Gastrointestinal symptoms should be a new focus for clinicians testing for novel coronavirus (COVID-19), according to 2 new papers published online in the journal Gastroenterology.

Although many clinicians were looking at fever and cough in patients, the new information detailed that gastrointestinal issues and stool samples could lead to a COVID-19 diagnosis.

In the first paper, investigators from Shanghai, China, sought to document the symptoms of the COVID-19. Although fever, dry cough, and dyspnea presented in most cases, they wanted to understand what impact the virus had on symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. So far, those symptoms have varied among different study populations, the authors wrote.

Gastrointestinal Issues Could Help Diagnose Coronavirus

(ETA the articles don't suggest that gastric issues are a symptom. Rather the articles suggest that evidence of the virus can be found in fecal matter. )

I appreciate this link, Henry, but I think we need to be careful not to suggest an expectation of gastric issues, lest people misunderstand the most common symptoms. The whole toilet paper frenzy makes me suspect that there is a widespread assumption that gastric issues are the symptom to watch for.

I could, but everyone else has kids, or whatever. I don't. I could probably make a big deal out of it, but I am not too worried.

And I am doing nothing but watching "Too Cute" when I come home from work. No more news.
OMG! "Too Cute" is still on Animal Planet
I am beginning to watch it again On Demand to escape from cable news. Bless you for mentioning it.

Are their statistics anywhere showing if all infected people had recently been overseas or in contact with someone who had been overseas?

There is community transfer throughout Asia, the EU, Canada, Australia and most countries in the world. Everyone has failed to contain. I think it's safe to assume that although infections started with travellers from China, then Iran, followed by Italy, it's no longer about travelling. Travellers are required to self-isolate by law in many places. If that simple law had been in place from the beginning, there would have been a chance to contain.

Everyone under-estimated the contagiousness of the virus, and disbelieved that people could be contagious without symptoms, or that the virus could remain live on surfaces for days.

Now we all know. Even the partiers will get it in 5-6 weeks, if they're not dead sooner.

We are keeping these stats in Canada, local transmission has just begun to occur. About 90% of cases are travel related up to now. Moo

A friend of mine is now on mandatory lockdown because a co-worker chose to come into work last week, sick. They tested positive. They work with a vulnerable population. They had orders already last week not to come into work sick and they have paid leave.

Now everyone there is quarantined.

A coworker who sat next to me at a meeting on Friday was off sick on Monday. My boss was off sick today. We're all working online, so they're not really off sick, and their only symptoms are a mild cough and a bit of a sore throat.

Even last week, everyone was carrying on as usual - which means coming to work sick because the work is more important.

I told my husband that I need some "kitten therapy", and may need to pick up 2 kittens from the shelter this week.

I disagree.....the panic buying is the only thing they control. Most think it's only a cough and a fever IMO. Just delivering the facts....you are correct that this is a novel virus which means we dont know alot about it.

The World Health Organization says that it's not certain yet how long the coronavirus lives on surfaces, but preliminary information indicates that it may "persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days."

Harvard Health notes that the virus is more likely to survive on hard services than softer ones like clothing fabric. Still, doctors suggest removing shoes and changing into clean clothes to prevent outside germs from coming into your home.

(idk where but I read we should no longer bring our shoes inside)

OHIO

We are asking businesses -- beginning immediately to take the temperature of every single employee every day before they come to work. We're asking them to be aggressive in regard to cleaning surfaces and having soap/hand sanitizer available. Send employees home who are sick.

The temperature check is not perfect but is one way to screen out employees who may be sick.

We're taking this one step at a time. If we find that we can't get employers to take temperatures, we'll have to go to the next stage and close everything down unless it's essential. #FlattenTheCurve #COVID19OhioReady #COVID19

We're not there yet. I just plead with employees, if you're sick stay home. Every employer should take the temperature of every single person every day. We have a finite period to slow #COVID19 down.

Businesses should do everything they can to monitor their workforce. We're dead serious about employers taking temperatures. We're expecting them to do this.

Governor Mike DeWine on Twitter
I believe the Midwest Coalition of Trades (construction trades) has instituted this policy as of today. Our Local Union sent an email detailing this. They've also instituted staggered start, break, and lunchtimes to whittle groups down. Also a big problem for us is mandatory port a john cleaning everyday as opposed to weekly. Wash stations which we rarely had along w hand sanitizer on jobs.

Mentioned this to my hubby this am. He is not abusive, and we are the closest of friends. Even after 32 years together. I once was in an abusive relationship, but got out with the clothes on my back. No kids fortunately.
I feel awful for those families, especially the children. No hiding much, if everyone is locked down together. :-(

Why 30 days instead of two weeks, then re-access?

‘Cannot survive:’ Las Vegas mayor asks governor to reduce business shutdown

Of course. Because casinos are essential! Public health crisis is irrelevant.

Mayor Goodman had her chance to make a responsible decision, to close businesses until April 1st, at least. When she didn't provide the leadership, the governor stepped up.

Mayor Goodman has a demonstrated lack of public responsibility to her constituents in Las Vegas.

I very much appreciate the facts that you are delivering. But I do insist on clarification regarding the symptoms. The studies you gave me did not suggest that bowel issues were a common symptom. Instead, they suggest that evidence of the virus can be found in fecal material.

It's really important that people are not waiting for bowel symptoms before they suspect they may have Covid-19. Bowel symptoms show up in 3.7% of the cases.

When this is over, I hope I have the grace to stop my singsongy "do we need to talk about social distance" in stores. I'm pretty sure, singsongy or no, I'm flat rude about it. Jmo
I’m so grateful I don’t have to be in a store for a couple weeks. I’m afraid I will end up in trouble due to some of the things I observe during my outings.
