So I assume in order to get into this rally it's first come first serve? Due to the fact folks are camping out for days? The fact that they are camping out for days is a major concern itself. Virus could be circulating even before these folks get inside. Asshats!

They're camping out so they can be closer to the front, and perhaps one of those cheerleaders that stand behind him during the rallies.

Well, good for them. Not.

Per the article, because if she had tested positive, she wouldn't have been able to be with her son in the hospital. She would have needed two negative tests, and he was too ill for her to go through all that and would have died without her being there (although I don't know whether she was actually there when he died).

yep
and so she put others in the hospital and anywhere else she went at risk

I'm shocked the Hospital allowed her in

I'm still uncertain whether this innate selfishness is primarily an American trait, or just a human trait.

I put the groceries on the counter then run out on the deck and strip. Shoes and clothes lay wherever they fell. Run in and wash my face, neck, hands, arms and ankles. Clean all groceries with wipes and put away when they dry. clothes go in the washer after dark. I was really embarrassed a few weeks ago when the Fedex man walked up on the deck and my clothes and shoes were thrown half-hazard on the floor.

good heavens, don’t be embarrassed about that... can you imagine what HE has been told to do with his delivery uniform?? I’m sure it’s one and the same - treat everything like it’s radioactive.

So question for you all. I have just recently begun venturing out into stores. Prior it was all delivery, grocery included. I have now made three trips. Masked, of course. And hand sanitizer before entering the car after as well as wiping down my groceries. These are the only trips inside of places we have made and the only time I have been within 6 feet of another human. ( we did a driveway visit with the family but over 6 feet away) Anyways....each time I had a small panic attack, mostly due to being overwhelmed by actually being near someone and being inside. In MI we are asked to wear masks in grocery stores but there is always that one that does not and those are the ones that love to get close and show you just how NOT worried they are.
So on to my question: I wear a mask but what about the rest of my body? Do those of you that are very careful and worried about this virus cover the rest of your body and undress and shower after? Please don't call me paranoid! I honestly want to know as I am sure if the germs find their way to a mask then they must find there way to other areas. Say my elbow or knee? I get home and touch it with my clean hands.... What do you all think and how are you handling this? Its a new world this shopping thing and I am almost to the point of going back to grocery delivery...

I thought the ‘disinfect all your clothes immediately’ recommendation, was for people who had to spend a whole day working outside the home. Personally, when I run short errand bursts, it depends.

If I forget and lean against the elevator wall, then those clothes go into the wash basket immediately.

If it’s something that I’ve sat on a bus or a subway in, ditto.

if it’s clothes I’ve used simply to walk the street for exercise, and which didn’t touch any surfaces? It depends. Generally I’ll wear those a few times for walks before I consign them to the wash. I did give up completely on one pair of older sneakers altogether, consigning them to the trash, because I was feeling icky about their soles no matter how many times I had scrubbed the bottoms with Lysol wipes.

Something I never thought my husband and I would do - wash and/or disinfect all groceries. Different world.

So... my county - Jefferson in Washington State and thus my town- is now eligible to begin Phase 3. That means gatherings of 50 or fewer people are okay, restaurants are open at 75% capacity, movie theaters are open at 50% capacity, gyms, pools and rec centers are open at 50% capacity and libraries, retail stores, museums, camping and government buildings are open.

However, older people (65+) and immuno-comprimised people are advised to continue to stay home. Today a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners met to approve or reject the move. No word yet.

Public Health Officer Tom Locke recommended the county move forward with a full Phase 3 variance application without restrictions.

“Risk can never be eliminated; it can only be controlled,” Locke wrote in his recommendation. “The time will never be better than it is now to further open businesses and community activities. The warming weather and greater amount of time spent outdoors reduces the risk of virus transmission.”
Jeff Co now eligible for Phase 3

I'm torn. On the one hand several restaurants and stores have gone under, which is devastating to a town as small as mine. OTOH, my husband is deeply concerned about sitting in a restaurant for an extended period of time (as opposed to going into a retail store for 15 minutes or so).

So what to do, what to do? I promised my husband that I won't go inside any restaurant with my gaming friends and instead I'll pick up curbside service and bring the food home. It's a compromise I can live with but the thought of being wary for possibly the next 9 - 12 months is depressing.

Never would I have thought my life - or the lives of my loved ones - would change so drastically. I can't even think about the next visit I'll have with my grandkids in Florida; twice I've caught horrible viruses while flying on a commercial plane. IOW, it sucks. :(

Worth consideration ...

My area reopened today and I am sad to have no intentions of going out to a bar or restaurant anytime soon. And here is my reason:

The COVID-19 is transmitted via respiratory droplets. We exhale about 100,000 microscopic droplets per minute.

In my many years of healthcare experience, I've known that patients with airborne transmitted infections were admitted to negative pressure respiratory isolation rooms. Upon entry, we gowned, gloved and put on a mask. And upon exit, those items were disposed of at the door.

All of that said, it's unlikely these establishments will resist the temptation of earning a larger profit and abide by strict social distancing practice, and adequately sanitize the area between patrons. And, I don't even want to think about the possibility of infectious droplets making their way through HVAC systems.

Sources:
Negative pressure room
Droplets in exhaled breath

I would love to go out to eat, but my knowledge and my gut is telling me that it is too much of a risk. So I am open to any information that points to the contrary.

eta: oops grammar
You forgot to mention the danger posed by employees. No way to know for certain if they have the virus or are carriers. Five restaurants closed in Phoenix; one died in Tucson - virus employees.

Same here, @Trino. Twilight zone. Unbelievable. And we can’t get casual about it as time goes on and let down our guard, as tiresome as it is. Even if others scoff, my husband and I will remain vigilant...for the long haul.

I’m really disappointed and angry that the President is going to hold this rally.
But what scares me even more is if the virus really starts ramping up again, whenever that may be, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on to advise people to shelter in place, etc.

Our concern about asymptomatic employees is what keeps us home from our two favorite restaurants, even though they have outside dining. It’s a summer ritual, but we wouldn’t enjoy ourselves. We’d like to support them, but our health comes first.

We live in a town of 22,000 that normally attracts about 350,000 visitors each year. The main attraction, live theatre, is closed for the year. Over 100 restaurants depend on those visitors, as do art galleries, shops and area wineries. Our town is expecting to lose $6 million this year because it won’t be collecting hotel and meals taxes. This is on top of reduced visitors in recent summers due to wildfire smoke. Already stores are going out of business. Our local hospital and regional medical center have lost millions. Time will tell how these financial reversals will affect the quality of life visitors and residents like us have enjoyed for many years. It’s depressing, to see these changes and know how badly it will impact so many local families. But without our health, we all have nothing.

I had to think about it for a few minutes. If my son was dying, and that was the last time I would ever be able to be with him....it would be very difficult to have your focus on being altruistic and completely self actualized.

Not completely giving her a pass...but...

@MsMarple I think that the reopening process, just means that there are plenty of ICU beds available now.

Is it worth it?

Given the mass events of tens of thousands of people that have been encouraged over the past few weeks, I’m not sure there are ANY political figures who actually have a leg to stand on should they want to shut things down again when things get really ugly.

However, I also sincerely doubt we will see another widespread shut down like what we saw in early spring. The average American won’t stand for it.

Can you imagine the anxious state that the health care workers must be in? They will be expected to risk their lives for those who don't give a twit about them.

I am a healthcare provider. We are already risking our lives for people who didn’t give a twit about us. In my area alone, we’ve had tens of thousands of people gathered for an indisputable worthy cause for weeks. But make no mistake, those gatherings are going to cost lives. It won’t just be lives of those who participated, as anyone they come into contact if infected will also be at risk.

This rally is no different really. It will cost lives. I have no doubt about that. And just like some who gathered to protest felt the cause was worthy enough to die for or kill others for when they spread the virus, obviously some feel a political rally is also worth dying for or killing others when they spread it.

I don’t begin to understand the logic of either group, and I do sometimes deeply resent having to risk myself and my family for inherently selfish people. But I do think at the end of the day, it is hugely hypocritical for some to suddenly appear very concerned about a rally with just under 20k attendees when protests of 20k or 60k or even 100k plus people didn’t garner the same disgust. It’s incongruent to me. All IMO.
