A Canadian can have a permanent residence in the US?

Yes. Many spend 6 months in Canada, but don't have winterized homes here, so they can claim that their primary residence is in the US.. While in Canada, they may live in a summer park, or on a boat or cottage. These all close when winter sets in.

There are also many with green cards or duel citizenship.

Just a clarification, we are talking about a home which is their primary residence, and not about permanent resident status.

Yes. We only had it on public transport before. I do find it a little strange that they are doing it now but didnt before. It's almost like it is a punishment for the situation in Caerphilly county where they had all the raves and gatherings. Only have had to wear the mask at hairdresser and doctor's up till now. The previous post and Welsh link stated the rise in Caerphilly was due to people socializing in other people's houses, so I cannot see how wearing masks in shops is going to help this TBH

Here's a Public Health Wales announcement.

https://phw.nhs.wales/news/enhanced-public-health-action-in-rhondda-cynon-taff-and-merthyr-tydfil/

Enhanced public health action is being taken in Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil local authority areas to limit the spread of Coronavirus following an increase in cases.

The enhanced action includes asking people to limit the use of public transport to essential purposes only, such as for education, work, essential medical appointments and food shopping.

Local people are also being advised that they should not visit care homes, unless it is an end-of-life visit. In such cases full PPE will be required.

The enhanced action is the result of a multi-agency Incident Management Team including Public Health Wales, Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board, and Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff local authorities.

Dr Kelechi Nnoaham, Director of Public Health for Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board and Chair of the multi-agency Incident Management Team, said:

“We are grateful to the vast majority of residents in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taff local authority areas for sticking to social distancing guidelines, and for the part they have played in protecting older and vulnerable people from Coronavirus.

“Sadly, there is evidence that some people are ignoring or disregarding these guidelines, which is why transmission has increased, and we are now having to take enhanced public health action to limit the spread.

“Our message for the public is that Coronavirus has not gone away, and it can be a very serious illness - especially for older and vulnerable people.

“We must all play our part to protect our vulnerable or older friends, family members and loved ones. Whilst we may not be seeing hospital admissions at the moment, it will only be a matter of weeks if we don’t act now. This is based on what are observing in Europe and what is scientifically known about how the virus can quickly spread from community transmissions to hospital admissions.”

Other enhanced public health actions being undertaken in these areas will include:

  • Asking people to wear three layer face coverings or masks, where it is safe to do so, whilst in work, in supermarkets and other indoor or crowded public spaces
  • Reinforcement of existing messages around social distancing and the need to follow guidelines
  • Enhanced contact tracing to identify source of infection and understand epidemiology
  • Proactive work with businesses/premises to ensure compliance with social distancing
  • Identified link workers to target getting specific groups to come forward for testing
  • Messaging specifically to schools and children
  • Introduction of mobile testing units
  • Employers encouraging staff to work from home where possible
  • Additional checks on returning travellers
  • Alerts to primary care and hospitals of rising numbers and to advise active testing to identify cases.
The public has a vital role in preventing the spread of Coronavirus by always observing social distancing guidelines – that’s staying two metres away from others - washing hands regularly with soap or by using alcohol based sanitiser, and working from home if they can.

If you or a member of your household develop symptoms of cough, fever or change in sense of taste or smell, you must book a test for Coronavirus promptly to help control the spread of infection.

    • Public Health England data shows that Covid infections in the over-50s has risen by a staggering 92 per cent
    • Infections increased 72 per cent among those in their 60s, and 44 per cent among those in their 80s
    • Yvonne Doyle, medical director at PHE, urged people to socially distance, wash their hands and wear masks
    • SAGE adviser Sir Mark Walport has warned England is on the brink of 'losing control' of the Covid outbreak
    • National statistician Sir Ian Diamond said people need to be 'unbelievably vigilant about social distancing'
Am posting the graph from the young ones link in the quoted post for comparison. In both links and all age groups it has really jumped during the big holiday period, the last two weeks of August.

Tour de France
So the director who tested positive has assured everyone he had no contact with riders - absolute lack of understanding. He obviously had contact with team owners and managers who had contact with riders. And what about others connected to the Tour? Waiting for a disaster...

If two members of the team, including support staff and managers, test positive, then the whole team is expelled. Perhaps the winner will turn out to be the team that managed to keep CoVid out, rather than the team that had the best athletes.

Did you see the report of the family and friends who left Victoria and cruised up the coast to Qld? They roamed around my coastal town on their journey up the coast.
Do you have a link where we could read about it?

Why two? Why not just expel the one testing positive? What am I missing?

Fans now banned from starts and finishes. Ain department had released a statement announcing the banning of spectators on the final two climbs on stage 15 on Sunday: the Col de la Biche and the summit finish at the Col du Grand Colombier.

We just went through an awful fire propelled by high winds here in Southern Oregon on Tuesday. One small part of Ashland about a mile from where I live and a large part of Talent and Phoenix have been devastated. It looks like a war zone. My friends in Talent and Phoenix had to flee for their lives on a moments notice, the fire came through so fast. Eleven homes have been lost among my friends, mostly mobile homes in parks that were leveled. They are staying with friends. Others who evacuated and didn’t lose their homes can’t come back home until it’s safe. Ten of them ended up sheltering in the same home with a generous couple. Of course, I’m thinking social distancing would be impossible and not exactly a high priority in these circumstances. But they have posted pictures in their host’s living room of some of them sitting six feet apart wearing masks. I have such great, conscientious friends! Gotta love ‘em. :)

I'm not sure why they don't ban only the one testing positive, but I suspect that having two members of the team test positive may indicate a bigger potential spread which might not show up for a few days, so the whole team goes home.

I'm glad to hear that the fans are banned from starts and finishes. Yesterday's fans were pretty crammed in, and only wearing masks in a slap-dash fashion.

I hope everyone listens to this September Briefing from WHO. The collective medical and research wisdom is critically important to hear. Everyone of us here on this COVID forum does have more knowledge about the virus than most... around the US, anyway. If people could spread the expert information to squelch the crazy hype/hope/Help!! that swirls around facebook, and other controversial forums.... we could help more people come together--- especially around the crazy and distorted information people are going to hear about vaccines.........

Mass. adds travel restrictions for Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, lifts restrictions for New Mexico
Massachusetts officials have removed three states from its list of low-risk locations as a part of the current travel ban and have added one state to the low-risk roster.
Effective Sept. 12, Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia have been removed from the list of lower-risk states amid the coronavirus pandemic. That means anyone traveling to Massachusetts from those states, or any Massachusetts residents returning home from those states, must quarantine for 14 days or produce a negative coronavirus test taken within 72 hours of arriving in the Bay State. People who do not comply with the governor’s order could face a fine of $500 per day.

New Mexico has been added to the low-risk list. Other states on the low-risk list are Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming.
Travelers from those states are not required to fill out a Massachusetts Travel Form and do not need to quarantine. To be on the low-risk list, states must meet two criteria: average daily coronavirus cases per 100,000 below six and positive test rate below 5%, both measured as a seven-day rolling average.

Bete Fog Nozzle, Kuzmeskus team up on school bus disinfection system
More at link
GILL — Bus company F.M. Kuzmeskus Inc. needed a way to cheaply, quickly and safely disinfect school buses, so Executive Vice President Pam Reipold turned to another longtime Franklin County employer: Bete Fog Nozzle.

“You couldn’t find a sprayer, a fogger, a mister, anywhere to save your life,” she said this week, citing heightened demand because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We ordered one that’s still on back order. I know the Betes. I called and said, ‘You make fog nozzles. That’s what I need.’”

What followed was eight months of research, development and experimentation, resulting in the Bete Fastpass public area spray system for disinfecting school buses. It’s already approved by state transportation authorities in Massachusetts and Vermont, as well as by school districts it serves including Pioneer Valley Regional, Gill-Montague, Franklin Tech and Erving, Reipold said.

And the system is getting attention from other bus companies and school districts in New England and across the country, said Ted Toothaker, a project engineer with Bete, located in Greenfield.

Oh, that is terrible Lilibet. But people still rally to help, no matter what. Such good people everywhere.

Such a hard thing dealing with fires during covid. I am sure our turn will come next. Though we are hoping for a better bushfire season than the last one which devastated so much of my country.

Would that be considered a primary residence? Or more like a second home?
That’s terrible not to be able to get to their residences. Covid

Most snowbirds that I know in Canada are not permanent residents of the U.S., they don't have a green card, but many of them own a condo or home in Florida, but Florida is not their permanent home, their permanent home (legally) is in Canada. My American friends who go to Florida every winter sometimes choose to make Florida their permanent home because of Florida's income tax policies which are more favorable to retirees. But in order to do that, they have to change all their documentation to have Florida as their primary address, including driver's license, etc. So in their case, their homes in Ohio are their second homes.

No, visa waivers are really easy to get. I just apply/renew online and pay the fee. I have the new waiver in less than 24 hours. Probably because we are friendly countries/allies.

Dual citizenship is hard to get. My daughter has it from being born in the US, but I can't get it. I would have to relinquish my Aussie citizenship - which I won't do - and become a fully fledged US citizen only.

The US requires anyone wanting citizenship to relinquish their natural born citizenship, unless they have a birth right to US citizenship and other citizenship.

The U.S. does not require a person to relinquish their natural born citizenship, nor does Canada. This is common among many, but not all, countries. But each country involved with one's dual citizenship only recognizes their citizenship. That is also common among most, but not all, countries.

Canadians are allowed to fly into the US, not drive. Americans are not allowed into Canada (exceptions do exist). I believe that most snowbirds are staying away because 1) they normally drive 2) the don’t want to deal with Florida’s covid situation 3) I believe there may be difficulties in obtaining health insurance coverage that covers covid while travelling.

Air Canada promoting ‘leisure’ travel to U.S. despite advisories warning against non-essential trips

My nephew in Canada passed away this summer (not from COVID), and I would have been allowed to drive into Canada for his funeral from Ohio to Toronto if I would agree to quarantine for 14 days. That wasn't possible, and so the funeral home live streamed the service for those of us who couldn't cross the border. But several family members did drive across the border in order to attend the service, and then they stayed in quarantine for the required number of days thereafter.

At the border, they had to show where they would be staying for quarantine before and after the service, and contact information had to be provided.
