Which could easily be purchased at Walmart or online.
Absolutely. Especially with masks, we really could care less about browsing fabric. It just needs to be quilt quality cotton. In fact, I got desperate for fabric and ended up using some of my fat quarters that were meant for a quilt.

It’s like a web of polyester. You can get anything from lightweight to heavyweight. While it’s probably not waterproof, it’s water resistant.

I’ve asked Tricia to start a mask making thread. I’ll post the different patterns our community is using for the hospitals, as well as the feedback we are getting from nurses regarding personal preferences. I’m trying to make variations to suit various needs.

I’ll also explain how to make ties from scratch in that thread as well, as some people don’t like the elastic.
Jane, that would be so very helpful, thx!

Thank you. I posted this way back in some #thread.
That's the site where I read about breathability vs percentage of protection...As in cotton vs vacuum cleaner bags and dishtowels.
Your original post and the post about the deaconess masks are what got me started. I’ve lost track of how many days in a row I’ve been making them now.

Medium weight is probably the best.

ETA - oops. You probably meant the ties or the thread, not the interfacing.

That really surprises me that a dish towel is better than a pillow case or silk. Silk is so tightly woven, it even cuts the wind on cold days. Pillowcases too, much more tightly woven than the dish towels I've used.
speaking of pillowcases, I change my bed first thing each morning, always have due to my allergy issue.
I think during this crisis one should change pillowcases. Idk why I think this, but I do, lol. Moo

If you go outside your home and don’t wash your hair before bed, yes, for sure.

ETA - if I leave the house at all now I wear a ball cap to cover my hair and then launder the cap.

Maybe only if you share that pillowcase with another human. Or, don't wash you hands before sleeping in it. JMO

My walmart has tons of fat quarters besides the usual bolts of fabric. Jmo

MOO and a guess: maybe the weave is too tight for regular breathing? If a mask is too restrictive of oxygen, that's not good for longterm wear.

I do wonder why pillowcases are so tightly woven. I'm guessing it's because people learned long ago that saliva and mucous need to stay on the top of the thing.

Your point about silk is eye-opening. Silk scarves are being used throughout France as masks, and since they aren't tightly fitted (and everyone knows how to tie them to block incoming air), they seem to be helping.

This is kind of revelation to me, as I've noticed how they do cut wind, but never thought about why.

I don't always believe the news is telling the exact truth, instead they're cherry picking sound bites to push their agenda. Case in point on whether President Trump will send ventilators overseas, and not give them to the US first, he said:

"we have other companies that are doing ventilators, including General Motors. But we have nine other companies doing ventilators. As we outpace what we need, we’re going to be sending them to Italy. We’re going to be sending them to France. We’re going to be sending them to Spain, where they have tremendous problems, and other countries as we — as we can. But the fact that we’re doing so many so quickly is a tribute to our great companies".

Remarks by President Trump and Members of the Coronavirus Task Force in a Press Briefing | The White House

I don't really care what CNN or Vanity Fair says, when I can get the official transcript and read it for myself.

MOO

I was thinking more about breathing on the pillow/case. I can’t wash my hair before bed, I’d look like Phil Spector in the morning.

Later on in that article they point out that pillowcases would be the most breathable fabric, compared to a surgical mask.

I would kill to be able to grab an entire bolt of a solid neutral color right now that would work for both men and women. But I’m not going to Walmart!

Please watch this..... My 14 year old adopted Grandson Tucker has Autism..... Robert Willard is Tucker's Junior High Home Room Life Skills teacher. All Special Needs kids go to First Period in Mr. Willard's Life Skills class( he waits outside the back door of the school to escort each Special Needs kid to class every morning). They gather there again at lunch time to go with Mr. Willard as a group to lunch. ( so no one has to sit alone because they are different ). They all go back to Mr. Willard's for the last period of the day and he make's sure each of them are picked up safely to go to their homes..........Let me tell you the little I know about Robert Willard. He is a US Army veteran. He is a Texas Longhorn football fan. He is a devoted husband to his wife who has been very sick for a long time with Sickle Cell Anemia. He not only is a full time teacher, he works part time at a Taco Bell to make extra money for his wife and himself........Since this Virus crisis stuff started Mr. Willard has called on the phone everyone of his Special Needs students at least once a week. He just made this video and has sent it to every one of his Special Needs students..... I am one tough but fair old beloved by my people SOB , but this is a better man than I will ever be..... May God Bless all the Mr. Willards out there..... To Hell with this Virus...... We are gonna beat this damn thing with good men like Mr. Willard taking care of our kids when we cannot be with them.....Yall stay safe and hang in there.....moo

Thanks for sharing this. The world needs more MR. Willards. ❤️

Years ago I got my now 86 year old mom interested in FaceBook. She loves it. Then I convinced her to finally replace her old desktop computer with an iMac/laptop, complete with lessons from me and Apple. She's a whizz now and just yesterday was telling me how proud she was of herself for figuring out how to order her groceries online. I'm more than grateful I pushed her out of her comfort zone back then.

I got my now 88 yr old mom into p.c.’s in 99.....lol...she couldn’t call me anymore as I was busy connected to the internet...the texting and charging and using the benefits of the smart phone is a different story however.

Ok, if you read further in that document, they mean tea towels, not terry dish towels. Terry dish towels are a bad idea! Tea towels are a very tight weight heavy cotton.
