The 'people of Walmart' sure don't get it. I had to pick up an order from the tower located a few feet from the front door. Right next to the tower is the self check out section. People were packed in there like a can of sardines and maybe 2 out of 20 were wearing masks. That place is a Petri dish.

I ran by the liquor store this afternoon to grab a couple of bottles of wine and the couple behind me at the cash register stood about 6 inches behind me, unmasked. I was so uncomfortable! After I paid and turned around the leave, I asked the lady to please step back so I could walk around them safely. She looked at me like I was crazy. I felt like i was in the twilight zone.

“Cuomo said nearly 84% of the hospitalized cases were people who were not commuting to work through car services, personal cars, public transit or walking. He said a majority of those people were either retired or unemployed. Overall, some 73% of the admissions were people over age 51.

He said the information shows that those who are hospitalized are predominantly from the downstate area in or around New York City, are not working or traveling and are not essential employees. He also said a majority of the cases in New York City are minorities, with nearly half being African American or Hispanic. “
————-

•Not commuting because retired or unemployed
•Over the age of 51 (who the heck can afford to retire at 51 without social security?)
•Not venturing outside much

Does this mean each person lives alone? And has their food brought to them since they rarely venture out?

Or does that mean they live with someone else that also was literally at home?

Or did these people live with others that were not working from home, used public transportation, etc?

There’s not enough information.

So if we stay at home and don’t go anywhere - we will still get it according to this article?
I think there are some clues in the above:

It shows that 66% of new admissions were from people who had largely been sheltering at home.
Most new Covid-19 hospitalizations in New York state are from people who were staying home and not venturing much outside, a “shocking” finding, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.

So there was some outside travels and errands, etc...and we don't know if they masked up or gloved up or socially distanced themselves when doing so.

Nor do we know if they had roommates or partners that were out and about and working, etc.

maybe except now we're also hearing about children with some weird inflammatory condition that comes with covid which seems to put them at more risk
But from what has been linked, it does not ALWAYS include Covid in the diagnosis. It said MANY of the victims of this new illness had Covid19 at one time, but not all.

So I am not sure it is totally connected to CV.

A child in my daughter's preschool ended up with Kawasaki illness when she was 5. It came at her out of the blue. There is a lot of controversy and speculation about how and why it appears.

How do you get Kawasaki disease?
It can also cause problems with lymph nodes, skin, and the lining of a child's mouth, nose, and throat. Scientists haven't found an exact cause for Kawasaki disease. It might be linked to genes, viruses, bacteria, and other things in the world around a child, such as chemicals and irritants.Mar 1, 2020

Kawasaki Disease: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, & Treatment
www.webmd.com › children › what-is-kawasaki-disease

Is Kawasaki disease viral or bacterial?
The symptoms of Kawasaki disease are similar to those of an infection, so bacteria or a virus may be responsible. But so far a bacterial or viral cause hasn't been identified. As Kawasaki disease isn't contagious, it can't be passed from one person to another.

Is Kawasaki disease hereditary?
A predisposition to Kawasaki disease appears to be passed through generations in families, but the inheritance pattern is unknown. Children of parents who have had Kawasaki disease have twice the risk of developing the disorder compared to the general population.Mar 3, 2020

Kawasaki disease - Genetics Home Reference - NIH

How do you prevent Kawasaki disease?
It's very important for children on high-dose aspirin to get the annual flu vaccine to help prevent this viral illness. That's because there's a small risk of a rare condition called Reye syndrome in children who take aspirin during a viral illness.

What organs does Kawasaki disease affect?
It can affect the whole body, including the blood vessels of the heart (coronary arteries). The cause of Kawasaki disease is unknown. Without treatment, affectedchildren are at higher risk of developing problems with the coronary arteries. Other areas of the heart may also be affected.

Oh yuk, Katy!
How does heated lettuce taste?
No thanks---I'll stay home and make my own.
Oh, I usually get the chicken quesadilla, no lettuce, so I can heat it up. I wouldn't order anything right now that I couldn't nuke before taking a bite....

really I thought they all had tested positive for the virus
In this article, I saw the following statistics:
of the 15 with Kawasaki symptoms, 4 tested active cases of Covid19, and 6 tested positive for previous cases....5 did not have Covid

"Fifteen children in New York City have been hospitalized for what officials called a “multi-system inflammatory syndrome” that the local health department is investigating as a possible consequence of a Covid-19 infection. Doctors in Europe have recently reported similar cases — the latest potential twist in the coronavirus pandemic.

The children in New York, ages 2 to 15, had high fevers and elevated levels of inflammatory markers, signs that are common in shock and an acute pediatric heart condition called Kawasaki disease, the city’s health department said Monday. The patients, who were hospitalized from April 17 to May 1, also showed symptoms including rash, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Five of the children had to be placed on ventilators; none have died.

Only four of the patients tested positive for an active case of Covid-19, but six of the negative cases showed evidence of a previous infection based on blood tests."

Some kids develop an inflammatory condition, possibly tied to Covid-19

So I am not certain it is totally reliant upon CV19. I think it may be connected, as in the child's immune system is compromised so they get both?

I agree. But even more so now. I wear gloves and wash my cucumbers with soap and water before I peel them. I never used to do that.
O/T I'm a vegan too but I'm a bad vegan because............um.................I CHEAT!
But I figure eating vegan 90% of the time is 90% better than not at all.
Haaaaa, sounds like my daughter's boyfriend. He converted to Veganism because she cooks them delicious meals and he feels better eating her 'clean cooking' as she calls it. But he does admit to cheating when he goes out with his brothers, lol

I do wonder if people's eating habits affect their ability to evade the illness.

‘It’s irresponsible’: Washington state sees sudden rise in COVID parties

Mario Koran

...
You can call them BYOC parties. That’s bring your own COVID-19.

Health officials in Walla Walla, Washington, are admonishing the sudden rise in so-called “COVID-19 parties” where non-infected guests mingle with those who have tested positive for the virus, ostensibly in hopes of speeding up the process of catching, and overcoming, the virus.

“Walla Walla County health officials are receiving reports of COVID-19 parties occurring in our community, where non-infected people mingle with an infected person in an effort to catch the virus,” the county said in a press release Tuesday.
...
“We don’t know when it is happening. It’s after the fact that we hear from cases. We ask about contacts, and there are 25 people because: ‘We were at a COVID party’.” She added: “It’s unacceptable. It’s irresponsible.”

Washington state, hit early and hard by the coronavirus, has tallied 15,185 cases and 834 deaths that have been attributed to the coronavirus.
...
The idea isn’t wholly original. In years past, parents have brought children to so-called Pox parties, where children are deliberately exposed to others believed to have chicken pox.

Concerns of intentional self-infection have surfaced as health authorities around the world consider the concept of “immunity passports”, which could enable those who test positive for COVID-19 antibodies to return to work more quickly.

But DeBolt says the inherent risk of intentionally exposing anyone to infection is compounded with COVID-19, in part because scientists don’t fully understand whether someone can be reinfected by the virus.

I wanted to know if they had A/C or lived in a communal building after hearing that. That's weird to me. What about post (mail) ?

Were they washing there FFV and groceries? Were they going grocery and other shopping (Walmart?) Had they had any visitors? Did they use masks if they went out?

Australia to join 'first movers' conference
As Australia prepares to loosen restrictions, it is also keeping in touch with other countries doing the same.

The Morrison Government has joined a small group of so-called "first mover" nations which have been relatively successful in suppressing the virus.

Essentially, they're trading notes about the best way to re-open after the first wave of the coronavirus.

The group includes Israel, Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, New Zealand and Greece.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will join a meeting of the leaders from the group tonight.

Swedens death rate is less than several European countries that are in lockdown including Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK, Italy , Spain and is very similar to Ireland. There strategy certainly has not been any worse anyway. I also notice the article said half their deaths have been in care homes too. This is a big problem in Europe and the US. Sweden did lockdown their care homes too, I noticed.
Yes, people living at Swedish care homes have been hard hit by the corona virus, but these are often more ill than others in their age group.
In a study on April 28, 90% of all deaths in Covid-19were 70 years or older. Of these 50% lived in care homes, and 26% had care in their own home.
Of people with confirmed Covid-19, 39% were living in care homes, and 27% had home care. If comparing these numbers to the number of people in care homes or having home care, 4% of those in care homes had a Covid-19 infection, an 1% of those with care help in their homes.
Hälften av de avlidna äldre bodde på särskilt boende
So, yes the numbers of dead and infected are high among those in care homes, and with home care, but when compare those to the number of people getting care, the number is still low.
The care homes in my Region appears to have managed the situation well, a soon as the first case was discovered, all visits was banned, (as well as all visits to patients at hospital wards). We have had 2 deaths in Covid-19, one of them in a care home. In the local news I have only seen a report of only one more case of Covid-19 in a care home, so unless I've missed something, we have only had two cases of Covid-19 in care homes here. Of course, the danger in far from over, the virus won't disappear, and it will be around for a long time. The longer it takes, the more difficult will it be to keep people in self-isolation.

The head of Sweden's no-lockdown coronavirus plan said the country's heavy death toll 'came as a surprise'

Hi FrostOwl,

This is the article that was originally posted and mentions half the deaths are in nursing homes.

"Tegnell said in late April that at least half of the country's deaths had been in nursing homes.

"We really thought our elderly homes would be much better at keeping this disease outside of them then they have actually been," he told Noah.

Tegnell has previously said it is "very difficult" to know whether a lockdown could have prevented more deaths, especially because so many deaths have been in nursing homes."

Hope you are feeling better.

I thought one of the conditions of bail is that you don't commit any crimes while out on bail, which is essentially what she promised to do as soon as released. Should they have let her go, and just arrested her again when she broke the law Again?

Maybe they could have assisted her to apply for a wage subsidy and/or some other financial assistance, or helped her find a temporary job placement, or provided a referral to the food bank. It's possible that the woman was just beligerant, but if her account is true, she simply needed money to buy food. It's too bad this story ever got so bad that it hit the press.

This is certainly one of the very sad stories out there. There has been a real increase, so important to let parents know early or pre-symptoms. But I sure hope it stays rather small.

Taoiseach tells the Dáil it is 'very possible' that Covid-19 was present in Ireland last year or in early January

(Ireland)

TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR has said “it is very possible” that Covid-19 could have been in Ireland last year or in early January of this year.

Speaking in the Dáil, he said any future review of the data will give more detail.

He said it should not be presumed that the virus came here directly from China or from Italy.

There is some evidence that the virus was in France last year, he said, making reference to the country retro-confirming some cases in December.

He said this makes sense due to the connections between France and China, mentioning frequent flights.

He said Ireland and France obviously have close connections also.

His comments come as the Department of Health has confirmed an error in a report published last Friday which recorded a death from coronavirus in a nursing home occurring as early as mid-February.

A census of mortality across all residential care facilities in Ireland was carried out over the weekend of 18 April in order to gain a clearer picture of mortality in Ireland’s long-term residential care facilities.

The report was published on the Department website on Friday last.

A laboratory-confirmed death in a nursing home was recorded as having occurred between 17 – 23 February, over one week before public health officials confirmed the country’s first case of Covid-19 and over one month before Ireland’s first confirmed death in a long-term residential care facility.

The Taoiseach also confirmed today that the pandemic payment support of €350 per week will be extended beyond June.

In New Zealand we were encouraged to assume we might be infected, even if asymptomatic. So staying at home, social distancing and wearing face masks in public were ways to keep other people safe. ... It's worked for us.
Snipped

It sure has worked for you in New Zealand! Excellent example for the rest of us to follow.

I don't think the link between those issues [children with some weird inflammatory condition and covid] has been established. jmo

I'm not sure that it has been established either, but there is some strong evidence that there could be a link. It's all so new, and such a steep learning curve for the medical community. All the world will be watching for more information regarding a potential link.

In the meantime, when it comes to our children's safety, it would be prudent to act as if a link were certain. The medical community is ahead of our gov't policy makers so I pray that their warnings are not ignored. In this instance, I hope there is adequate protection in place for children, and that we are not throwing them to the wolves in our desperate attempt to reopen the economy.

On a personal note, during our zoomfest on Sunday, the two medical doctors in our family were fully aware of pediatric differences in CoV-19 cases. They believe children have been largely protected because schools and day cares are closed.
