This free children’s book is helping parents explain COVID-19

I saw the gal who wrote this book on tv, she was fantastic. This children's book explains how "Bad King Covid" can be "beat" by washing hands, wearing a mask...I thought that it was great.

Kids can feel more empowered, and also realize that they can have control over Coronavirus.

I have been so impressed with the children, even toddlers, wearing their pink Princess or Superman masks!

Thank you for this book! It will help my 4 year old grandson. I believe he has some fear although his mom does try to talk to him. It is still not easy for the little ones. He asked Mommy one day that if he might die since he was coughed on by another child (even though that happend before this virus, he remembered) I am sure there are things that his ears hear on news at times but I am thinking this book might help him feel a little more in control and not so helpless.

''But behind the scenes, it was a much different story, one of significant delays by China and considerable frustration among WHO officials over not getting the information they needed to fight the spread of the deadly virus, The Associated Press has found.

Despite WHO's praise, China in fact sat on releasing the genetic map, or genome, of the virus for more than a week after three different government labs had fully decoded the information. Tight controls on information and competition within the Chinese public health system were to blame, according to dozens of interviews and internal documents.

Chinese government labs only released the genome after another lab published it ahead of authorities on a virologist website on Jan. 11. Even then, China stalled for at least two more weeks on providing WHO with detailed data on patients and cases, according to recordings of internal meetings held by the UN health agency through January — all at a time when the outbreak arguably might have been dramatically slowed.

Recordings obtained by the AP suggest WHO officials were lauding China in public because they wanted to coax more information out of the government. Privately, they complained in meetings the week of Jan. 6 that China was not sharing enough data to assess how effectively the virus spread between people or what risk it posed to the rest of the world, costing valuable time''.

Germany's Covid-19 spikes present fresh challenges as lockdown lifts
''So far, Göttingen’s coronavirus crisis management team said it was not clear where the infection originated, but it has established that a meeting by a group of young men in a shisha bar who had attended the family parties played a part in spreading the virus beyond the family groups. The city’s six shisha bars, which according to the current regulations should have been closed, were controlled as a result. One of the bars that was found to be open to customers was subsequently closed by health inspectors.

Authorities have complained they have been hindered by a lack of cooperation from some of those involved.
Of 90 people who were asked to come for tests only 15 initially turned up. Those who failed to attend will be notified by post, and will face a fine if they refuse to be tested, they said''.

Wuhan doctor at whistleblower's hospital dies from coronavirus

A Wuhan doctor who worked with coronavirus whistleblower Li Wenliang died of the virus last week, state media reported Tuesday, becoming China's first COVID-19 fatality in weeks.

Hu Weifeng, a urologist at Wuhan Central Hospital, died on Friday after being treated for COVID-19 and allied issues for more than four months, state broadcaster CCTV said.

He is the sixth doctor from Wuhan Central Hospital to have died from the virus, which emerged in the central Chinese city late last year.
...
The official death toll in the country of 1.4 billion people stands at 4,634 -- well below the number of fatalities in less populous nations.

Wuhan Central Hospital has yet to give a formal statement on Hu's death. In early February it said some 68 staff members had contracted coronavirus.

Hu's condition became a national concern after Chinese media showed images of him with his skin turned black due to liver damage.
...
Fellow doctor Yi Fan showed similar symptoms, but recovered and has since been discharged from hospital.

The death of their colleague Li Wenliang in February triggered a national outpouring of grief and rage against the government as he documented his final days on social media.

UK coronavirus death toll nears 50,000, latest official figures show

UK coronavirus death toll nears 50,000, latest official figures show

The UK’s death toll from Covid-19 is on the brink of exceeding 50,000, according to the latest official figures, confirming Britain’s status as one of the world’s worst hit countries by the pandemic that has claimed around 375,000 lives globally.

The Office for National Statistics said that in England and Wales alone, 43,837 people died from Covid-19 up to 22 May, an increase of 2,589 on the previous week when the total stood at 41,220.

The death rate is continuing to fall and reached its lowest level in the last seven weeks. But when taken with fatalities recorded in Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as more up-to-date daily NHS figures counting deaths from coronavirus in hospitals in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland the total reaches 49,324.
When deaths in care homes and other settings are taken into account for the last week, the coronavirus death toll in the UK is likely to have already broken the 50,000 mark.

Leaked WHO files show China 'delayed releasing important information' about virus

Leaked WHO files show China 'delayed releasing important information' about virus

...
China delayed releasing important coronavirus information during the early days of the outbreak, according to leaked WHO documents and recordings of WHO meetings obtained by the Associated Press (AP).
The delay led to frustration for officials in the World Health Organisation (WHO), even as they publicly praised China for its transparency.

The country waited more than one week before publishing the genome of the novel coronavirus on 11 January, despite the fact three different government labs had fully sequenced the genetic code.
...
"Tight controls on information and competition within the Chinese public health system were to blame, according to dozens of interviews and internal documents," AP reported.

And for two weeks afterwards, China also delayed providing the WHO with more detailed data on patients and cases, according to the recordings, making it difficult for officials to judge whether the virus could spread between people, and what risk it might mean for the rest of the world.
One WHO official reportedly complained: "We're going on very minimal information. It's clearly not enough for you to do proper planning."

AP said: "WHO staffers debated how to press China for gene sequences and detailed patient data without angering authorities, worried about losing access and getting Chinese scientists into trouble."
...
On 3 January, the Chinese National Health Commission issued a secret notice ordering labs studying the virus to destroy their samples or send them to approved institutes.

The notice also banned labs from publishing information about the virus without the approval of the government.

60,000 just gathered in Houston.

This is, as we know, just one of the many, many huge mass gatherings that have happened this week in over 40 cities.

Game over, moo.

The stress of 2020 probably isn't helping. My hair falls out twice as quick when I'm stressed. I'm surprised I'm not bald right now. Jmo
And I'm nearly 3 weeks without nicotine. Just a little stress.

But, yeah, I did lose a lot of hair last time I was on these meds. So much, in fact, that I had to cut it all off.

That article/headline seems bizarre to me, since the US has been generally seeing between 20,000 and 30,000 new cases a day all along*. So if we've DROPPED to 19,000 a day, that is good news!

Methinks someone wrote that article without any context, wanting it to seem like a dramatic increase?

*based on the 1point3acres site, which I look at daily.

Yea, I wonder how many people are going to die because people are gathering in large numbers during a pandemic.

We got to see our grandchildren today. I think we're the only grandparents we know who sat there all masked up the entire time. We're preening like peacocks over being so responsible.

We sat in the shade at our daughter's house. The 2 year old had water table, wading pool, etc to occupy her. We held the 3 month old and were happy to refrain from smooching his precious head.

It was a lovely visit. 2 year old has started chattering away in the past 3 months and is very entertaining.

My mom's cousin just died of COVID. It hurts my heart to think of how he may have suffered. It's a reminder that this is far from over. Hopefully it will serve as a reminder to my mom that she needs to back away if someone stops to talk to her while she's in her yard. She's been making me nervous lately.
