Welcome to 2020, the year of shaming. Goodness. :( jmo
Well, why not? It works. We got millions to quit smoking by publicly shaming and shunning them when education campaigns failed. It's called taking the low road. :p

Governments in Nigeria and Senegal are the latest in West Africa to ease restrictions on internal travel and reopen schools.

Senegal’s state of emergency and curfew, imposed on March 23rd will be lifted tomorrow. Air borders will reopen from July 15, with international flights resuming under a raft of health protocols set to be announced.

Officials in Nigeria have also lifted bans on interstate travel and allowed domestic flights to resume. Universities and secondary schools will reopen for final-year students too to sit exams while primary schools and nurseries remain closed.

Whatever works. I don't have problem with shaming people into doing the right thing.

Why not go the whole hog and tar and feather them and march them down the high street. This is before the court action ?

There "won’t be social distancing" at Mount Rushmore July 4th event attended by Trump, governor says

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said those who are concerned about the event — which is actually taking place on July 3 — should stay home.

"We told those folks that have concerns that they can stay home, but those who want to come and join us, we'll be giving out free face masks, if they choose to wear one," she said.

"We won’t be social distancing. We’re asking them to come, be ready to celebrate, to enjoy the freedoms and the liberties .....”

The website Recreation.gov warns: “This event will be attended by thousands. Participants will be in close contact for an extended amount of time, please plan accordingly.”
A bit of levity: I have 2 children (well, young adults) at home and rather than saying the words I want to say when I read something outrageous like this, I've somehow taken to saying "Zoinks" instead. Long story short, I sound like I'm stuck in an episode of Scooby Doo. :D

Is smoking illegal now in the states?

Last month, the CDC estimated that the fatality rate for those with COVID-19 and showing symptoms to be in the range of 0.2% to 1% with a best estimate of 0.4%. The CDC also estimated that 20% to 50% of those with COVID-19 would be asymptomatic. That meant that in reality, the CDC was estimating an overall COVID-19 Infection Fatality Rate in the range of 0.1% to 0.8%, with a “best estimate” of 0.26%.

The corresponding CDC best estimate of Infection Fatality Rate is 0.03% for those under 50 years old, 0.13% for those between 50 to 64 years old is, and 0.85% for those 65 and older. Of course, these estimates do not take into account comorbidities, and given the majority of US deaths have been skilled nursing home residents and other info about those who have died from COVID-19, we know that comorbidities have a major impact on the fatality rate.
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

More recently, a Stanford University study based on data of seroprevalence studies, estimated COVID-19 Infection fatality rates in a range of 0.02% to 0.86% with a median of 0.26%). Among people under 70 years old, the estimated Infection Fatality Rates ranged from 0.00% to 0.26% with median of 0.05%.
The infection fatality rate of COVID-19 inferred from seroprevalence data

A similar study, but focused on Switzerland, estimated an Infection Fatality Rate in the range of just 0.00032% to 0.0016% for those younger than 50, 0.096% to 0.19% for those 50 to 64 years of age and 4.3% to 7.4% for those 65 years of age and older. As for the estimated IFR for those 65 years and older, the authors of this study cautioned that it was likely higher for individuals in assisted care facilities and lower for individuals not in assisted care facilities, but that they did not distinguish the two.

Deloitte in the Netherlands published an analysis of fatality rate estimates, including a study that estimated Infection Fatality Rate of 0.11% for Santa Clara California, and estimated that those under 50 with COVID-19 had less than a 0.1% chance of ICU admission and less than a 0.01% fatality rate. Deloitte estimated a 0.1% IFR for those aged 50 to 59, a 0.4% IFR for those aged 60 to 69, a 2.4% IFR for those aged 70 to 79, and a 6.2% IFR for those aged 80 and above.

What most if not all of the IFR studies seem to dance around is the reality that more than half of COVID-19 deaths have been nursing home residents. Many other countries have had similar issues with nursing home deaths accounting for a substantial portion of overall COVID deaths, and in some cases a substantial majority.

The other reality that goes along with so many COVID-19 deaths being nursing home residents is that those residents already face a very high short-term mortality rate. For example: "According to the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) . . . the mortality rate within the first 12 months after individuals move into a skilled nursing facility is as much as 60 percent. The mortality rate is even higher in the first six months.”

People don’t like to talk about it, which is entirely understandable because it’s a very sensitive topic, but given what we know about the nursing home situation, and the very advanced age of most COVID-19 deaths in this country, it’s a fairly good possibility that a significant portion of Americans, would have died within the 3 to 6 months. It appears that about 55% of US COVID deaths have been nursing home residents, so if we conservatively assume only 50% of those individuals would have died within the next 3 to 6 months, thats still more than 25% of all US COVID deaths. It doesn't seem unreasonable to hypothesize that most of the nursing home residents who have died from COVID-19 those with more likely to have a high short-term mortality rate.

We can't discuss politics, but I find it hard when it comes to covid. Clearly politics play a huge role here.

Number of States Under Tri-State Quarantine Order Doubles; CDC Warns New Surge May Be Beyond Control

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut doubled the number of quarantine-restricted states to 16 Tuesday as the rate of new U.S. COVID infections surges to a level the CDC warns may be beyond the nation's ability to control.

The quarantine order was initially announced last week, a joint effort by Gov. Phil Murphy, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont to protect the progress they've made in fighting coronavirus as more than half of U.S. states wage war anew. It asks travelers to self-isolate for 14 days if coming to the region from states where the seven-day rolling average of positive tests or positive cases exceeds a certain threshold. Violators may face heavy fines.

As of Tuesday, the tri-state area is restricting access to travelers from 16 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

"Our numbers have come way down, probably as much as any American state, but we paid a huge price," Murphy said on "TODAY" Tuesday. "We've gone through hell. The last thing we want to do is go through hell again."

NOT TRUE AT ALL! The dose you are exposed to can make a huge difference in how your body responds and if your immune system is able to fight it off.

"Infectious respiratory diseases spread when a healthy person comes in contact with virus particles expelled by someone who is sick — usually through a cough or sneeze. The amount of particles a person is exposed to can affect how likely they are to become infected and, once infected, how severe the symptoms become."
How much of the coronavirus does it take to make you sick? - STAT

Ok, so why not sign up to be infected with a tiny bit of covid? I'm not buying it.

It is good to see the Houston Mayor and the Governor working together, despite other differences. :)

If this isn't scary, i don't know what is-- this woman states she did everything you are supposed to do but still got the virus--- the only thing i can think of is that there must have been a breach somewhere, or else how do you explain it--- it scares me because i think i do everything right (with an occasional mistake that so far hasn't cost me). Sigh
I’m doing all I can and the neighbor walks out and gets the mail every day. No wipes no leaving it for three day. I have seen helpful neighbors find someone else’s mail in their box and walked over and casually put the mail in another mailbox. Kids grabbing deliveries (yippee Amazon!)! The dog food delivery was interesting because they used a knife to open the outer cardboard and sliced open the actual dog food pouch inside.

After reading articles like this - makes you wonder.....Without testing, how do I know that I don’t have it? Or that I didn’t have it?

I think basically the governor had no choice. Whatever they are claiming, it's clear to me the hospitals in a city like Houston were running out of room to put all the covid patients in.

Antibody testing? Once they finally get reliable tests going.
