I don't think they would need to deliberately court the virus when they are probably encountering it every day anyway.
Well, they certainly don't need to deliberately court the virus, and the 17 doctors probably thought all would be well. However, it shows a mindset that the culture in which they live, does not respect the need for social distancing. Maybe they are encountering it every day, but I doubt it.
Doctors in these parts are as sheltered from the virus as possible. There is a whole team of people to screen clients, starting by phone even before they get to the hospital door, then again at the hospital door, to make sure that both the medical staff and patients with suspected and/or potential cases have PPE and that it is properly worn. Around here, doctors are still conducting their meetings by zoom. It's inconceivable that 17 doctors would be in the same room.
My goodness, getting together like that was completely irresponsible. I'm just shaking my head.
