Don't look at Australia then. We are busy shaming the people that are being ignorant and spreading the virus.

Two 19 year olds who lied to the authorities and took the virus from Victoria into our state of Queensland have their pics plastered all over our morning news.

Queensland now has identified three positive cases - and the testing lines are long, as people want to be tested - due to them walking around for 8 days while covid positive.
And we all know that 3 positive cases can blow out to hundreds .. thousands ... in just a few weeks. Some people in Queensland are calling for them to be jailed (the law doesn't support that - they copped a $4,000 fine each).

Queensland is now likely going to slam its borders closed again .. because they feel that they just cant trust people to do the right thing.

It's been years and years since I was in Australia. Is this mainly directed towards Covid or have people gotten mean over the years? I certainly include the US in that question. I'm kind of shocked at the hostility coming from both sides here. Jmo

How many cases have you had in Queensland?

I don't understand how you interpet 'meanness'. It is anger.

People here are kind and giving. Everyone is doing all they can to help Victoria right now. The virus is nothing to be messed with, so people are angry now.

One of the 19 year old's sister has now tested positive. Subsequently, her whole school has been closed.

There is not going to be any compassion shown towards intelligent but stupid people. They are costing lives.

I just thought yesterday how much better you were looking. Two days in a row with lowered new cases. I hoped you were on the road to improvement. But ... not yet.

Andrews looks very stressed. Jeff Kennett said today that he thinks Andrews needs a break for a little while.

David Frum @davidfrum Jul 29, 2020

City of Toronto and state of Mississippi have about same population: 2.8 mn vs 2.9 million.

On July 27, Toronto reported 1 COVID case. That same day, Mississippi reported 1,342 cases and 42 deaths.

slowpoke - That's ridiculous! What state are you in? I'm in South Carolina and I took a test on the morning of July 18 and I'm still waiting for results too! Have you had any symptoms? Do you figure you're negative at this point?

Glad to hear your husband was negative!

Thank you for your concern! I’m in SoCal. I detailed my minor symptoms in this post:
Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #70

I do expect I will be negative since my husband tested negative, as he was the one who was potentially exposed. But then I will be puzzled as to what caused me to not feel well.

From what I have noticed, it does not seem political in Australia. It does seem to be a bit more political in the UK, but not as bad as the US.

Australia is very political, the response to covid has been political as well with states fighting with each other and with federal

I have relatives in Queensland in their 70's and they have not long come out of lockdown, so I hope they close the border. I do hope it can be contained, but I don't see the point of blaming and shaming because it will just lead to further people clamming up completely and not sharing contacts. cooperation and anonymity is needed instead IMO.

How do they know that 30% are false positives?
They don't know if the 30% are false negative or false positive. So the health department is counting all the disputed tests as false positive to "err on the side of caution"

Hmm ... and yet, South Australia this week just sent 50 more nurses to Melbourne, all volunteers.
Nurses that can't come home again without going through strict quarantine first.

'Up to' 1,000 ADF personnel have been sent by the Feds to assist with monitoring the quarantining and with the testing.
1,000 personnel who can't go home again without strict quarantine first.

I can't blame anyone for putting Andrews under the spotlight for his poor hotel quarantine system that started this whole spreading mess. But we are all still helping Victoria anyway.

In the UK, the opposition has cooperated well I think in general and the devolved administations have done well too. Havent always agreed with each other but its worked. We have had a good furlough and self employed financial scheme IMO. Now we just have to contain these few outbreaks at workplaces and holiday destinations.

Numbers had gone down, in the last couple of days, and now this:

Australia's Victoria state to report more than 700 COVID-19 cases, 13 deaths - local media

Australia's Victoria state to report more than 700 COVID-19 cases, 13 deaths - local media

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's second-most populous state will report more than 700 COVID-19 infections and as many as 13 deaths, local media reported on Thursday.

Authorities in Victoria state, which has been struggling to contain COVID-19 throughout July, said earlier this week the latest outbreak may have peaked.

The number of new cases will hit a daily record high on Thursday, however, The Herald Sun reported.

My opinion it is a bit more political in the US, I agree. Some people are angry because of seemingly stupid actions that affect others. Australia idea How can things get better unless people are punished and obey what they are told? Consequences of punishent are harsh but so are the consequences of innocent people getting sick. People are angry, fear of Covid and the unknown is certainly no fun. No in the US we can't count on all people to make safe choices for us all either. We had a bad experience from the early days start and are still being pulled in every direction with what we are told. Feels like there really is no way it can get better. We could put blame on certain Covid party goers and so forth. How far will we get with that at the point we are at? Seems there were fines in some states, doubt that helped us all. Now we must quarantine if we travel from certain states to others. This is just unreal! Yet we are opening schools and so on. Most of us are lost of what the best thing is to do. Certainly spreaders are not going to be fined unless it is an intentional act or threat, knowingly or threatening have the virus and try to spread it. I think that is fair since it is the US I live in. Things will move on so we wait and see.

I wish I could see your morning news. For the tone, the wording, the way they're handling it on air.

8 days! People indeed must be angry.

At least Queensland can slam its borders (Los Angeles County's airport is designated an essential U.S. business...all kinds of people suddenly have to visit sick relatives here...they keep coming, no quarantine). I think if Gov Newsom tried to quarantine visitors from outside, people would be very displeased, angry - even up in arms, especially in the eager-to-open areas like Orange County.

This is a fight for peoples lives. I don't think I'm normally a "mean" person. Well the word means something different here, it means to be stingy or miserly.
I agree with throwing the book at people who would knowingly put other people's lives in danger.

People are angry and scared for their lives and their families lives, their friends lives. And rightly so.

Apart from that, yes, I think many Australians have become what I call hard hearted, only caring about themselves and their money and their wellbeing.

It's been years and years since I was in Australia. Is this mainly directed towards Covid or have people gotten mean over the years? I certainly include the US in that question. I'm kind of shocked at the hostility coming from both sides here. Jmo

Sky news, enough said, I didn't bother reading any further ;)

Again President Trump blamed in 'latest reason' for outbreak of COVID-19 in America

His foundation is trying to help minority and low-income students during this pandemic.

Surely he's entitled to give his opinion, despite the fact he has no school age children or medical back round.

From the link:
But Gates, whose charitable foundation has pumped into research for a coronavirus vaccine, said a return to school is vital, particularly for students in low-income and minority communities, who have been hard hit by the virus.

“Our foundation has revamped our education work to really jump in and help,” he said. “Make sure that minority students and low-income students aren’t suffering the most throughout all of this.”

I respectfully suggest that we don't need any more "opinions" by people who have zero real world experience in education, epidemiology, virology, or other qualitative medical and educational education and experience.

Although, it is interesting that Mr. Gates agrees with President Trump and Secretary DeVos on this issue. None of whom have either educational or medical backgrounds.

Here is an example of a reasonable, flexible plan...it is not "just open schools". It is 32 pages long. This is the type of thoughtful, defined plan to meet the needs of children.
