My mother is in a nursing home and has dementia. I am very concerned about her. I cannot take care of her for multiple reasons even though I would like to take care of her. I have not seen her for a month and it is very worrisome. The Nursing home tells me that she is fine, talking and comfortable - if true, I am grateful for that. I do have a worker at the Nursing home that gives me updates several times during the week.

It's quite sad that the virus is brought into some nursing homes. In British Columbia, many care aides worked in several different nursing homes. They spread the virus to the elderly patients and many died.

Do you know whether the aides work in several different care facilities?

For any academics looking to contribute to the "what next" question:

The Revenge of the Real
is an open call for papers, projects, and research related to these urgent topics and how they are now and will continue to affect urban life, systems, and futures.

The Revenge of the Real: Open Call

I remember taking a class on gerontology and urban development, how the baby boomers were going to congregate in large centers to grow old in place.

Now, with the pandemic, we see how vulnerable people who live in a nursing home facility, or assisted living apartment, are really enclosed in an environment ideally suited for passing a virus to everyone. Now, these people are basically locked down in a small cube. With their food brought to them.

I don't think that we have seen the end of this pandemic in the United States, I am not even sure that we have really even reached the beginning.

In these dark scary times my hubby and I do have plenty of needed every day items. Plus my large pantry stays stocked, and this was way before the pandemic.

As an aside:

Before my hubby, and I married over 36 years ago I explained to him the one chore I really hated to do, and that was grocery shopping. He quickly told me he would do the grocery shopping, and he's kept that commitment/promise since the day we married. :)

He is a fantastic grocery shopper too. He often gets me new items to try which I really enjoy.

So we have three large freezers stocked with all types of meats, seafood, and frozen veggies, etc.

The only thing he's ever bought in large quantities is TP, PTs, cleaning supplies, and paper plates since we had many family get togethers before socially distancing which we have been doing for almost a month now. Thank goodness having all of these items already on hand has helped immensely, so much so we have been able to share many of the items with our family, and next door neighbors.

So we could make it for a long time on just what we have on hand now.

Of course he still has to go get milk, bread or something else that expires in a short period of time. Also go to the pharmacy drive thru. They have been great in our area. You can ask them for other shelf items when picking up a prescription, and they will go get it for you, and bring it to the drive thru.

Jmho
We froze a gallon of milk. I removed a cup’s worth because of the expansion. I’ll be interesting to see how it tastes.

No u are not overreacting ilovewings. Your age and health put you at higher risk. The directives are 6 ft. apart. Is anyone overseeing the driving range you could speak to on the sly. At the very least somebody at the range could tell them to stand farther apart.

During these absolutely horrible times, what is the best job??? I am okay at the moment even though I am not a health care person but what about eye doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc. Society is being hammered across the board. Small businesses are suffering, restaurants airline pilots and flight attendants, Hotels and their staff, teachers
are suffering, etc.

Is there a safe type of job during this type of situation?

Unemployment claims processing. Ironically, a job I was working at right after 9/11.

I do not know the answer to that. I never even thought of it before. I know the care aides do not make much money . It is really scary. These folks are in a Nursing home because they need round the clock care but most people don't care about 'old people' even though the Nursing home has residents of all ages.

I think i need some advice-- i posted about this on the wrong thread (Texas)---
my husband is freaking me out--we are in a gated community in Fort Myers Fla--
There is a driving range here -' in the past few evenings my husband has been hitting
golf bakks on the range. There are a couple other older men hitting golf
balls --so my husband and these two men are talking to each othef- i asked him how far apart they are and it is not 6 feet--more like 2-4 feet-- he doesnt see anything wrong
with that situation and i am upset-- we are both in our mid 70s and i have asthma--
i dont know how to handle this but i see this as a threat to my life--i dont consider this time with this virus and all, a time for socializing---am i over reacting?

I don't think so. I would also be upset and worried in that situation.

I don't think that you are over-reacting, but different people view this virus differently. There are 4 siblings in my family. Two are completely self-isolating, and two are carrying on as though little has changed. My children are more careful, but they still continue with many of the usual things they do in life - partially because of work, and partially because they view themselves as unlikely to be seriously effected by the virus.

Can you encourage him to stay 6-8 feet away from his friends, just for you? Maybe point out that if he doesn't do the little things for you, he'll have to figure out how to use the stove.

Just tell him you’re pretty sure there was something he should have been grounded for that you never found out about in his youth. So here’s a belated two weeks of it.

LOL that's awesome

I tried this recently with a half gallon of milk and after thawing slowly in the refrigerator (it took multiple days), it tasted just fine. There was still a little ice in the milk but that was no problem. So we put another half gallon of milk in our freezer the other day.

ETA: the first time I forgot to remove milk from the plastic milk jug before freezing. It did not burst but got sort of swollen and misshapen. With the latest jug, I did remove a cup of milk before freezing.

I'm quite surprised by the information that is circulating in the US about a peak in mid-April, but maybe that is how it will play out. In some Canadian cities, the peak may be in mid-May. If it is not managed, the peak will be in early May.

You might want to inquire about that. Restricting care aides to one senior facility has helped reduce transmission in senior facilities.

My state is supposed to peak 4/20 (based on a week ago) but I think it is further out.
Like everyone else, I want this to be over. Lucky enough to be able to work from home but it has its drawbacks. I am not going to complain too much because I am lucky enough to have a job and I am grateful.

What about washing his clothes?

My cousin split a large plastic yard/trash bag and taped it with duct tape to the door with an opening for food/cds/etc. I read somewhere a plastic shower curtain or liner was used.

Is he going to be ok staying in there for 14 days and not come out? I know for some people it can be difficult.

So many things to think of! He will be fine back there. He is a bit of an introvert (like his mom).

Hey I know Cobol. Thought it had died decades ago.
Ha! My husband graduated in computer science from USL. At that time USL, MIT and NASA had the same computer system. The students had to schedule a slot (sometimes in the middle of the night) to use the key punch machines. Those were the days.
Maybe you and my husband can volunteer. I sent a text to my dear friend who is our state senator telling them to start contacting retirees to volunteer to get the unemployment claims processed.
