave this thread alone well in advance of bedtime in future).
Having cleaned, fed and medicated the various felines, I made a coffee and took some of the cats out into the garden. Everything out there is so calm and peaceful. Birds singing, the distant sound of an airplane, the nearby sound of William (cat) uttering threats to said birds...Signs of Spring are quite literally shooting up everywhere. Last year was the first time I ever did anything productive in the garden and this year, I’m incredibly grateful to have the space to grow fruit and veggies and to have a small tranquil place of my own. Sitting out there in the quiet, it’s very hard to believe what’s happening in the wider world.
I just wish I could shed this growing sense of apprehension and unease.

Thank you for the welcome. I am in Humboldt county the northern part. And I do know who Dr Fauci is and totally trust him. I was just grasping at straws with the media panic. Sorry for getting off on the wrong foot.
Welcome Squinchy!! I don't think you got off on the wrong foot! Thanks for joining us!

Consider how much of a financial impact this is already having on the country. Theme parks, cruise lines, and large and small businesses across the country are shutting down. Huge money making holiday celebrations and sporting events have been cancelled. And Trump and Pelosi were on the same page. This is a real thing.
Yes of course it is

Personally, I believe that once the testing of sick individuals actually starts being done on a regular basis, our numbers will be very similar. Asia testing MANY people. And it's also important to remember that it takes time (weeks) from the time cases are identified in a country to the time there is widespread disease.
I think the actual numbers will be much greater because a lot of people that have mild or no symptoms will never be tested and counted.

When more is know about this virus I'm sure that we will be able to extrapolate the known cases into data of all cases of infection. JMO

You’re fine! We understand. We were in Southern Humboldt (SoHum :)) and I thought you might be in Humboldt. I hadn’t heard about the second case yet. *Runs off to check out Lost Coast Outpost or Redheaded Blackbelt.*

OT—By the way, there are a lot of Humboldt county missing persons threads here on WS, if you’re interested and need a distraction. :(

Do you think Italy, France and Spain quarantining their entire nations are doing so due to a media-driven panic of the month? Whole nations are that stupid?

And there’s much more than 1case in Northern California:

In Santa Clara County, cases soared from a single one on Jan. 31 to more than ninety Saturday, while Napa County has yet to confirm a case. Alameda County — home to the University of California at Berkeley, an international draw with students and faculty from around the world — has just a handful, and none on campus.

“It’s just really hard to know how much of it is luck and how much of it is under-detection,” said Arthur Reingold, division head of epidemiology and biostatistics at UC Berkeley.

Those tested for the disease known as COVID-19 had either known exposure through foreign travel, contact with infected people or severe symptoms that drove them to seek medical care. But many people who are infected don’t feel sick or only mildly ill, though they can still transmit the virus. As a result, they don’t seek treatment or get tested, potentially masking the true extent of the disease in the Bay Area.
Coronavirus: Why are cases so high in some Bay Area counties?

Yes there are two more sparsely populated counties in Northern California that only have had one confirmed case each- Shasta county and Humboldt County. But in the more populated Santa Clara county there’s been 91 cases and two deaths confirmed for a total death rate of confirmed cases of about 2.2. Yet with limits on who is tested, and a two week incubation period, we don’t yet know what this is going to look like.

Can we afford to gamble?

Our restaurant, busy tonight and last night.
We are a bit of a social hub of doctors, lawyers and elders.
They are not buying the media's, The end of the world as we know it pitch".
Some told us that they purposely came to dinner at our place to support us.
My husband and myself, do not believe, that this virus is the end of the world as we know it either.
As to why, entire countries have shut down EVERYTHING.
I have no answers.
The deaths are very low, throughout the world.
Yes, there is PANIC.
But, numbers do Not lie.
You all know that there is media that makes money on your every click.
I wish that the media cared more about the human race, instead of money.
Just consider this. Please.
Stop the panic.
We'll be fine.
Kali - I suggest that you take a peek at Tricia's post about the rules in this thread. The subject of downplaying peoples concerns and discrediting information is touched upon. @Amonet also has a wonderful post a page or so back. My personal opinion is: if you think a person is panicking, is the appropriate response "calm down"? That never works. Not in my experience at least.

Anyway, this is just a general rant and not to anyone in particular - I have been seeing so many people are having a really difficult time wrapping their head around what is going on. Instead of preparing or taking precautions, some dig their heels in and practically deny there is a global pandemic happing right now. Understandable - none of us have had to deal with this before. As someone mentioned a few posts ago, it also makes my BP rise. Comparing this to the flu doesn't make sense. It's not the flu.

I live in NYC and I took a walk earlier. Currently, businesses are only allowed to fill to 50% capacity. I walked past numerous bars that were PACKED. There were/are people acting like this is party time. I don't get it.

Boiling it down: It's winter and your child has a wet head. Not all kids get sick but do you send them out without a jacket or hat? You don't want to take that chance, you take precautions because you don't want them to get sick. If kids in your child's class are coughing and some are currently known to be sick, do you wish their parents kept them home? What if the parent of the sick child brushed you off and told you that your child will be fine, don't panic. If your child gets the flu and has a fever - would you send him to school knowing they might infect one or more of the other kids?

Personally, I don't think taking precautions is panic. Preparing for something that ultimately may have a better outcome than what you prepared for is pretty smart IMO. I was also living in NYC during 9/11. Afterwards, we were all told to make "go bags" in the case that something like that were to happen again. We still get reminders that having a "go bag" is a good idea for anything that might pop up - just in case. Is that panicking? IMO, I don't think so. It's pretty smart if you ask me.

Funny thing about media and the thought that media is pushing panic: I see panic coming from the media that is accusing others of pushing panic. Weird how that works.

I’m trying to explain to my dog that we need to ration the dog treats. He’s not understanding.

OT—I know! A possible serial killer was a neighbor. We didn’t know that then, but there was enough bad stuff going on that we skedaddled. But it’s sooooo beautiful.
