Jacksonville beaches reopen in Florida as states begin easing stay-at-home restrictions - CNN

The scene at Jacksonville Beach wasn't one of caution in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. Crowds cheered and flooded the beach when police took the barriers down. People were seen swimming, biking, surfing, running and fishing.

Social distancing seemed to be the last thing on anyone's mind Friday. Some residents told CNN not being able to go to the beach was "torture." People were out with their towels, coolers and sunbathing. There were very few masks.

Beaches will be open from 6 to 11 a.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. daily with some restrictions, according to Jacksonville's website. Recreational activities such as running, biking, hiking and swimming will be permitted during this soft reopening, the city's website said.

There seems to be info that living and travelling in close confines make the spread of this virus much easier. Evidence of most spread and cases appears to be in care homes, cruise ships, military aircraft carriers, apartments, high population density cities, mass transit etc. Things will have to change for the future. MOO.

Yes. People here have mostly been very compliant about staying home and respecting social distancing. So that has reduced the R0 to under 1 now. The reason Irish people took the social distancing measures very seriously from the beginning was that our health system was already notoriously overstretched before Covid-19 and an Italy-type situation in our hospitals was absolutely possible here and everyone knew it. Thankfully that hasn't happened.
Unfortunately while this coronavirus has mostly been suppressed in the general population, our nursing homes have been horribly affected. So that's the priority now: to try to eradicate it in care home settings.

Very interesting. We have rural areas here in USA who seem to resent/resist prevention measures, yet some of those rural areas lack hospital capacity to serve the community if/when the virus hits there.

I wish the messages that social distancing works were broadcast more loudly - people do have the power to make a difference.

I think we're being tracked anyway. How else are they coming up with statistics (supplied from cell phone carriers) as to how well we are following stay at home mandates?

I can't back this up other than being from NJ, but I would say it has a higher density than NY, but a lower density than Manhatten. Also, two of the worst cities in the country -- Newark and Camden, are in NJ. And it's just across a river from two more -- NYC and Philly.

Yes NJ has the second highest population density in the states. Here's a link. I was just looking at this myself.

I think the economic recovery will be slow as people will be tentative to spend, be in groups, travel, etc. I do think recovery will happen, though.

I hope everyone behaves and adheres to social distancing. I think going to the beach sounds like it could work - but if they have to close because people break the rules, it will be a depressing blow.

It's already announced that beaches will be closed here this summer. I'm sure the fact that people here take public transportation to the beaches was a factor in that decision. Pools are closed too, though I would think the chlorine would kill the virus. I personally am fine not going to the beach and pool, but it's going to be a tough summer in the city without them.

Fire hydrants can be safely tapped by the fire department so water isn't wasted but people will open them on their own, I'm guessing, which can be a problem for water pressure. Playgrounds are already closed, libraries closed, museums closed. So many public places to stay cool outside of home are closed for the summer....really feeling for families with kids.

At least the parks remain open for solo/household member exercise.

I think back yard pools will be big sellers this year. We gave ours to our son and his family to set up at the new house. If a family has room for it and can afford it, I think it's a wise choice for this summer. My grandkids live in the pool.

I cannot believe they opened the beaches in Jacksonville:
stupid doesn't even begin to describe it--- irresponsible is one word that comes to mind: SMH- I mean really, who is going to wear a mask on the beach?

Do you have a link for that scenario?

If it didn’t, we would not have to use care in how we remove our masks, being careful not to touch the outside, and we would not have to wash those masks. Yet we’ve devoted page after page to dealing with cloth masks.

I think back yard pools will be big sellers this year. We gave ours to our son and his family to set up at the new house. If a family has room for it and can afford it, I think it's a wise choice for this summer. My grandkids live in the pool.

That sounds fun.

City kids, like in my neighborhood, don't have backyards. Playgrounds, pools, beaches closed.

My daughter just reminded me that the city pools will be closed because of budget.

I think we're going to see many services cut because there is HUGE loss of revenue now and lots and lots (and lots!) of unexpected expenses for the city.

Tough times. We'll get through them.
