Local law enforcement officials across the country are rapidly making major operational changes in preparation for the continued spread of coronavirus, as they face potential strains in resources and staffing without precedent in modern American history.

While policing is a public service centered around direct interactions with members of the public, several departments have already sought to limit responses to certain incidents and prioritize arrests of serious and violent offenses over some misdemeanor crimes.

Steve Casstevens, the head of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) told ABC News Wednesday that “consistently” across the country, departments are changing the way they respond to calls in cases where an officer is not needed on scene.

Sheriffs around the country are also raising alarm about the potential crisis of the virus entering local jails, the majority of which do not have in-house medical care, according to Sheriff David Mahoney, the incoming president of the National Sheriffs Association.

There is an ice cream truck circling our neighborhood. Playing music to entice the kids. Seems like a bad idea, imo. And the music is creepy.

It's not unheard of for those in dire straits to seek other forms of alcohol, like Sterno or rubbing alcohol in desperation. Now, rubbing alcohol is also scarce, so that may prevent some deaths Hard choices. IMO

Children's Mercy: Child tests positive for COVID-19, being self-quarantined at home
[...]

The child came to Children's Mercy Hospital's emergency room at the Adele Hall campus in downtown Kansas City on Sunday with respiratory symptoms after they had been in contact with someone who had also tested positive.

The hospital says it has tested around 100 kids in the past week. This child was the only one who tested positive.

Right now, they say they have plenty of tests, but they are only testing those with both symptoms and risk factors.

"If your children has mild respiratory symptoms, you should be staying home and not seeking medical care unless they absolutely need to be seen by their healthcare provider. Then they should call their primary care physician," said Angela Myers, division director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Children's Mercy Hospital.

Sorry, I just have to shake my head at the advice to "call their primary care physician". So many just don't have that ability, that contact in their address book. 27 million uninsured in the USA.

NORTH CAROLINA

[...]

As testing for the novel coronavirus increases across North Carolina, it remains unclear how many tests are available, where testing is being conducted and how accessible tests are in each county.

In an effort to get answers to those questions and others, journalists from six newsrooms across North Carolina have collaborated to track COVID-19 testing in the state.

[...]

What has become clear is that state-issued testing kits for COVID-19 are still in short supply in some counties.

All local agencies that answered the question indicated the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has made three test kits available to each county. Many agencies said they had received additional kits after using their initial supply but it was not immediately clear how quickly the additional kits were arriving nor was it clear whether agencies had to use all three kits before getting three more from the state.

[...]

Nearly half of the state’s 85 local health agencies did not respond at all.

Reporters collaborating on this project will continue asking questions of public health officials through the duration of the pandemic and will provide updates and additional reporting as more information becomes available.

Atlanta today...I'm in the grocery with mask and gloves....not another sole in the place had anything. They were crowding each other and there is barely anything in the store.......no dairy, no eggs, no beef, no sandwich meat, no canned fruit, very little canned vegetables.
Plenty of fresh produce, cookies, cereal, and pop tarts though.
Update: I am in Las Cruces, NM. Finally after fretting about when to pickup prescription, I went to Walmart around 5:30 p.m. tonight. I was driving myself crazy worrying about it, so needed to get that off my mind. Thankfully, I was only person at the pharmacy, but the rest of WMart was packed with shoppers & families. Glad I don't need to shop for a couple months.
