I am not a young person basher either. I am however a high school teacher so I have spent years dealing with 1000s of these kids and they do have an invincible spirit. It is just that this invincible spirit right now is very dangerous. The kids we are seeing videos of now in FL are not high school kids, but are young adults with their own rights. The are very young adults who are not properly digesting the enormity of this situation. If they can't do it, then LE will have to do it for them. I am so sorry that as an educator I have seen how we have released so many kids into adulthood lacking these basic skills of responsibility because we spent so many year concentrating on that stupid TEST (which was just as marketing ploy by the book/ testing companies that have made BILLIONS) and what we succeeded most in is making kids with no common sense. I have said more than once in the past couple of weeks that I hope the education systems changes as a result of what is happening now.

what test?

You are forgetting that these parents may face charges and losing their children if they leave them home alone. Please, before you complain, check the law! Don't complain about the parents. Complain about the laws that force the parents to have their children accompany them while shopping.

According to the Illinois General Assembly, current state law says parents can face neglect charges for leaving children under the age of 14 "without supervision for an unreasonable period without regard for the mental or physical health, safety, or welfare of that minor.

Home Alone Rules by State - iMom

"...current state law says parents can face neglect charges for leaving children under the age of 14 "without supervision for an unreasonable period and without regard for the mental or physical health, safety, or welfare of that minor."

IMO, that^^^ does not say that children cannot stay home while parents carry out important tasks or errands.

It says you cannot leave then home for an 'unreasonable' amount of time and 'without regard' for their safety.

So I interpret that as saying that if you leave them for a short time, in a safe place, like a locked up home with a phone and with food and water, and a way to communicate with you in an emergency, it is not against the law. JMO

Yeah I can’t even read that.

Not shooting the messenger of course.

(Ralph)

Scrolling past that for my own sanity.

This is going to be so rough watching this all go down...I almost want to totally close myself off, all news and everything, and not know anything about anything...I have actually really thought about this a few times, but then I would miss you guys.

Literally sick to my stomach seeing that headline.

Anyway, nightshift clocking in and catching up in here o_O

ETA:

Are all street LE wearing “hazmat” suits? Please tell me all cops have PPE.

I mean I’ve been talking about this very thing from the start, idiots, hard hit on the front lines with police, first responders...

Surely they’ve all been wearing protective gear?

Surely they have PPE. All departments, anyone who goes out should.

Period.

I think a top $ priority should be ensuring there is PPE for all first responders, Police, etc. Hopefully it is. It’s gotta be.

(Ugh flashbacks of many terrible YouTube videos.)

I know in the "big picture" this isn't important, but I have a sad young man in my house tonight as he just learned that his high school production of "The Wizard of Oz" has been cancelled. He had been cast as the Cowardly Lion.

This comes on the heels of his state competition being cancelled in which he had received 3 superiors at the district level and was to compete at states in all 3 areas: solo vocals, duet vocals, and duet acting.

He understands that other people are experiencing losses much more significant and he understands that the world is in turmoil, so he is keeping perspective, but in his personal world, this makes him sad. And as his mom, it makes me sad for him.

Have you heard about #sunshinesongs started by Laura Benanti? Ben Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda are also watching.

Florida is going to explode in the next two weeks, based on the numbers. They have 328 "confirmed" cases of Coronavirus. Note the "quotes". Because, the hospital staff refused to test one man, because he had not been to China recently!

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article241312156.html

The reason Florida is going to be the "hot spot" is due to the aged population, more than 200,000 in nursing homes or assisted living. And, the reckless irresponsibility of the people...we wouldn't want to cancel the Spring Break party!

Almost all our family members are in Clark County. We're 3 miles outside the county line. My temp is up to 100.6 today and still feels like a cold. No shortness of breath. Haven't been able to snuggle up with my husband for 6 days. Every morning I make the bed and put the pillows to the very edge but the next morning they're against each other again.
Catch a smile and a "Get Well Soon" wish, Tillicum.......:)......moo

I did hear about it! They are doing a live read-through on Wednesday that will be recorded so maybe I will encourage him to submit a clip. I have a recording of him singing "Corner of the Sky" from Pippin which was to be his piece for the state competition so maybe he could submit that also. Thank you for reminding me about it!

Sorry for your dear friend. We just had a young high school boy die in a car accident over the weekend. He comes from a large family and our #* governor has said no gatherings over 10, including funerals. Plus all his friends from school. What have we come to when we can't even hold a funeral to say goodbye? And I don't suppose the funeral home will lower their price on funerals, even though they're not actually doing that much. Oh but they told the family they could arrange with them ($$$) for a memorial service later. So disgusted with my state of Nebraska.

MOO

This is why I'll take my chances and still give blood tomorrow. Car crashes, shootings, etc. still happen, threatening the lives of young and old alike. Blood is needed more than ever as those at higher risk need to self-isolate and can't donate. Red Cross is taking precautions.

That article details some contradictory information, such as WHO only providing protocol for developing tests, while a few paragraphs below WHO relates how many actual TESTS they distributed in other countries while CDC was insisting on developing their own. Anyway, whether or not the US in hind sight claims they didn't ask for WHO tests, they decided to develop their own thru the CDC/FDA, and produced a plethora of faulty tests which they had to recall because of bad reagents that produced inconclusive results. This put off testing in the USA for weeks, until private labs started to develop their own, and received exemptions from the FDA to market untested products because of emergency. A virtual failure of public health policy in the USA, reverting to the private sector to try to save us. While S Korea became the world's best example of taking the bull by its horns, so to speak. Protecting its people through massive testing early on. What Went Wrong with Coronavirus Testing in the U.S.

True. Also, take a look at the chart. 77.58% infected are under 60 years old. 27.84% infected are 20-something years old. They tested not only those showing symptoms but their contacts, young or old, symptomatic or asymptomatic, and isolated them. Stopped the spread early on.

It's not unheard of for those in dire straits to seek other forms of alcohol, like Sterno or rubbing alcohol in desperation. Now, rubbing alcohol is also scarce, so that may prevent some deaths Hard choices. IMO

Or vanilla extract... o_O

I always have a low fever with colds & sinus infections.
Pleeeaaasse be sure to investigate. I'm not remembering many of my colds that were accompanied by fever. Not to say it's impossible.

If you can get tested, maybe think about it. I'm hoping big big time that you feel better! XO

I have a couple of friends down there. One is a pharmacist. :(

Sounds sooo much yummier than Sterno, though I don't wish to make light of someone's real misery.

SAN FRANCISCO

“We want you to only go out if absolutely necessary for essential services… the ultimate goal is to prevent people from contacting one another that could lead to the spread of the virus.” San Francisco Mayor London Breed discusses the city’s shelter in place measure. CNN on Twitter
