CLEARWATER — The City Council voted on Wednesday to close public access for two weeks to Clearwater Beach, one of the nation’s top tourist destinations, as a precaution to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

"This is an opportunity for the number one beach in the country to say that we value public health,” Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos said. “Don’t kid yourself because we’ve only got (10) cases in Pinellas County. It’s going to go up. I don’t want it to come back and haunt us to say it happened here because Clearwater was not willing to stick its neck out and and be a leader.”

Especially with a high population of retirees. Well, those kids can say goodbye to their grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents. Sorry, that was probably insensitive. I can’t get those images out of my head. It makes my blood boil.

I cancelled my birthday two weeks ago due to the fact that we didn’t know if we had been exposed through a school with one of the first cases. I’ve been doing social distancing since. However, I’ve been following this story with you guys since it broke and understood the severity. I just don’t think ignorance can be an excuse at this point. Everyone knows now.

I was texting with a friend earlier about the kids cavorting on the beaches. She said “Eat, drink and be merry?” And I said “And tomorrow you old people die.”

I very much appreciate the facts that you are delivering. But I do insist on clarification regarding the symptoms. The studies you gave me did not suggest that bowel issues were a symptom. Instead, they suggest that evidence of the virus can be found in fecal material.


It's really important that people are not waiting for bowel symptoms before they suspect they may have Covid-19. Bowel symptoms show up in less than 3% of the cases.

n the first paper, investigators from Shanghai, China, sought to document the symptoms of the COVID-19. Although fever, dry cough, and dyspnea presented in most cases, they wanted to understand what impact the virus had on symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. So far, those symptoms have varied among different study populations, the authors wrote.

Former studies on SARS, which is related to COVID-19 and can present with similar symptoms, showed that the viral respiratory illness was verified in patients after detection in biopsy specimens and stool. This was true even after the patients had been discharged from the hospital.

The study authors noted that the first US patient admitted to a hospital with confirmed coronavirus had a loose bowel movement on hospital day 2. Labs in China have been able to isolate the live coronavirus from the stool of patients. Such factors brought the gastrointestinal tract to the forefront of investigators’ minds and suggested that clinicians should identify patients with gastrointestinal symptoms and carefully monitor them.

In case anyone was wondering, my DH's test results for Corona Virus are still not back. He called a number we were given, left a message and we didn't hear anything back. So we still don't know anything. We're still sleeping in separate bedrooms tonight but we briefly broke isolation from one another today. We ran into each other in the hallway and instead of turning and going back inside my room so he could pass without coming near me, I told him I don't care if he has Covora Virus or not I wanted a hug. I'm bound to get CoV if he has it anyway. So we held each other for a few moments and he kissed the top of my head. Then I went and poured hand sanitizer on my head where he kissed me and washed my hands really well, as if that will work. LOL. I've got to laugh or I'll cry at this point.

The good news is that we are both feeling better today. Today was our 3rd day taking anti-malarial meds. I'm not sure if those meds are helping our bodies fight or if maybe we don't have the Corona Virus at all. Tomorrow (Thursday) will be one week since my DH's first symptoms of coughing started. My coughing started the next day (Last Friday). DH had a low-grade fever Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues, but no fever today. If this is some other bug that he wasn't tested for, he might be over it already. I've read the Corona Virus lasts for about 2 weeks. Therefore, I'm thinking either the meds and vitamins we are taking are helping OR we don't have Corona Virus yet. I'm leaning towards the idea that we probably don't have it.

I’m so grateful I don’t have to be in a store for a couple weeks. I’m afraid I will end up in trouble due to some of the things I observe during my outings.

Are their statistics anywhere showing if all infected people had recently been overseas or in contact with someone who had been overseas?

No, there are not. Right now, it's still case by case, reports to the CDC, and then wait for CDC to investigate vectors. Whenever they announce "community transmission" (which is a thing where I live - near Los Angeles), it means no known vector from a traveler and not a traveler themselves.

We just don't have data on how many people in each category - yet.

People are getting it from school kids, teachers, but especially from hospital waiting rooms, some medical equipment and personnel, shopkeepers, food servers (via air), large gatherings, etc, etc.
