Trump claims 99% of US Covid-19 cases are 'totally harmless' as infections surge

Donald Trump has celebrated independence day with a string of false and misleading claims attempting to play down the coronavirus pandemic and warning that China will be “held accountable”.

The number of infections now regularly tops 50,000 per day, higher than in April when the US was in the first grip of infections. Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, warned this week: “I think it’s pretty obvious that we are not going in the right direction.”

And contradicting Fauci and other public health experts, the president offered a wildly optimistic prediction: “We’ll likely have a therapeutic and/or vaccine solution long before the end of the year.” The presidential election is on 3 November.

I would love to know what the WHO are doing with the millions in funding that they have received. Since I know UK government pledged millions to Oxford in their bid to create a vaccine. I'm sure other Leaders are footing the bill in their own searches too. It defies logic to be funding the World Health Organisation for what?? Oh yes, it's for us to then be able to fund our own scientists/universities in their vaccine search and trials! No matter what way I look at it, it makes no sense! X

Oh, well that’s ok then, isn’t it. We’ve all been worried for no reason at all. The one time you need an eye-roll emoticon...

Seeing the News footage from Englands rammed Pubs and streets. I think we can safely say that a re-surge for us is imminent. And will occur sooner rather than later! I know it is their freedom, but it is not like anybody was deprived of beer during Lockdown!
It is also, not like those people "cannot see the trees for the forest".. they know EXACTLY what they are doing! Shameful X

Completely agree. I wonder if this is why I’ve been so on edge the past few days - I can see the tsunami in the not-so-far-off distance and it amazes me that so many are willing to risk their lives (and the lives of their families) for the sake of a trip to the pub.

Funnily enough, the Health Minister is reporting that 'by and large, and despite some contrary footage' everyone behaved quite well in the pubs.

People in England appear to have broadly behaved themselves as pubs reopened this weekend, Britain's health minister Matt Hancock said, adding he was pleased with how the easing of lockdown had gone.
"From what I've seen, although there's some pictures to the contrary, very very largely people have acted responsibly," he told Sky News. "Overall, I'm pleased with what happened yesterday."

COVID-19 is close to losing its epidemic status in the U.S., according to the CDC

This seems significant. @10ofRods could you have a read and let us have your opinion?

"The percentage of coronavirus deaths in the country has been declining for ten straight weeks.

Coronavirus deaths in the country have nearly reached a level where the virus will cease to qualify as an epidemic under Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rules, the federal agency reported on Friday.

The CDC qualifies a disease outbreak as an "epidemic" if the number of deaths attributable to the disease exceeds a certain percentage of total deaths per week. That threshold for pneumonia, influenza and COVID-19 fluctuates slightly depending on the time of year, ranging from around 7% at the height of flu season to around 5% during less virulent months.

CDC data indicate that deaths from those ailments began skyrocketing in the country around the second week of March, hitting a peak around early May and then plummeting quickly after that.

The latest data show that the percentage of deaths in the country attributable to those factors had as of the last week in June reached its lowest point since the end of last year, becoming "equal to the [current] epidemic threshold of 5.9%," the CDC said.

This is sanctioned by Matt Hancock. They are doing nothing wrong by having a pint or two. These businesses and employees have done a tremendous amount of work to open on Super Saturday and deserve all the support they get from the public. Anyone vulnerable or unsure would not be there. We have all been adhering to lockdown for almost 4 months and now it is time to venture out, for those who can. I have seen noone saying the same about France, Spain, Italy or Ireland for example so wonder why you are claiming UK are risking their lives? Have you evidence that it has gone wrong in other European countries that have been in lockdown?

<modsnip: quoted post was removed>

I trust what 10ofRods has to say, as they appear to be very well studied in this area, but here is a link if you want even more info.

A variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is responsible for the still-raging coronavirus pandemic sweeping the world, has been found in multiple studies to have a very tiny mutation in its genetic code. This variant is primarily circulating through Europe and the United States, according to a study released by Scripps Research, and the genetic tweak significantly increases the virus’ ability to infect cells in a host.

Mutation in SARS-CoV-2 ramps up ability to infect cells, makes it more stable: Scripps study- Technology News, Firstpost

Yes, that's the kind of information I was hoping to read about. Information gathered by scientific researchers who have studied the virus and specifics about the mutations. The information about the spikes is particularly interesting.
Thanks for the link.

The downside - directly from the CDC website - says:

Mortality attributed to COVID-19 decreased compared to last week and is currently at the epidemic threshold but will likely increase as additional death certificates are processed.

The deaths in US were 254 yesterday which is a big step in the right direction. If the other article about the strain G614 being less severe is also coming in to play then it is hopeful. Next two weeks seem to be important. IMO.

This graph from your CDC link is really interesting.

But they are risking their lives, and OURS. The News shows one City of London street, with bars open on both sides of road and anybody wanting to walk that particular street, would literally have had to squeeze through the crowd. They were all drinking, which as you know, requires a mask less face. There was a bar maid or glass collector in the footage WITHOUT A MASK and that is not supposed to be happening But after such a lonnng and ardent lockdown, those people threw caution to the wind last night. We have 2 known FACTS that help towards slowing any spread of virus ie. masks and social distancing. And both were non-existent in the footage. Honestly, 4 months of hard work squandered on the 1st night of re-opening. Ludicrous! X

It is pretty depressing information, but more scientific information is always good.

The only thing I agree on is yes you need a mask less face to have a drink. We are opening. There will be risks and transmission but it will be managed. It is clearly not as crowded as all the protests a few weeks ago or the beaches last week.
